3 weeks ago there was numerous hotels in athens an surrounding very cheap to, so if theyve sold out its very recent.

And if you are flying into Athens airport, best bet is to get the Piraeus bus from the airport. Takes approx 1 hr, or the metro and change in Athens.

Youngie, if you can get somewhere in Athens then it'll be more convenient, but Piraeus is just down the road, and i doubt you'll be going home in the early hours of the morning so no need to get a taxi etc...

Marc, i'd assume you want to be in Athens for the festivities / drinking. If you want a quieter start then i can't see stopping in Piraeus being a bad call, however i only know a couple of bars at the actual port. I'm sure one of the Olympiakos fans can guide better in regards to any good bars down there.

I don't recommend trying to find anywhere to stay in Athens - its really expensive at the best of times never mind when they're hosting a champions league final.  Surrounding cities like Piraeus are ideal and very accessible to the stadium.  Its a straight run to the stadium from Piraeus train station and takes about 30-40 mins depending on what train you end up on ie the newer ones or the rickety old ones (which are being phased out).  Anyone need any help give us a shout.  My family live out in Athens so am a regular visitor so know the area pretty well.  Even if I didn't know the answer to your question I can always find out.   :wave

Atehns has always been very cheap hotel wise for me when i've stayed there. Always stay just off Omonia Sq as it's on the metro from Piraeus.

Guys, Piraeus and Athens are two cities basically MERGED together over the centuries. Piraeus center is only half an hour drive (with traffic taken in concideration) from Omonoia the heart of Athens.

As for Bars and other interesting stuff?! Piraeus is the third biggest harbour after Rotterdam and Hamburg. A lot of sailors are getting their "pleasures" in Piraeus ....not only in the drinking department ....if you know what I mean.   ;)

Do you see in the right side of the picture the sea forming a "balloon"? That is MARINA ZEA (yachting harbour) with countless bars.

That's why we went took a flight back out early Thursday morning. Couldn't be arsed hanging around until Thursday evening for the ferry. Reckon I'll be back in bed in Rhodes by 8am. Assuming all those charter flights from the airport don't interfer with us locals  ;)

Been to Zea marina at 6am before. Once. It was dark and cold and we couldn't get on the Dolphin. Ended up going back to Piraeus and the slow ferry.

Kos is among Rhodes Myconos Ios and Santorini one of the favourite tourist spots. It lies in the eastern part of the Aegean so it takes a while to get there by boat. I think 9-11 hours with low speed ferries. Calculate half that time if you use high speed boats but double the price. I spent my Summer there five years ago and had a great time. Lots of Swedish girls, nice nightlife and nice beaches.

Is there anything around the stadium?
As said before, you won't find anything "usefull" to do in that area. Meybe uefa will organize something, don't know yet. Its the Olympic Complex so basically its a huge area of stadia, swimmingpools, tennis courts and so on. Plus the district is mostly a business district. But you can use public transportation to visit other areas ten minutes away.

I'm really getting worried now. Sent out numerous booking requests and payment details, all coming back "fully booked".

Do we really think the hoteliers are holding back OR have the Chelsea and mancs not cancelled their arrogant pre-bookings OR is Athens and surrounds genuinely full?

Arriving in Athens 01:00 on 22nd and leave 04:00 26th. Thats a lot of park bench sleeping. OMG this is getting really worrying.
At Ataturk one persistant soul
Sang “walk alone” behind the goal

Soon all around the twelfth man sang
Around that dismal place it rang

We did our bit that fateful night
My brothers brown or black or white

I raise my glass through wind and rain
It’s cheers until we meet again

They are playing "hide and seek". It's common practice. They will eventually give in. Athens is full of hotels all of them beeing booked is a farce. Here are two government official sites which you can take them for serious.

Greek National Tourist Organization
http://www.gnto.gr/

The Hellenic Chamber of Hotels (search for "Central Greece")

Indeed. Like this "OSFP" fellow-countryman of mine said, there are PLENTY of hotels in Athens. This is JUST (!) a football game. Remember the Olympic Games. THUSANDS of people around the whole globe came...
So, you better search in Google for hotels in Athens. There are hotels' sites in ENGLISH, with aplication's forms to fill.
Just a bit of search, that's all.

If anyone still needs a room, I found a cracker (be quick though)

I googled and went straight to page 9 to avoid all 3rd parties. Rang the hotel direct, the guy was sound, spoke good english, and is a Red.

It's a 2 star right in Athens centre. Exarchion Hotel

The best thing is the rate. 90 euro a night for a family room with 3 beds in! We got 22nd and 23rd.

Phone number and other options are here.

Good luck

http://www.greekingreece.gr/accommodation/athens&samos.htm#Athens

EDIT: Exarchion is now full.

There is a list though of over 100 hotels and phone numbers in central athens if you follow the link.

was well sorted before we went to Istanbul but do recall seeing a fair few spares knocking about - looking to pick up a couple in Athens, if not we'll still have a ball  ;D
