I thought he had some good spells,
like walking off the pitch at half time
and then at the end too.

Hope he's still walking.
It's true to say that if Shankly had told us to invade Poland we'd be queuing up 10 deep all the way from Anfield to the Pier Head.

How he couldnt see the blatent diving by Barca I dont know.  When he booked Agger for a nothing tackle that wasnt even a free kick because he got pressurised by the Barca team I felt sick.  Disgrace that man and worse,

Vassaras is a very good ref, the best in Greece.

Help us my greek friend  ;D

ban him ;)

English refs not much better.  Mike Rilly managed to set a Champions League record tonight with 11 bookings in one match, a match according to Sky, which hardly featured a tackle!

Which means bugger all, as you can caution for a range of things including dissent, diving and then he has to do his mandatory cautions like tackles from behind, etc. There may not have been many tackles in the game, but that doesn't mean there should be no cautions

too right.. a petition is needed for Antonis.

My god almighty he was shit that ref. He took a year off my life tonight. The funny thing was was seeing Momo going down very easily in the 2nd half and winning a free kick - as if Rafa had said - the ref's a penis.. go down, or momo had decided.. fuck it.. if this is how the game is going to be played.. then 'play on' (Bill Shakey).

I thought he was fucking shocking to be honest.

Every time a player went down he gave a free kick... and after a while everyone realised.  It took about half an hour for our lads to realise you just need to go down and you get a free kick, like a no brainer.

This kind of referee is what gives football a bad name.  If a proper ref had looked after this game, he'd have booked a Barca player in the first ten mins for diving and they wouldn't have done it again.
He's a manipulative bastard. Another deliberate attempt to put pressure on people in the game, which he thinks he'll get away with because of his "standing" in the game and his fucking knighthood.

How does UEFA choose the refs for these matches? What are their standards? Cause really, that was probably the most abysmal refereeing I have ever seen. Is there any post-game evaluation process? Is there any hope that Vassaras will never work again?

What I hate is that the refs too often fall for Ronaldinho's 'nice' appearance, even though he's a dirty c*nt. He dives and gets freekicks for that in 90% of the cases and at the same time he tackles like a mad-man and doesn't even get a foul against him. I don't know about the situation where Momo had to go off and if there was a foul on Ronaldinho before that, but that certainly wasn't a foul by Sissoko. Or a situation before that were he lunged in on Gerrard and we didn't even get a freekick. I really liked him some time ago, but I think he really is becoming a dirty player...

This ref just had a different view of what football is about compared to what we have in this country.

He blew for fouls on the slightest contact and booked Agger for a nothing tackle.

The most incredible decision came in the second half when Zambrotta obstructed Gerrards run around the full back, but Stevie fended him off and ran on to collect the ball. This clown of refs blew for a foul against Gerrard.I have seen this move by many full backs but have never seen one get a foul given for him when the winger manages to avoid the obstruction.

Thought he was good for the first 10 minutes and shit for the rest

Booking Agger because he was told to, and giving a foul again Momo when Ronaldinho fouled and injured him stand out as two of the worst

The referee tonight was laughable. Literally. People in the ground near me were laughing after about50 minutes, having gone from anoyed, to despair, to just accepting he was a comedy bellend. So in that case, the Russell Brand of refereeing.

Just thankful he didnt have to make any big calls. Didnt make any massive howlers as such but his distinctly 'European' style pernicketiness was maddening...several yellows when in the match only Kuyt's foul was in any way worthy of one

he was frigging useless, he had no idea what a tackle was, he allowed nothing even remotely physical for a challenge and was conned numerous times by dives.

He was poor in parts, but it is European football what did you expect, the referees are always officious.

I thought that he made some good decisions though. He awarded a goal kick to us correctly from a very difficult angle, he got the back pass right, despite the pressure.

Also you must take into consideration that it was in the Nou camp, with 80 odd thousand barca fans jeering whenever a tackle is made by the opposition. Although I did not think much of the crowd, compared say to a European night at Anfield. I think many of them thought the win was a guarantee.

As I said previously

He gave us a soft freekick which lead to the first goal.

He didnt send off Agger when he molested Gudjohnson on the touchline already on a  yellow

But I guess I must have been the only person to see that

I'm sorry but I cant get with the hounding of refs

Its too convenient. Lose and its the ref's fault.

Win and we try to make the victory even more heroic by saying we did it playing against 12 men, 'rolls eyes'

Convenient? Its a fact that refs make game-changing decisions that are not always correct - but most intelligent fans are just as quick to praise a ref as they are to criticise him. I'm sure we're all grateful for  the soft free-kick and not sending Agger off, (not to mention not awarding Ronaldinho a penalty early on) but the fact remains the match was characterized by poor decisions, most of which were against LFC. I think we felt lucky as a team that none of these decisions changed the game in Barca's favour.

All that being said - most of this discussion wouldnt be taking place if he hadn't awarded a yellow card after pressure from Deco. Unfortunately that and one or two other incedents really characterized his performance in the eyes of our supporters.

@kkhaku

So you agree that the decisions I highlighted were BIG decisions in our favour

I even forgot about the Ronaldinho incident

As pundits liek to say ' I've seen them given'

None of the petty freekicks changed the game in Barcas favour but the refs big 3 decisions he gave us changed the game in our favour, yet he is still being criticised

Im struggling to see the sense in that
