Is Lion worth getting?

I would hang back for now, quite a few people I know have complained about irritating bugs. I don't know if you use any old programs but they killed support for stuff that requires Rosetta.

I'm still on Snow Leopard and pretty happy with it.

It is shit, don't get Lion, biggest waste of money (albeit a rather minute sum). Dodge it K_H.

I quite like Lion, the UI is much more fluid. A lot of the improvements require you to use either a trackpad or Magic trackpad to get the most out of it.

My Mac Book Pro (from 2007) keeps freezing. Two different Genius Bars staff and an independent repair shop hasn't been able to solve it for me. The guy at the repair shop advised me to use a cooling pad to prevent the 'overheating' that occurs down the middle - it worked for 3 hours and is freezing at start up again. Shall I just change the hard drive? Anyone else has had the same problem?

Right, I finally got around to download Applejack and go through the steps to repair the disk because I didn't have an OS installation disk on hand. While it went through the process, applejack claimed that it couldn't repair the disk, but later confirmed that all disks had been repaired without any problems.

When I restarted the MBP, it stopped at the grey startup screen for about 10 to 15 minutes, until finally loading properly.

I was then intrigued if the disk had been repaired by checking the S.M.A.R.T. status, but both onyx and disk utilities claimed that the disks had to be repaired. Any thoughts on what is going on?

*It occurred to me that I have a partition in my HD, may that maybe affect things?

I get that same thing on my screen except the rotating grey stuff freezes after a few minutes.

Got a bit of a promblem with my macbook, was wondering if any of you kind folks could offer any advice.

Every time it's put to sleep, when I awaken it- it switches itself off after about 2 seconds. then it takes 4 or 5 attempts to start up.

Its still operating on OSX 10.5.8.

My old iBook G4 did the same as that. You might want to check the condition of your battery. How many cycles has it done?

http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1519

There is a matrix on that link too to see what the levels are for each type of laptop. Hope this helps.

Try holding alt as soon as you turn it on. Then select the right start up disk...

I had this issue once but can't remember how I sorted it! I will keep thinking

Boo to VLC. Movist for the win on Mac. VLC for backup if Movist can't play it.

I use Alfred a lot, too. Couldn't live without it (or similar).

Movist definitely first choice.

Still like Quicksilver over Alfred.

to be honest, I got sick of waiting for QS to appear after I hit the hotkey. There are a few QS features missing from Alfred that I really miss, but overall I prefer the instant responsiveness of it.

That said, QS was probably only slow because I filled it with far too much crap in the first place. Also, it tended (tends?) to break whenever you update to a new major version of the OS, and it was definitely something I could not live without for weeks till the devs fixed it.

QS is deffo still the daddy, though. IMO, one of the greatest pieces of software ever written.

When was the last update published? Not sure what version I'm on but it's pretty shite at the moment. Might do a software update later on.

The 10.7.2 update is recommended for all OS X Lion users and includes general operating system fixes that improve the stability, compatibility, and security of your Mac. It also includes support for iCloud, a breakthrough set of free cloud services that automatically and wirelessly store your content on iCloud and push it to all of your devices. iCloud on OS X Lion includes the following features:
iCloud stores your email, calendars, contacts, Safari bookmarks, and Safari Reading List and automatically pushes them to all your devices.
Back to My Mac provides remote access to your Mac from another Mac anywhere on the Internet.
Find My Mac helps find a missing Mac by locating it on a map and allows you to remotely lock the Mac or wipe all its data.
Getting started with iCloud is easy. After installing the update, OS X will automatically present an iCloud setup panel. Simply enter an existing Apple ID or create a new one and then follow the on screen instructions. To learn more about iCloud visit http://www.apple.com/icloud.

The 10.7.2 update also includes Safari 5.1.1 as well as fixes that:
Allow reordering of desktop spaces and full screen apps in Mission Control.
Enable dragging files between desktop spaces and full screen apps.
Address an issue that causes the menu bar to not appear in full screen apps.
Improve the compatibility of Google contact syncing in Address Book.
Address an issue that causes Keynote to become temporarily unresponsive.
Improve VoiceOver compatibility with Launchpad.
Address an issue that causes a delay in accessing the network after waking from sleep.
Enable booting in to Lion Recovery from a locally attached Time Machine backup drive.
Resolve an issue that causes screen zoom to stop working.
Improve Active Directory integration.

For detailed information about Safari 5.1.1, please visit this website: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4922.
For detailed information on this update, please visit this website: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4767.

she did that but it isnt working.  She even tried to open another word document file but it doesnt recognise it. Does putting application in the bin (in mac) means uninstall?

It doesn't mean uninstall, putting the app back should work. Has it been put back in the same location (I think there's an MS Office sub folder in Applications that has all the applications)?

If she's really stuck and has an internet connection try downloading OpenOffice, as a temporary solution.

Ive told her now to install Open office as you said.  I think she fucked up Word, when she didnt find it on her "bar" she took the one from application folder to put there and then she found the icon from the bar on her desktop which she deleted, etc.  Ive told her to bring the laptop when she comes round and I'll have a better idea what can be done.

Thanks a lot tinner and Ginamos!

GBF, for future reference, when you take anything off the bar it'll disappear in a puff of smoke. Anything on the desktop is the actual app/folder/doc. An alias (a shortcut) will be the icon with a little arrow on the right hand bottom corner.

Hello. My local Apple store is doing a sale on Pro's - it's £1099 for the 13" 2.8 Ghz - reasonable, or are they releasing a new Pro soon - hence the price?

You can get them cheaper online, I got mine for £999 from Very.

Just had a look at Very. You sure yours isn't the 2.3ghz one mate? That's listed at £999 there. I'm looking at the 2.8ghz Pro.

Ah sorry, didn't read that bit, only read the 13" part.

Bought a new 13" MacBook Air in the end to use as my personal laptop, as my work one is massive, and the Pro's are pretty heavy units.

It would have made travelling with both a bit of a nightmare.

Very pleased with it so far. Can't get over how thin it is.

Processing seems good, although I've sacrificed a lot compared to the Pro. PS5 seems to work fine on it, which is the product I use most.

Can the Mac'ers maybe list me a few essential programs I should think about getting - Don't mind whether they cost money or not.

Loads plastered through this thread mate, some quite recent too, last couple of pages.

Here's a start for you though.

I do read the thread, but not really being able to assess what is what yet, I wanted to make sure. What you posted is perfect - cheers

hi, tried to back up my hard drive today. Normally id get the message that files have the same name in this location, skip, copy or replace etc..Today it trys to add new files appending them with copy?
I normally select all in one hard drive and then paste in the other drive. Is there a way around this?
