Flight of the Conchords
« on: July 14, 2007, 06:17:15 PM »
If you have never seen these guys then PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE (!!!!) watch this video. It is one of the funniest songs you will ever hear. They are called Flight of the Conchords. They are a Kiwi folk comedy double act. Kiwi folk comedy has to be worth a look in itself. They featured in a short lived Phones 4 U ad a few years ago where they were seen driving around in a VW camper playing guitars and singing about Phones 4 U. They have their own series on HBO in the US. Seriously you have to see this. It is very funny.

A friend just turned me on to the show.  I don't have HBO so she records them for me.  Great stuff.

As I said in the youtube thread, they are very funny. Also, my wife is convinced they have a tune in the charts, or at least getting airplay, something about the 80's?

They've been around for a while, I think that tune about the 80s was used in the tv ads

One of them was in LOTR as an elf, mind not much of a stretch most of the population was probably in them :p they have garnered quite a following among the loony fringe who are obsessed with lord of the rings.

Their CD (which I forget the name of now, maybe just Flight of the Conchords) is also brilliant.  Haven't seen them live yet, back heard they are the Bee's Knee's

Absolutely love this show - comes on right after Entourage and once the NFL is back it will make up the perfect Sunday viewing ;)

Well, except isn't it over for the season?  Sunday nights are going to be pretty bleak on HBO come September - what the hell is still on?   Think The Wire is due back soon (thank god - best show on there) as well as Curb Your Enthusiasm but that's about it!

Couldn't stay up last night so will watch it off the DVR this evening - great show; as much as I love the boys, Murray the agent I think is the best character on there! Actually, their oh so disturbing groupie with the overbite (can't remember her name) is pretty funny as well.

By the way, how is the New York Supporter Club this season?

Sorry, CLA!   :'(   FOTC and Big Love ended last night for the season; am assuming Entourage did too (as they all tend to be on the same schedule) but can't say for sure...

NY club going well - we actually had about 80-90 people turn out Saturday morning, which was a bit of a surprise...lot of newbies this year.  Hope things are going well up at Scally's - I really hope to get up there sometime early next year.  Though preferably minus the 5 feet of snow I got the last time during my last visit to Toronto!

Happy to hear that you are getting good turnouts - Scally's has been quite outstanding this year. More Reds for games like Sunderland and so on... We'd love to have you back anytime.

And to get back to the thread:
Just found out that this is getting picked up by HBO for another season as well as Entourage.

Ok - I was mistaken - one more episode to go this season....thought for certain they'd billed last week's as the finale.

And what a good one this one was - have to say their Indian dude friend is hilarious as well.  Still love Murray though.  Business plans:

Bret:  "Maybe we could give away pencils?"

Murray:  "We're not in New Zealand anymore!"

These guys kick ass! I have their t-shirt. They rule. If thats what you're into from the fourth ep is hilarious beyond belief. I just love jemaine there with the crazy wee guitar and his really deep voice "is that the kind of thing that you think you might be into?" Best thing on tv right now, comedy wise.

I've only seen the first three, so I may be suffering from premature adjudication, but this show is one of the funniest things I've seen for ages. The musical parodies are just spot on.
I'll always keep in my heart the good times I've had here, the strong and loyal support of the fans in the tough times and the love from Liverpool.

Let’s get out of here
Let’s get in a cab
I’ll buy you a kebab

I can’t believe
That I’m sharing a kebab
With the most beautiful girl
I have ever seen with a kebab

Ooooh

Why don’t we leave?
We can go to my house
And we can feel each other up on the couch
Oh no, I don’t mind taking it slow

No-o-o-o

‘Cause you’re so beautiful
Like a tree
Or a high-class prostitute

You’re so beautiful
You could be a part-time model
But you’d probably still have to keep your normal job
I'll always keep in my heart the good times I've had here, the strong and loyal support of the fans in the tough times and the love from Liverpool.
I have no words to thank you enough for all these years and I am very proud to say that I was your manager.

They showed the HBO special on BBC the week before the series started but thats all they've shown. Although to be fair that is possibly the best live show they've done.

Bret: There was a bit in that song where we were dealing with the issue of AIDS....the bit with the monkeys.
Jemaine: Yeah because it was believed that AIDS was contracted from the monkeys. Not the band but the animal. And we just wanted to deal with that issue - just a couple of points. Just changing the attitude towards AIDS from being "Eww AIDSy" to more like "Oh! Fun monkey disease!"

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Murray: Be careful with it. Don't stand next to any big magnets.
Jemaine: Why would I stand next to a big magnet?
Murray: I don't know what you do in your personal life.

Got the box set of this for present day. Very fucking funny. Dave, Murray are great characters, the dialogue is great, some insanely funny gags and the musical parodies are (mostly) brilliant. My favourite bit? Albie the Racist Dragon. Nuff said.

Never want to see them live though. The TV show at least stops them being the Kiwi Baron Knights.
