Riggott Anfield bound??
« on: October 4, 2001, 11:57:40 PM »
A derby site seems to think GH is going to offer 5 mil for Riggott.
http://www.derbycounty-mad.co.uk/news/loadnews.asp?r=140270

any thoughts? just the Rams getting desperate or what?

THis has been running for a couple of days now ... Derby are being forced to make sales to meet a projected shortfall ... manager is gutted ... but one of their options is to sell Riggott and apparently we did put in an offer during the summer but were knocked back a) because the offer was lower than 5 mil. and b) because at that time they weren't under instructions to sell. If we get him,  would we expect to see someone go ? Traore ? Wright ? Hmmm ...

I heard this (third hand from a "good" source) a couple of weeks ago and so I tuned into see Leeds v Derby on Sky so that I could take a look at Riggott.

I have to say that I was very impressed and despite Leeds winning 3-0 it was clear that Riggott is a very talented player. Quick and comfortable on the ball but still capable of the odd crunching tackle.

Can't say if he's a better prospect than Wright or Traore but, on this limited evidence, he'd be a good addition to any Premiership squad. Even if we did sign him I can't see him breaking up the Sami & Steph show just yet but if Babbel doesn't recover soon we could probably do with some extra cover.

It would also be a signing in close keeping with Gerard's policy of buying for the future. The squad for 2003/4 is already shaping up nicely don't you think? Kirkland, Gerrard, Owen, Barros, Le Tallec, Sinama Pongolle, Wright, Riggott, Welsh, Vignal, Carragher, not forgetting Jamie Redknapp who'll be just about over his injury problems by then. ;)

Bollocks will he. Central midfield duo will be Gerrard and Biscan.

Bob, I know you're a Biscan fan, but don't you think we should wait until he's had a few decent games first? Redknapp has played far, far better than the best Biscan performance so far. Having said that, if JR's ever fit enough to play again it will be a bonus!!

Id be the first to point out that biscan hasnt been much good for us in the past - when he played the odd game at the end of last season he was...well, shite, to be frank. However, there is a reason why GH bought him, and that is that he saw an enormous talent of the future. Igor looks to me like a player who needs confidence, which he can only get by playing often and well.

As for Redknapp, I have my doubts if he will ever establish himself as a first team regular again. JR is a player who never lived up to his enormous potential.

DISCLAIMER: JR has never really had a consistent run in the team withseen with Stevie G. JR alongside Stevie G is a different proposition to JR alongside Ince. It is very possible that SG will cover JR's weaknesses in the way that ince never could, thus they could be a perfect centre mid partnership.

JR's too old. This thread is about the future; Iggy's barely 22 ...

Barely 22? Iggy's had his 23rd birthday!! dob 04/05/1978

As for JR not fullfilling his enormous potential, granted, but he's still miles better than the majority of Premiership midfielders - he just should have been better than Beckham, as Terry Venables recently said.

Also, as I've argued for ages, and as pointed out here, he's never had a run alongside a decent central midfielder, ala Stevie G!

As for Biscan, well I know he has the talent, but it's about so much more than that. He deserves time, but he also has a lot to prove.

Ah but you forget, he's Croatian, and Croats invented time, as well as the tie, the hamburger, the seven wonders of the world, and parliamentary democracy. So if he says he's 22, I believe him.

Crikey, the conclusive and well-thought out arguments on here have me backtracking dangerously on Igor!

I'll raise my glass (of water) to him proving a success, mind. I mean, if the guy can bend the space-time continuum, he's gotta be able to get a place in the team, eh?

Are you now saying that Iggy has the ability to quantum-teleport from one penalty box the other, thus bypassing the midfield, popping up on the edge of the D and setting phasers to 'stunning' with a belting drive past Barthez into the top corner, GOOOOOAAAAAAALLLLLLL!!!!!

This I can't wait to see!

COME ON IGGY!

HE'S A SENSATION, HE'S... CROATIAN! IGGY BEE, IGGY BEE.

This is something I wrote yonks ago when Iggy first arrived at Anfield, and people started criticising his haircut :

Quote
The truth is, Igor comes from Croatia.
Amongst well known facts about Croatia are :

- They invented the hamburger. They call it pljeskavica.

- They invented the tie. In fact, the country is apparently named after the tie. Or vice-versa. The word "cravat" comes from Hrvatska, the Croatian for Croatia !

- According to the propaganda you find in Croatia Airlines magazines and in useful publications printed by the government and left in most hotel rooms, Croatia also invented democracy, the seven wonders of the world, radio, and America.

- According to the same propaganda, Croatia has attained more Olympic medals per capita than any other nation. And again according to Croatia Airlines magazine, this could be because of their "unique and refined gene-pool." Hmmm.

- The same edition of the magazine also claimed that Croatia has produced more finalists in Miss World per capita than nearly every other nation, and this was definitely attributed to their "unique and refined gene-pool." Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

- The Croatian government's publishing deptartment recently published a book in English called "A Taste of Croatia." The book was partly (and hilariously) sponsored by Vegeta, a strange and locally ubiquitous food additive which is like a mix of those old style packet soups and monosodium glutamate.

Parts of Croatia are phenomenally beautiful. Other parts are very grim indeed. Zagreb is a hideous sprawl with a tiny but interesting old town near the centre. It tries too hard to be Western European, and isn't. This, however, is preferable to other areas, which, whilst topographically fascinating, try too hard to be throwbacks to mittel-europa of the 1930s. It is easy to see the new found pride in the national identity since independence as charming; it is however somewhat overstated to the point of being scary.

I love the place, I'd jump at the chance to go tomorrow (if it weren't for the impending cup finals !). As long as I could come back a week later.

Amidst all this, it should be noted that part of the scarily nationalistic pride (and I mean it, the prevailing culture is in places very dark and very extreme) is a penchant for closely cropped hair, with flat-tops. It's a militaristic, even fascistic look - I'm trying to leave the politics out of it : this is a comment on style !

And so Igor's haircut need to be seen in this context : it is a triumph of tolerant, multicultural values in our pluralistic team! Leave the lad alone ! His haircut is a massive achievement ! Thousands of young Croats idolise him : he is setting a fine role model !

Hajde, Igore !

I've just read from the awful, i mean offical site about Le Boss trying to get Derby's Chris Riggot. And the rumour that Vergard Heggem is being used as bait to get Riggot!   :o

Here's the link to find out more about the rumour:-

With a soft spot for the redmen of Liverpool since the League Cup Semi Final 1984. RIP to the 39 in Brussels and of course the 96.

If Houllier was prepared to get rid of Rob Jones because he was always injured...

Personally, I don't see a place for VG in the starting line up, but he's still a useful player to have around.

To be fair had a spine that was made of a damp paper towel, pity.
Vedgy when fit will be a quality squad playe, believe me. I hope he gets his injuries behind him and gets a few starts back to back, if he breaks down again, we kill him, that simple. ok?
