The dead-end road to Athens - by Dave Kirby
« on: May 20, 2007, 08:52:14 pm »
Dave has asked me to post this for him:

Regarding the piece I did for radio city 'The Road to Athens' (see link below). I thought you might like to know how the thing it evolved cos the response to it has been amazing.

http://www.redandwhitekop.com/forum/index.php?topic=174958.0

Radio city wanted me to write a preview and review of the two Chelsea semis in verse so before the first match they sent me the Al Pacino monologue from the film 'Any Given Sunday' and said they'd like me to do something around it. We agreed that the monologue would work well better before the second match......though at that time we didn't know we'd be trailing one-nil. My only request was for them to keep the guitar backdrop music from the monologue whenever I spoke....cos basically it would've been rude to interrupt such a brilliant fuckin piece by Pacino. So the whole piece was fated really....cos being one down made it more powerful and relevant...like a war cry. I wrote it on the Saturday and we recorded it on the sunday. The sound techo's then did their stuff on the Monday then the disc was cut and passed on to Jamie and Stevie G who played it to the rest of the team before the game. When I heard the finished disc I just knew we'd win. It was boss fun to do if not only for fact that on my CV I can say I've worked with Pacino!!!

Just for the record....Radio City asked me last week will I do something for Athens. I refused on the grounds that I couldn't put any passion or energy into something that's just kicked me in the fuckin' teeth (I was unsuccessful in the clandestine cherry-picking ballot and still haven't been belled). I told City that my price was a match ticket but they couldn't help...though they were quick enough running a competition for two final tickets, which has really pissed me off. I fully intend to pass copies of the disc to Hicks and Gillette  plus a DVD of a documentary I recently did for the official .tv site about Rome 77. I want to highlight to them the kind of passionate fans that this poxy flawed ticket scandal has shit on. I'm not saying I'm some sort of special case......absolutely no way. I'm just letting the yanks know that the voice they hear on the disc and see in the film represents the kind of loyal supporters who've been deserted and betrayed.

I travel on Tuesday .... ticketless.

I'm travelling ticketless too. As John Lennon said - we're not the only ones.

BTW - Is Rushian Dave Kirkby?

Dave, if you get a chance to read this, that Radio City piece was fucking magic. I've got it saved on the computer - truly inspirational. Passion bleeds from it, I'll be playing before the final on Wednesday.

Wish you, and all the other travelling fans who have been shafted by this farce of an allocation, all the best in getting a ticket for the game. Whatever happens will happen, but you sir have played your part in a big way.

Damn! All this time I was hoping he was Ian Rush on RAWK! I used to listen to everything he said intently

What's that got to do with whether he's Dave Kirby or not?

I think he is Dave Kirby (I'm assuming that why he signed the post with that name) but i had hoped that one of the Liverpool greats was here on RAWK offering his views and advice to us RAWKITES, which is why I always listened initently to what Rusian had to say;  I hope that clears up my meaning :D

Hat's off Dave.

The 77 documentary  is a right at the heart of who we are and why we are. I was feeling fucked off with the lot of it till i watched that .

Total class Dave if you're reading - brilliant timing & pace as ever. You must be so proud of having your performance play a  role in the build-up & of the wonderful reaction.

Wish I could have listened to it on the way to the semi. I've been waiting to hear it though & finally sorted me computer out so I could. My ex-Mrs will have that on a loop when she hears it, but I won't go into that here ...

Fingers crossed for you getting a ticket Dave after this bloody scandalous treatment of STH's. I'm feeling v. guilty about being a lucky '7'  :-\

Hope to bump into you in Athens mate.

It's the best video on youtube that one, makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up when I watch it, absolutely brilliant. Been sending the link to as many fans as I can because every Liverpool fan needs to see it and appreciate it.

I believe this one is the best version though..
