Pep Guardiola: Class
« on: July 26, 2007, 06:41:55 PM »
Following on from the striking legends thread, here's a video I found of Josep Guardiola. The amount of killer balls in this video is stunning. Shit quality, but you'll get the idea.

He was pure class, so much elegance.

I was desperate for us to sign him when his contract ran up at Barca.

MBE is untouchable IMO. Plus he's the best midfielder in the world and he was in Sky's team of the season.

Not a fact.

But Gerrard is a completely different kind of central midfielder to Guardiola, he doesn't possess the same intelligence and patience.  He liked to control things from deeper, whereas Gerrard is more of an attacking midfielder.

No he was not better, but he was up there with him, but injuries ruined it for Redondo to be seen in the same class.

I watched Guardiola in Sonny Andersons testimonial and he was pure class still.

Guardiola edges it for me, but if Redondo hadn't of had as many injuries as he did, he might of gone on to of been better.

He was still a class act though.

Guardiola Dedicates Champions League Victory To Milan Captain Maldini

Pep is certainly pleased to have won Europe's top club prize and has made an unexpected dedication to Calcio...

Barcelona defeated Manchester United 2-0 in the Champions League final in Rome on Wednesday. After the match, Blaugrana boss Pep Guardiola spoke about his delight at winning the trophy.

One of the first things he mentioned was the host city and a specific issue affecting Italian football at the moment; the retirement of defender Paolo Maldini.

"I dedicate this to Italian football and Paolo Maldini, who need not worry because he has the admiration of all of Europe," the victorious boss told RAI Sport.

The Milan captain was insulted by some Rossoneri fans during his final match at San Siro this past weekend, something that reportedly angered the former Italian international, who is on the verge of ending his 24 year career.

Guardiola knows Maldini from his playing days in Italy, where he had stints with both Brescia and Roma in the early part of the decade.

"I'm experiencing a great joy, it's been a pleasure to win it in Roma, a hug to all Italians," he said in conclusion.

pep is more of a xabi, molby and iniesta mold- the time keepers/metronome of the team- keeps it calm when needed, attacks when required.

redondo as much as i like the guy is more of our lil luis- that spark of genius that opens up defences. :)

I seem to remember we were once linked with Guardiola when he was getting on a bit at Barca?

He was the best of his generation and proving to be a rather handy manager if this season is anything to go by....!

Not saying he's a shite manager but with a team like Barca hasnt he had a free ride? The team picks itself and the results will always keep coming with an attacking line like they have. Of course there is much more to management then just picking a team and letting them get on with it but i'd hardly call him a brilliant manager when half of it is already there for him.

tbf mate the previous manager had the same players and more, and he still won fuck all last season. So you have to give credit to Guardiola for winning the league and the Champions League in his first year.

This has to be a wind up.

He's clearly loved by the club, the fans and the players and for that there must be a reason.

Having said that, he ought to retire now!!! I mean can it ever be better? If we can't win it next year then I'd be more than happy if they retain it. That would surely make you change your mind about him.

United were supremely confident last night, in fact I personally think it was their downfall. The body language on both sets of players gave me a good feeling before the match. You could see that United thought they had already won in contrast to the Barca players who looked a bit nervous but also serious and focussed. They clearly respected their opponents far more than United did. Guardiola said he knew how to beat United and he was right and presumably much of Barca's mentality last night came from him. Well played I say because they could have been turned over if they had gone there with United's attitude.

Come on mate, it's clear to see the changes he's put in.

Under Rijkaard the big players would miss training, fuck about, not give him respect, and it was more about them than the club towards the end.

Guardiola came in and immediately commanded respect, players are fined thousands of euros for every minute of training they are late for, big egos such as Ronaldinho and Deco were immediately shipped out, the whole team has become a better unit.

Even the goal celebrations have changed, there's no more individuals running off to the cameras, the players congratulate each other as a team then move right back to the centre spot and start knocking it about again.

He's implemented a huge winning mentality comparable to Benitez at Anfield, just look at the Madrid game a couple of weeks ago, the game was already over yet their pride, instilled by Guardiola, kept them fighting on towards achieving a ridiculous result.

Guardiola is everything Barca needed this season and last night, coupled with the League and Cup, is just award for a talented and classy young manager meeting a brilliant team of footballers.

They'll stroll the league again. It'll be all about how he fares in the CL next season which in my mind is a lottery between barca, ourselves, mancs and chelsea.

Those who say Barca were a winning team and are trying to dismiss what Pep has done, i say this to you:

They hadn't won the league since the 2005/06 season (2 seasons without a league title).
They hadn't won the Copa Del Rey since the 1997/98 season.
They hadn't won the Champions League since the 2005/06 season.

They hadn't won any major trophy for two seasons and then he comes in and wins all three of them trophies.

That's bollocks. They had pretty much the exact same team last season. Forget the treble they were shite finishing so far off the pace. Guardiola's improved their game no end- he's put the hunger into them and the biggest change has been the way they play without the ball. They run around, close down... everything. You'd think you were watching Stoke City. Until the get the ball.
