Bordeaux vs Liverpool, CL, 18th Oct 2006 (PreMatch Build Up)
« on: October 16, 2006, 08:22:48 am »
Another tricky away game that will need us to be close to our best, especially in defence.

Expect a few changes to starting line-up, as is the norm these days.

Not read anywhere if Momo is going to be fit or not but if fit expect him to return.

1-0 victory, Steven Gerrard the scorer  :)

From the official -

Bordeaux will go into Wednesday's Champions League clash in high spirits after recording a 1-0 weekend victory over Monaco.
At the Stade Chaban-Delmas, where Liverpool play in midweek, substitute Edixon Perea's second-half goal was enough to clinch a morale-boosting win.

The French outfit are yet to taste victory in this season's Champions League group phase, having drawn with Galatasaray and lost to PSV.

Do we know if Kuyt will be fit?

I would like to see Crouch get another start with Bellamy up front.

Garcia and Gonzales need to be involved as well.

Something like this would suit the game;

                  Reina

  Finnan - Carra - Sami - Riise

Garcia - Gerrard - Xabi - Gonzales

              Crouch - Bellamy

2-0 with Crouch and Bellamy to get one each.

Keeper?
Fowler
Aurelio
Zenden
Pennant

I haven't heard, but I assumed he wasn't any good...If he is good he should start.

If Momo is available;

Gerrard - Momo - Xabi - Gonzales

Garcia then onto the bench in place of Zenden.

Has anyone heard about Kuyt?

Bordeaux are a very defensive team even at home so watch them shut up shop. In yesterday's papers down here they mentioned that they hope to take advantage of the Reds shaky defence- cheek!

I think Zenden will play along with Xabi and Momo.

Wouldn't be stunned to see Stevie on the bench as per usual for a Euro away.

I don't think Bordeaux are any great shakes particularly and clearly are quite defensive as all their games are 0-0 1-0. If we win we're just about through so we need to step up to the plate.

Little Luis to start and score in a 1-0 win.

Am anticipating a tougher game than many are expecting. There is nos such thing as an easy away game in the Champions League. A draw would put us in a decent position although I reckon we have it in us to sneak a win.

Given our perpensity to produce great performances in Europe, especially during very glib league spells, I predict a stoical victory - possibly 1-0.

Rafa will put out a team capable of taking all three points, as he always does, but it wont be our BEST 11. (here we go again!) There will be players 'rested' for the ManU away game on sunday, the likes of Riise, Alonso, Bellamy, Pennant, Hyppia possibly.

Hard to guess Rafa's team, but if he puts out something like

Reina
Finnan - Carra- Agger - Aurelio
Gerrard - Sissoko - Zenden - Gonzales
Crouch - Garcia

.  .  .  it would hardly surprise me, thats typical of him.  And that team is CAPABLE of winning.

I'd be more careful with the predictions...I live in France & watch a lot of games...OK Bordeaux are having problems at the moment but the w/ends win against Monaco will give them a boost & Micoud is a class player...we should beat them but if our defense or Reina has a shocker (as often they do ) then we could lose this one. The important thing is to not underestimate them & go for a win... Kuyt & Crouch up front a strong middle...no lightweights cos we must control the middle of the park & keep the ball moving....& as ever watch out for the counter attack as Darcheville maybe "Grosnaldo" but he's quick & strong & Laslandes is good in the air which is something we are not. All in all I'd settle for o=o but a "good" LFC should win this one ...just depends on which LFC turns up & can they finally play well for 90 minutes...something that I've rarely seen under Rafa...or anyone else for that matter since King Kenny was manager !!!!!

Might as well put my 2p in now seeing as I'm flying out tomorrow.

I'd go 4-5-1 for this, match them up and then player for player we're better than them and will hopefully take a result back with us. Am I right in thinking we've still never won a European away in France against a French side?

I'm going for:

Reina

Finnan
Hyypia
Agger
Riise

Pennant
Sissoko
Alonso
Gonzales

Garcia

Crouch

Subs:

Dudek (not suspended for CL is he?)
Carra
Aurelio
Gerrard
Kuyt (if fit)
Bellamy
Zenden

A strong side with good attacking options on the bench, gives Gerrard a rest for the weekend when we need him at his very best, and Carra needs to wake up this season too.

Come on Redmen!
Balotelli, Falcao, Cavani...

I'll be shocked if it's anyone other Etoo. Etoo or no-one. Simples.

In fact, I'll do you all a favor and ban myself from the January transfer window forum if we get anyone other than Etoo.

Either way I'd leave him out. If he's tired I'd tell him he needs the rest, if he's out of sorts I'd tell him he's dropped because his performances haven't been up to scratch. Hopefully that rocket would do him good with the Mancs coming up.

Can't keep making this same "tired" excuse for Gerrard. It's October, he needs to be playing and finding his form.

We havent played 4-5-1 for ages what with the 'abundance' of strikers, but with Kuyt & Fowler injured/recovering, this might be just the gameto try it, against a very defensive side that relies largely on conterattacks to score its goals.

All the more 'possibilities' for Rafa.

Pretty sure you're right. I make it six defeats (St Etienne, Auxerre, Strasbourg, PSG, Marseille, Monaco) and one win (Auxerre). Two goals for and twelve against.

We've done OK in France against non-French teams: Real Madrid in the Parc des Princes and various Super Cup visits to Monaco.

It has to change soon...

He can't possibly be tired already. He only played 2 games in the last 2 weeks. Even I could play that many games (if I could put down my pies for long enough  :D )

Sometimes players need games to get back their sharpeness eg. Rooney who looked great on saturday ( I hope he gets injured in the CL this week ).
