I have a 4s and it's locked to a carrier is Australia, I just moved back to Ireland. Any way I can unlock it myself?

Searched the web but theres so much shite to trawl through I don't know what actually works.

Get in touch with your carrier in oz. If your contract is up and fully paid then the carrier should unlock it for you for free. Its something they can do electronically.

If you are worried about the cost of that call then maybe someone you know over there can ringon your behalf

Thanks mate. No my plans isn't fuly paid, still paying for another 6 months. Buti lost the phone on the plan and bought another outright myself to continue the plan on. So technically it's my phone!

So I'm going to have to unlock it otherwise. Im iOS 5.1.1. Going to be difficulty.

The phone you bought outright. Was that bought from your carrier? If so then they can unlock it at a cost (its about £20 over here). You'll still be stuck with your contract unless you pay them off.

No.1 check if you have an app called Passbook.
No.2 check settings > about
No.3 you download it from itunes or from the phone itself.


However if you bought it on Saturday I very much doubt it will come pre loaded with iOS 6 as this only was released last night.

New maps app. I had a play around in work and sake it to direct me home and it took me to te street road in London not Liverpool. Quick google search and it seems I'm not the only one this happens to.

Every time Apple launch a new product somebody says something along these lines.

"The 4S is only an incremental upgrade, blah, blah blah..."

Yesterday, Apple announced that the iPhone 5 shifted 2 million units in just 24 hours after pre-orders began on September 14. This surpassed the previous record of 1m units set by its predecessor, the iPhone 4S.

The Carphone Warehouse has now announced that it too experienced record demand for the iPhone 5 after starting advanced orders last Friday.

The UK's largest independent mobile retailer said that it has taken four times as many pre-orders for the new Apple smartphone as any other handset since it started trading in 1989.

What's your point? A lot of people switched to the iphone when it offered a genuine game-changer as a phone - its no surprise that the new phone will sell well. Maybe the next one will too. Maybe the one after that. But unless Apple makes some useful innovations at some point people are going to switch to someone else who has. My post was about teh long term future of the company not about trading on past glories. The success of the iphone you quote is evidence that people will switch if theres a good alternative.

I'm sorry but I don't understand what you mean

On your phone click Settings, then go to General, then Software Update.  This should then search for the latest version of iOS which will be 6.  You'll need to be on WiFi though.

Otherwise iTunes is already on the phone as an app - but it's for downloading music / podcasts e.t.c

To download the software on your computer (iOS 6 I mean) then you'll need to download the full iTunes to your computer and do it that way.

Hanging around outside the Apple store in town like a bad geek is the easiest way to get it on launch. I'm not that arsed now. I got iOS 6 last night on the iPad and the maps app is absolutely awful. It'll be alright as satnav if you're on unlimited data but the rest of the app is awful. I think losing Google Maps happened a bit too early for Apple.

I don't think so. It's being reported that the contract to use the Maps API expired and Apple refused to renew it. Shooting themselves and their users in the foot really.
