Sparklehorse Live In Brighton
« on: October 5, 2006, 08:55:12 am »
Hello gang,

I am desperately after some help and someone may be able to help. Need a ticket for the Sparklehorse gig in Brighton on Monday. Does anyone have one or know ayone who may have one spare?

Cheers,

Nick

My review is now ready - only just seen post.  ;)

The gig was brilliant. I could not tell you the exact setlist as some bugger got there before me. They only played 3 songs off the new record and a mixture from the other 3. His guitar playing was fantastic and the whole gig was a highlight although I really enjoyed Homecoming Queen and Sad & Beautiful World.

It was the first time I have seen them and would definetely go again. I would also recommend them to anyone that has not seen them.

It would also feature as one of my favourite gigs of this year and I have seen some quality (Jeff Tweedy in San Fran, Radiohead in London).

Erm...  Jamie T this Sunday, others lined up for October are  Howling Bells, Lily Allen and The Gossip.  If money allows I'd like to get to iLiKETRAINS, Guillemots, Raconteurs and Lambchop as well this month but we'll see.  The highlight of the autumn gig wise is going to a trip to Amsterdam to see Sufjan Stevens at the Paradiso in November though.  Can't wait.

You?

Oooh last night was good... Especially loved Don't Take My Sunshine Away, Painbirds, It's Not So Hard and Happy Man.

They played a track off Dreamt for Light Years... (has anybody else besides my mate Rick noticed that's a distance, not a period of time) which they apparently hadn't played before in front of people... "and I'm very liable to fuck it up" but if he did, they covered it well!

Ghost in the Sky was on the setlist for the encore but they didn't play it in the end, which was a shame.

I can't remember the whole setlist, even though I was behind the sound guy for a while and could read it, but I know they also played Applebeds, Eyepennies, Morning Hollow, Weird Sisters, Spirit Ditch, Hammering the Cramps, Sad & Beautiful World and Getting it Wrong.

They didn't have the best stage presence I've ever seen, even in Stage 2 at Northumbria (brilliant, tiny venue) but there was some good banter, and the drummer had me in fits with some of his dramatic endings.

Enjoy on Thursday! :wave

Few other gigs lined up - Charlatans, Midlake, Sufjan (if I can afford it), Jarvis Cocker, I Am Kloot, Ben Kweller, The Magic Nos.

Want to do a few more but cost has gone up a lot since my early days of gig going.

Mate, rob your granny rather than miss Sufjan...

I know what you mean - I have a real mental block with any gig over £15. Catch 'em when they're a fiver is my motto.  I quite fancy the Lambchop gig but at £17.50 plus fees I think I might hold out and see if the venue start offering them free or 2-4-1 on the day.   Something the Philharmonic has done in the past.

ok, ok, I've got a spare ticket for Sufjan in Manchester Thursday 2nd November. PM me if interested, face value and share of booking fee (wtf?) so £18. I missed Linkous and co this time round.

At £17.50 I'll also be hanging round the doors for Lambchop at the Phil  :wave

Whew!  That was good.

It's been a while since I've been to a gig and felt young - it certainly was different audience from the glowstick wielding teenagers we were surrounded by last week at the Klaxons gig.  This was a night for the more mature and discerning musical palate.

The band shuffled unannounced onto the stage, Linkous looking wired,  twitchy and nervous.  As Elli said he's not a natural frontman and there was little banter, other than the repeated thank yous of a man obviously yet to be convinced that people love his music.

I love the way that he seemingly cannot bear his songs to sound too nice, assaulting them instead with bursts of noise or by distorting his own voice into a tinny whine.

It was all over far too quickly and after two brief encores we were cast out into the cold.

It's a sad and beautiful world.
