Leto & Lucas
« on: August 29, 2007, 02:17:41 AM »
Wanted to start a thread, given both had their debuts against Toulouse, to see what people's first impressions of the new singings were.  Bits and pieces have been said about them in other threads, but given all the excitement around the sqaud at the moment, wanted to hear the opinions of people who were able to watch them more closely than eye last night.

As for Leto, being better than Gonzales would be a start.  As a starting point we would want someone who is confident & has plenty of skill on the ball, and doesn't easily give the ball away.

As for Lucas, he is the one with the huge potential to star for us, from what I understand.  Hard to tell from a short appearance of the bench (not that you can easily tell with leto, just from one start).

What do you guys reckon?  First impressions?

Leto started very brightly, beat his marker with some good skill and whipped in a dangerous cross. He did fade unfortunately and saw less and less of the ball which seemes to effect his performance. Still alittle early to judge especially after we played that a team that Everton could have beat.

Lucas not enough time to judge and again came on when Toulouse had already started to leave the building.

but for debutants didn't look bad at all, so im hoping for promising times from the pair

Leto showed a lot of promise, very good getting forward and not being afraid at having a go at goal himself, did fade a little towards the end of the second half although a little more match practice will sort that out. Able to tackle and take players on and still get a ball in or a shot on goal- s'what I want to see!!! Overall very promising and looking forward to seeing him in the cup competitions this year.

Lucas - again hard to tell from the short time he spent on the pitch but composed, took players on, had a go at goal and passed the ball around well even when under pressure. Had the energy (albeit due to coming on late) to chase down balls and good awareness.

In summary, I think very useful additions to the first team and to be honest the squad is looking much better, stronger and perhaps more importantly - younger - for their inclusion, just hard to see how he is going to keep everyone happy and focussed. Easy to do at this stage of their tenure, will be harder to do in 12 \ 24 months time, but only because I'm not sure who will go to allow them to get regular football!! Still if we make money on them and it pays for more big names - job done!!

Riise kept on attacking which forced Leto to defend for him. I found that very frustrating.

Lucas hardly did anything but his passing was quite good.

I'm gonna be humble and say that Leto definately needs some more time. He does look promising but he will have to adapt to the premier league style of football. It seemed as if he tired quite quickly after making a few good runs down the left. The good thing is that he's obviously not scared to take a player on. Wether or not he can do that against any of our 19 road blocks is another thing.

Leiva? I like him, I like him a lot. Possesses a very good touch and makes intelligent, well composed plays. Always looking for the simple pass and disguises the more intricate ones very well. Reminds of a player in the Riquelme mold, cause you don't really notice him but he shows signs that his vision is a good 3-4 passess in advanced.

Overall, I have to say that I haven't been a big fan when it comes to an influx of european talent. But the majority of these lads are unproven and are hungry for their chance to put a name up in lights.

His 1-touch passing was sublime leading up to that 1st Kuyt goal. I swear I saw a no look pass in there. :)

Leto looked pretty good for a young man in a new country. I think he started really well, but as the game went on and he saw less of the ball he faded out of the match.

Lucas had some good passes and touches, but not a lot you could really judge him on.

Thought Leto started brightly but as other posters have said faded in the second half but hey he's a young kid in a foreign land playing in a new team and with a left back who seemed reluctant to pass to him so overall i'd say he showed enough to suggest he's not gonna be another Gonzo.

Lucas i thought looked the biz, he looked genuinely excited to be getting on and although only on for 15 minutes or so he was good in possession, got stuck in and generally looked like he'd been at the club for years, may be too soon and i don't wanna put too much pressure on the lad but i'm expecting big things of the young brazilian with the 70's hair.

having come on for momo his role was restricted a little as he wasnt given a full attacking roe , i saw him sometimes just sitting deep ...a brazilian mate of mine says his best qualities are his attacking runs from the mid similar to a junihno permnabucho of lyon so ..im not going to judge him on this game .

leto was good tonight ..he was never poor in his effort ...yet i feel against shanghai he had a better display

After Sami scored Toulouse gave up and we went 3-5-2. With Yossi still hugging the right a bit we didn't see much action down the left hand side which is perhaps why Leto wasn't so involved.

In the first 45 I think Leto did fine, his corners were particularly accurate (hoorah!) and though he sclaffed a few shots he didn't look totally out of place which is all you can ask for in a relatively cheap kid making his debut.

Lucas looked pretty tidy when he came on, lots of good short passing and not afraid to have a shot.

Four of us went up last night and I was the only one who thought Leto looked okay, he started brightly with an excellent stepover and got a good cross in he did fade as the game wore on but all of the players on the pitch were trying to impress Rafa and they cant all have the ball.

I imagine he was a bit frustrated with Riise who kept bombing on, Lucas looked assured but there wasnt time to get a proper look at him.

I would also draw attention to the standard of Toulouse who were lucky to leave Anfield having only been beaten 4-0.

Agreed - I thought Leto looked intimidated by Riise to be honest.  And there was plenty of times where Leto was hugging the touchline, waiting for a pass, and Riise was running on and then passing it in-field, not even looking to play Leto in!!!!!

He did OK IMO, and I still can't believe how big he is!  When Crouch scored Leto ran over and looked normal, and then Yossi turned up and looked like a Midget lol!!!!!

Leto started brightly but faded in the second half, as he saw less of the ball.

Lucus looked very confident and was always looking for the ball, some nice passes as well. Although he was only on for a few minutes, he looks to be a gem.

I think Lucas could be a great at this club and the value of him is gonna rocket as he stays here.

I think Lucas and Mascherano should play against Derby, they would rip them apart.

Liked the look of both of them and they both played well for their first proper games!

Leto looked a bit nervous (which is to be expected) so it was nice to hear Rafa giving him words of encouragement

Lucas for me looked more assured when he came on!

:)  true... i thought i'd stuck my LOTR dvd in by mistake.

thought Leto looked good first half, not so much second, although he seems to take a better corner than most of the rest of the team and that is a positive

Lucas - looked neat and tidy. Was it his pass through defense in the build up that led to Kuyt's first can't remember

I would say that Leto was about a 6, Lucas an 8, although he wasn't on the pitch for that long. Nice sharp, neat passing from Lucas.

Opposition were total muck though, TNS offered more of a challenge... well, maybe.

Leto looks like he will be quite a useful player for us. Seems to have a good touch and a willingness to beat his man yet while still keeping it simple.

It was also nice to see him track back and put in a good tackle against their full back when he lost possession to him, a couple seconds earlier.
He also whipped in a beautiful corner in the 1st half..I think it lead to a Crouch chance that should have broken the deadlock.

Lucas?? Hard to make a judgement yet.

I have to say JAR really wrecked my head last night. I've seen him come in for a lot of criticism on this and other forums and never really agreed with much of it but I'm starting to watch him more carefully and the way he smothered Leto's debut annoyed me no end. He seemed to play ahead of Leto and often went for the occasional 40 yard shot rather than pass to Leto in space. It was like he was making sure Leto wouldn't shine in case he'd get more competiton for his place!(I realise this is a slight exaggeration).

Leto has talent. Can dribble and cross but not quite ready yet. I think in a couple of months he'll look more settled but his performance was quite Gonzalezesque last night. His performance against Feyenoord was the exact same. Good start and then faded. He's a player that needs to keep getting the ball. I watched him play a few times for Lanus and he's a busy player that can do damage but is still a bit raw.

Lucas is class. Great one touch stuff and very aware of other players. I think he made a very positive impact when he came on. For all our great midfielders we don't really have a replacement for Gerrard in the sense that we don't have a player who naturally likes to break forward and attack from the centre. Hopefully Lucas can be that player. He's very tidy (and I'm not referring to his hair).

I agree Henry, Leto looks like some kind of spooky Gonzalez clone, hope he proves me wrong though, Lucas on the other hand looked very classy indeed but I wouldn't like to be at the back of that midfield queue,  :o

Very encouraging. Remember a couple of years ago the qualifiers and our 'second string' included Darren Potter. The poor lad looked terrified and every time he got the ball he looked inside to shovel it to Stevie. Last night both of them looked comfortable on the ball - mind you, that's what a few million is supposed to buy, isn't it?

Think leto will come on alot for his debut last night, very casual at times but he is a young lad who will only improve. Lucas for me looked a class act, never showed a ounce of nerves and looked very comfortable on the ball, ok he never did anything fantastic but played simple balls and was always looking for space. Would not surprise me in the slightest if the lad gets a few starts

There is just something about Leto that looks a bit awkward to me. He did ok though, maybe it was just nerves. And as for the hair that's got to go I'm afraid. Long hair is one thing but he looks like a fucking girl!
