I think Chelsea have us right where they want us. We have to score 2 past them, and we rarely look like scoring once. I think our chances are very, very slim

My thoughts exactly, although I fear this thread will be hijacked by kneejerkers.

Considering the fact that we never played anywhere near our potential and only conceded one
with the second half at a packed Anfield, gives me hope.

Would've taken it halftime, deserved bit more in the second but slightl berift of ideas in the last third of the pitch. gonna be very very difficult.

Oh and zenden was far from the worst of our players.

Rafa can't be too disapointed with the outcome, given the lineup.

If you play 84 mins with a midfield who really has only 1 offensively capable player, you really can't have very high expectations to score in an away ground.

I think we really missed Aurelio and Finnan today. I wish Gonzales would've been given a go against Ferriera, I think he would've had more success. Can't fault Zenden for his effort though - happy with him.

I will take 1-0, we can do it back in Anfield. Considering that we never really threatened, I think this is a fair result.
We're bit poor on the right without Finnan.

Just wonder if Pennant comes on earlier, would be good to see his partnership with Arbeloa, they have some decent games recently.

But the way we played - the chance they could/should have converted - I'll take it.

Anfield will be rocking next week - hopefully we'll sing the boys home.

0-1 it is then. Lack of top quality attack once again exposed but we're still in the tie and I think that was always going to be the best result tonight. Given the way we played it's not a terrible result.

Gonna be tough next week but we can do it. Early goal and we'll be rocking.

We never win at chelsea, if we'd managed a goal it would have been better but we didn't. Live with it and look forward to the next game, onwards & upwards.

That was a bad showing from us. At least it's only 1-0. Gerrard kept cutting inside for some reason. To me Drogba was the difference in this match. Chealsea was playing like Bolton where they just kept hitting long balls to Drogba thus bypassing our midfield.

People can badmouth Chelsea all they want, but they had a gameplan tonight and played it perfectly. They were unlucky to not score more against us.

It is gonna be tough to score 2 against that defence, I will tell you that. One thing it will take it pace, oh and width too, two things we lacked tonight. Bolo was decent, but he aint a winger, ditto Stevie.

The way to beat Chelsea is with width, why did we have no width ? Gerrard offers no width.
Picked wrong team, shoulda gone with one of Crouch/Kuyt upfront and Gerrard playing behind with Pennant on the wing

Why start Bellamy? Terry and Carvalho just sit there and leave no space behind them so no point in starting Bellamy.

This is what happened with our team tonight – Mascherano and Alonso pick it up in the middle just inside the Chelsea half and play the ball straight in front of them to Crouch/Kuyt who are not exactly going to turn and beat their centre backs 20 yards out and we are going nowhere and end up losing the ball.

We needed width to spray it wide and mix it up and launch balls into the 6 yard box and put Cech under pressure but we don’t play with width apart from Zenden who is not going to cause problems.

Agger bottled it big style and got pushed around a la Senderos for Arsenal

Does he start Hypia next week ? because if they score next week cant see us getting 3!

Fairly confident after that though. Drogba gives us problems, but not much else. We've beat them in every game outside Stamford Bridge since 2005. Let's do it again.

Happy that we are only 1-0 down and can take it up a notch at Anfield, but I have to say that I'm gutted by the performance.

Chelsea were there for the taking in the second half and too many players had bad games. Alonso was shocking and I lost count of the amount of times he dithered on the ball or gave it away. The whole defence was piss-poor also.

Like I said, happy with the result, but we could have given ourselves a better chance.
