was a good player for us then obviously the money took over and since he left he has done nothing for the club in any capacity.

not a legend

Sadly, McManaman is a fairly typical example of a modern-day ex-professional footballer.

Too many of his ilk are now employed by a lazy media to give opinions, when they really have nothing of any value to say.

Merson, Charlie Nicholas, Stan Collymore...the list is long. What they all have in common is that despite playing the game at a high level, they know less than most posters on here.

If they want a valid opinion from him they should ask him about horseracing.

The fool knew he was going to leave Liverpool for a big pay-day.  Waited for his contract to run down - left for nothing - took all the cash to Madrid.  Liverpool should have gained a substantial amount from a transfer.

The same goes Michael Owen.  Both lost their Liverpool legend status the moment they screwed the club out of cash by claiming to love the club - but then waiting and waiting before leaving for nothing (Owen for £8 million - at the time was nothing!).

Everytime I see McManaman, makes me sick.

50 - 50. Scored some memorable goals, never quite fulfilling his potential with us, IMO.

Didn't the club try to cash in on him but he fucked it up with his wage demands?

When he left it was with his eyes open - $ $. He was the best paid footballer in the world ffs!

As for now, he should clearly shut the fuck up telling the fans to do one.

Gets on my fuckin nerves these days.

He used to piss me off as a player too. Saved his best performances and goals for the televised games and missed more sitters than I care to remember. Oh yeah, he was a shit house too. Other than that he was ok.

Absolutely fuckin spot on.

Macca was a fantastic player for us in a very barren period for us and the club in general.

Not sure about being a legend, but he was an excellent player and would walk into our team in his 1995-96 form, and we still havent replaced him. The fact that Igor fucking Biscan is held in higher esteem than Steve McManaman says a lot about the intelligence of some fans.

Igor Biscan at least TRIED. McMoneyman just screwed the fucking club. You, my friend, are a complete tithead.  :wanker

I think you'll find Macca is a legend in Madrid.
Had he been surrounded by top class players at Anfield he might now be seen in the same light on Merseyside.

He'd still need a personality transplant.

He's a smug, arrogant, twat.

Complete bluenose bitter prick, today's comments were just typical of someone who hasn't taken the time to understand the situation.

Before the Athens final he made some more shocking comments about not supporting Liverpool but supporting his mate Robbie Fowler and hoping he'd score.

A disgrace.

Is it just me or does anybody else get easily annoyed by the man, every time i see him he makes me cringe.

And after some recent outbursts in the media i hate the man even more.

Anyways i just wanted to see the opinion amongst us reds and see if you people share the same opinion as me i.e. "shut up and go away, you waste of time big time charlie wannabe" or do you class him as a legend.

Obviously the way he left this fantastic club of ours wasn't the best, however when he was here i'll be honest and say i never thought much of him them.

Great for a few seasons, went through the motions for two seasons while he ran his contract down (i don't have a serious problem with him leaving but the going through the motions and dip in form for 2 years did my nut in).

Dick of a pundit though, oblivious and uninvolved, as many pundits are these days.

I watched the tape of the match tonight and his comments were either ill informed or he didn't think he should be seen backing 'scallies'. I would think the latter.
Maybe he has forgotten his roots.
Backing the sacked dockers doesn't quite seem as genuine now.

My lad rang me after the game and told me what he had said otherwise I wouldn't have watched it.
I have to say though that the commentator on Setanta came out with the most prolonged  ignorant, negative , fucking biased commentary I have ever heard. What a complete gobshite !

However back on topic. Loved to watch McManaman in full flow when he was on top of his game but never thought his heart was ever truly at the club.
However he didn't see out his contract deliberately. The club offered him one and he agreed it.
He then pestered them to get it drawn up and he would sign it as the press were constantly running the story that he hadn't signed and the fans were getting more than a little frustrated.

The club eventually came back to him and told him they had changed their mind about what had been agreed and they wouldn't now give him what they had initially offered him.
They also spoke to Barcelona without him knowing.

So he fucked off.

One of my favourite players.
Felt betrayed when he left, but hey, thats life.

Fantastic player tho. Just the kind of player we are missing - creative, can dribble past players, can pick a pass and score from anywhere.
Pity about the 'character' or all that, but we dont really know what went on behind the scenes.

What does "legend" mean anyway?

If you ask me, "Would you have him in his prime in our team now? Wouldhe dramatically improve the attacking play of our current  team ?"

Hell, yeah.

Correct me if i'm wrong, but wasn't it the club who tried to sell him behind his back, buy touting him to the big clubs. So once he found out, fuckin off on a free was his way of getting his own back couple years later

Was great to start off with, then couldn't be arsed. Even at Real he looked crap to me. And that goal in the final rolled down his shin.

Pity really.

Can't blame him. If I had that much dosh, having to play a game of football would definitely be an inconvenience.

But not a legend. Not a Cally or a Smithy, Kenny etc.

Will always remember him for that spat with Brucie in the derby at Woodison in the early 90's. Oh and not to forget that chance he missed in the Cup at Stamford Bridge when it was much easier to square the ball to Robbie (or whoever) to make it 3-0 but the selfish git took the shot on himself and fluffed it. We went on to lose the game 4-2 and crashed out!

WOW!  ;)  Seriously though love or loathe him you can't necesserally judge a player soley on what he won in his career. That's a bit like saying Matt LeTissier was dreadful because Southampton never won anything.

Sorry wasn't necesserally saying that you personally were judging him on only wining two trophies with us just that some other people during the thread seem to be implying that it somehow makes him a lesser player.
