Your Top Five Arcade Games of ALL TIME!
« on: March 14, 2007, 03:08:40 PM »
If you could pick 5 arcade games of all time that you loved - what would they be.

The only rules are; You must have played it in an Arcade;

I'd plump for;

1. Outrun
2. Galaga
3. Pheonix
4. Discs of Tron
5. Nemesis
Football has reached the ninth gate of farce and pathetic, unbelievable trite nonsense. It's supposed to be a game and it's turned into pantomime, hype, quilts and bellends.

The only ones i remember playing in an arcade are:

Daytona USA, 8 of us on one of these at Drayton Manor:

Virtua Cop 2
Sega Rally
Mortal Kombat 2
Street Fighter 2
and that Turtles one where 4 people can play at once.
I love Food and Stuff. It's where I buy all of my food. And most of my stuff.

I've never really played that much Arcade games, but Ridge Racer and Street Fighter (on a really old machine!) are my favourites.

THe old Alien vs Predator one was class, where you kid be 1 of 2 humans, or 1 of 2 predators.
From custard slices to menstrual waste in 4 posts. That's impressive, even for RAWK.

Mrs VdM had an educational conference in London a few years back and being the loafer that I am I decided to go with her and have a few days down there taking the air (vaguely smelt of rats piss as I recall).

Anyway I occupied myself for a whole morning at the Game On exhibition at the Barbican. The complete history of arcade and video games - and the best bit, you could play all the exhibits, for free.  Happy days.

Phoenix (we had an afternoon of free games on a buggered machine once, until the bloke realised we hadn't put any money in for hours)
Defender
Gauntlet
Track and Field (the proper one with a joystick, not the crap one with buttons)
Mr Do!

I haven't played a game in an arcade for years, but the worst one has to be Dragon's Lair- 50p a shot and you'd usually die within seconds.

I dont think it would work as well now as there is no huge gap in graphics and wow factor as it was in the mid to late eighties. An Xbox 360 and PS3 now are not going to show the difference compared to a Spectrum and C64 computer did then.

Can't quite decide on the order but my top 5:

Final Fight (hence my username)
Sega Rally
Outrun
Golden Axe
Euro League (wasn't great, but played it a lot at school)

There's one other game I don't know the name of that I spent 2 summer holidays playing. Sort of like pacman but you get chased by these octupus things. By dropping fish, the baddies grow until they get get stuck between the walls and you can catch them. Anyway, if i could remember what it was, it'd make my list.

I declare DEFENDER to be the unanimous winner amongst the knowledgeable, truly discerning oldies of RAWK. ;)

Anyone who says otherwise is only jealous because it was too hard for them to play. :wanker

I used to play defender in the Old Swan 'ice cream parlour' and in town.  It was a privilege to watch legends such as 'EGO' and 'CARLOS' play.  Superb. :wave

3. Street Fighter II
4. Kung Fu Master

Currently my PC running emulators for Amiga (30 games and counting), Spectrum (20  games and counting), C64 (15ish games), and have just downloaded emu's for SNES and MegaDrive.

Got the bug again after reading magazine called retroGamer...next issue due out 29th March.

Yeah, played it a fair bit at uni. An enjoyable game, it had lots of cool touches like ott weapons like antitank guns, mops and the lighter/aerosol combo, and decent range of moves and some laughable cut scenes. The only downer was the graphics were so blocky, the characters looked like lego men :(
I downloaded a torrent of the PS2 conversion (part of the Sega Ages collection) - still good fun though.

5. Combat School (like Track and Field but training for Army).

Was just discussing the Spectrum version of this on another forum - did you ever make it past the penultimate level where you have to fight the instructor? That was bloody tough.

I think it would work.  I mean prices for old consoles such as Mega Drive and Snes are higher than second hand PS ones now and i think that shows lots of people are interested in 'retro' gaming.  And as good as games are now, this thread shows that we all look back fondly at the first games we played as kids.

I'd love to play some of these games again.
