A luxury midfield player.
« on: May 11, 2007, 12:06:17 PM »
In my opinion this is what could make the difference to our team next season. When was the last time we had a player in the Litmanen/Beardsley mould?

He was only on the pitch for 20 minutes last night before coming off (predictably Spurs fans would say) injured last night but Malbranque offered some delightful turns and runs that I have to say are missing in our present set up. I’m not saying Malbranque should again be a target for us but I do hope Rafa is looking for this type of player to add to his squad.

Football matches are all too often like a game of chess and although we are good at this type of game it does need every now and then for a player to just throw the script away and do spontaneous things. That then allows space for others to do damage.

Any suggestions on who we could sign that is capable of such things?
The people of Liverpool are workers. This is not a rich town where everyone lives a comfortable life. They work hard for themselves, and this is what we at Liverpool like to do. This is the attitude we must all have.

Malbranque, please god no, most Spurs fans don't like him, he drifts in and out of games to much for my liking.
Would be more of a passenger than a luxury.

Luis Garcia, Harry Kewell and Steven Gerrard have all being absent from Rafa's preferred roles for them for the vast majority of the season.

Using Rafa's 2005-06 system as the basis for what he presumably would have done with a fully fit squad this season, we have Mascherano, Sissoko and Xabi being rotated between two central midfield slots, and Gerrard, Kewell and Luis Garcia playing in the two wide-based free role slots going forward.

Kewell has been out all year, Garcia half the year, and Gerrard has spent much of the season covering for other players' absences in the centre of midfield - though some may argue that is his best position, I feel he is at his most dangerous attacking in a free role.  Granted, against major opposition, we might want him in the centre of the park, but against 95% of teams, i'd have him on the 'right' hand side, attacking all across the final third.

Perhaps we do need an extra, fourth player to cover this role - of the three we have, there have been occasions when none have been available, but much like the fourth option in the middle (Zenden), we need someone who is willing to bide their time and accept that they are cover.

Unless one of the three (SG, HK, LG) leaves in the summer, I can't see us signing an Aimar or a Tevez, but i'd be interested to see if we can pick up someone who is aging, or a promising, if not quite ready to play week-in-week-out youngster.

NEWS STORY
REDS TO SIGN BRAZILIAN MIDFIELDER
Paul Eaton 11 May 2007
Liverpool are set to sign Brazilian midfielder Lucas Leiva from Gremio, manager Rafael Benitez has confirmed.
The 20-year old midfielder will join the Reds at the start of next season after Benitez beat a host of European clubs for his signature.

"The deal with the player and his club is almost done and I am really pleased he is coming to us," said Benitez.

"He is the captain of the Brazil under-20 side and won the Golden Boot in his country last year so we know he has quality and we also believe he has the mentality and the character you need to do well in England.

"He can play as a holding midfielder but he can also get from box to box and so I am looking forward to seeing him score goals for Liverpool in the future.

"A lot of clubs in England and Spain were asking about him but our scouting department has again been working really hard and it's good that he's coming to us.

"He will arrive in the summer and then will start adapting to football in this country. We know it can take time but I think he has the quality to be putting pressure on Gerrard, Mascherano, Xabi and Sissoko next season."
At a football club, there’s a holy trinity, the players, the manager and the supporters. Directors don’t come into it. They are only there to sign the cheques - Bill Shankly

Luis, yes and just look at how much we miss him now(Chelsea).

The gaffa seem to think this kid is outstanding and judging by the talent he brought in so far, I'm optimistic. The fact that Rafa says he's counting on him to "score goals for Liverpool" says it all- an attacker- yes!! If you look at the stats- our strikers(combined) have scored roundabout the same amount of goals as the Chelsea' and ManUre's strike-squad. The big difference between the 3 of us is that ManUre's midfield has scored considerably more than our's and the Blue Kak. That's the reason for their high goal tally.

Meanwhile, I don't think Xabi(not yet) or Momo's leaving, so I can only assume Leiva's going to fulfill Zenden's role.

Now roll on the rest of the attack-squad.

Why would we take the biggest potential since Kaka (according to the Brazilians) who has been the player of the year in his country and put him on left wing? Not like we play Gerrard on the right and he drifts. Zenden stays on the left then beats no one for pace before losing the ball or passes it backwards.

I can't see it myself.

Probably didn't figure on his injuries. He also said Liverpool would play Milan in the Final of the CL, he said that in February before we had played Barca. Oh and he said we would win ......

Care to name said goal-machine?! Yeah all we need is the most natural scorer of their generation and we'll be flying. This strikeforce would also be cheap as chips.  ;)

I dont think Garcia is good enough, for us to rely on him to do that for us. Hes a good backup and squad player.

Its plain to see we're missing this type of player. Players that come to mind are Riquelme, Aimar (he was THAT guy in Rafa's old team), Tevez, Nani, Quaresma, blah, blah, blah. Even someone like Torres i suppose. If we can get any one of them....  ill be happy.

Im a bit confused by your post though because you mention about having an Litmanen/Beardsley type of player (players who were in the hole) and then you brought up Malbranque later on (who isnt that. hes a winger).

Anyway, those are the type of players we're missing. Wingers or players behind the striker, who can do something different during a game.

Our physical, mental and tactical side of the game is A+. We just need to add some damn skill to our team. Hopefully Rafa does that this summer.

I know. He was some player at Leeds huh. He was one of the best wingers in the world during 1998-2002.

If we had that player in our team now, our attack would be so much different.

Harry Kewell or Gasrcia can do the job for us, or if you want to sign a new player, Tevez could do that job superbly. Imagine Him and Gerrard, both in free roles behind the front 2, switching and running at defence, one at pace with a power shot, the other with skills to unlock any defence, as mentioned before, what we need is the Fowler / Rush of old. Now I thought I saw a time machine in Ebay, anyone chipping in?
