Top 5 from the album for me:

No Surrender
Downbound Train
Born In The USA (Usually prefer the acoustic versions of the song- love the LINYC version)
My Hometown
I'm Going Down

I also like Bobby Jean and on occasion a good old listen of Glory Days.

It's on the first album and listen to the Hammersmith version of that song. It's bloody brilliant.

Oh yeah, keep thinking thats the first..

This is one of my favs, check out Nils' solo; such an under-rated guitar player in my opinion, plays with a thumb-pick and his fingers too- blues man.

Goosebumps.
This brings back memories of one of the greatest concerts I've ever seen - the Devil's & Dust gig at the Point Depot in 2005 with a thunder storm raging outside which added to the atmosphere...

decent timing, bruce..

Agreed. After a few listens it's quite good. Not too strong lyrically but a very catchy song. Good start to the album- like Radio Nowhere in my opinion.

Ha ha. Seeb, we obviously have differing perceptions of what constitutes a 'strong' lyric.

Boy Oh boy nobody but nobody does emotional intensity like Bruce. Goosebumps.

My first thought was 'Life of riley' by the lightening seeds. Average tune this new one, sounds like a  song left over from working on a dream.

Haha. I guess I'm referring to the repetitiveness more than anything. Add to the fact that I'm unconciously comparing these lyrics to the old Bruce classics and epics.

Listening to the Ian broudie song it surprised me how fleeting that riff was considering it's stuck with me - and obviously you too - so much. Bruce's song features it much more prominently.

I quite like the song on first hearing Gunna. I think it might be a bit like Brilliant Disguise in that the lyrical intensity will carry the song for me until the melody begins to fit like a glove and the thing becomes a perfect match. Songs usually work the other way round for me. But I think this might be one of those exceptions. Hope so anyway.

Don't think we'll ever see that sort of stream of consciousness linked to driving desperation that characterized his classic period seeb.

Since devils [including Devils] I think he's concentrated more and more on the sparseness of lyric than epic sprawl and I must say it works beautifully for me on this one. I love its understated driving home of the point. The cavalry/bugle analogy could sound crass but he weaves it in seamlessly. I see him registering his disgust, possibly even contempt, for what authority is not doing, has failed to do and the alienated, despairing souls that is continuing to create.

I like it Timbo, but with all his recent stuff bar The Promise i find it over produced. The music is there though. The lyrics are very powerful in this new song in my view. My first view after listening was they were lazy, guess that comes from the repeated chorus? but after studying them i think they are strong.

He actually says 'calvary'... whether that's a slip of the tongue or a tremendous bit of word play I have no idea. Could be a little shot towards the religious right in America...

Great spot Joe.

This sure is one hell of a powerful song from America's outstanding artist. And I know from what I've read this past few years just how fucking enraged Springsteen is by the utter obscenity of all that's taken place.

\n On Tom joad and Devils and Dust - powerful as many of the sentiments were - he essentially limited his involvement to an artistic representation of what he saw as the plight of the mexican underclass.

\nHowever, to me he seems with this song to be taking the next step. Almost a call to arms. Has he crossed America's precious religious line. Is this a slip of the tongue or is it a shot at the WASP right of America as Joe says.

\n The video Gunna posted is a fan's superb take on the song. The fan has captured the mood  and anger of the song brilliantly but even she clearly hasn't noticed the calvary bit as the lyrics on the screen say cavalry.

\n There's folks know better than us what's gone down in the land of the free. Are we going to see the burning of Brucie's CD's as the WASPs come right back at him.

\n Good on yer Brucie lad. you fuckin tell it like it is.

\n :-0)

Really looking forward to Wrecking Ball. Trying to keep my expectations grounded though.

Been listening to Tunnel of Love recently. It's an album that seems to get quite a bit of praise whenever conversations turn to Bruce. Just can't see the attraction myself. Not saying it's his worst or anything, but aside from maybe Brilliant Disguise there's no real stand out track in my opinion. Anyone here explain what it is exactly they like about it?
