IMHO, the potential challengers include Notre Dame, Auburn, and especially Southern California (again). And West Virginia will contend, if for no other reason than they play a soft schedule in a league that is in a downward spiral. This year will be wide open, but this Buckeyes fan thinks that this will be the Buckeyes' year. Deadly potent offense, and a defense that is young but showed alot of heart in bending but rarely breaking yesterday. By year's end, the offense will be clicking on all cylinders, the defense will be stopping folks more successfully, and OSU will be crowned national champions!

Older thread, I know, but I have to have a chance to gloat about something, since the Redmen didn't give it to me today.

The Ohio State University 42, University of Michigan 39. What a game! What a team. And UM's not 1/2 bad, either.

On to the National Championship game!  :champ :champ :champ

Haha, ya the name doesn't make much sense. I'm not a very big fan of American football, but my Dad graduated from Ohio State and is a huge Buckeyes fan. Ohio State beat their rivals Michigan today and will play for the national title. I don't care about it very much but my dad had a huge party and I got wrapped up in the excitement so it was fun.

I could be wrong, but I think he is referring to the unbelievable amount of body armour/protective gear the American Football players wear, compared to the amount or lack of protective gear worn by rugby players...Like I said, I could be wrong, but I've heard this argument before...:wave

Well, from what I've seen, it seems like the American football players wear more gear but hit much harder than they do in Rugby, whereas in Rugby they wear less padding but don't hit quite as hard. So you decide. Which is tougher? Being hit hard with not much padding, or being hit really, really hard with a lot of padding?

Bit of generalisation from both sides I think mate, but don't think that Rugby Union or League aren't hitting as hard as Gridiron players.  From what I've seen on all sides (and I haven't played any of the games) the hits are equally as big in League and Union with no (minimal) padding.  Therefore in my opinion, the hits are bigger in League and Union...

Have a look at this; few of the hits in League...Its not fantastic quality; but you get the idea.

Technically two, as the punter is usually not the same person as the field goal specialist ;)

2 Questions to those who have been watching:
1. Is Troy Smith a Heisman Trophy winner?
2. Is Troy Smith a 1st Round Draft pick?

And a Poll for the big game:

OSU - Michigan, or
OSU - USC

You might have had a point 10 years ago, but with the amount of padding and scrum caps creeping into the union code (I don't watch league, but I assume it is the same) it is getting closer to American football.  Also the amount of substitutions are getting out of control.  I just watched Ireland - Aussies (great win for the men in green) and I couldn't keep up with who was on the pitch.

and with the clock stopped and huddles as the trainers are on the pitch - Rugby Union is slowly converting to American football and that is a shame and I say that as someone that loves American football - especially college football.  Maybe because it is more rugby-like with option plays and much more open field play than the NFL

Notre Dame-OSU is not an option because even if ND beast USC, they cannot creep up to #2.  The reason, it will be inconceivable that they displace Michigan who had royally twatted them earlier in the season.

So we are left with only 2 choices: ND beats USC, then we have OSU-Michigan.
Or USC beats ND and we have OSU-USC.

Actually..USC has to beat Notre Dame and UCLA....they have 2 games left.

But I personally am against a rematch for the national title. Don't see the point.

Troy Smith is the probable Heisman winner but not a first round draft pick IMO. I'm also against a possible OSU-Michigan rematch. Michigan had their chance last Saturday and didn't get it done.

Or "Is American Football better than Rugby?"  So pretty please.  Go start another thread if you want.  Some of us like Babsketball, some handball, some hockey, some ice hockey, and so on and so forth.  Each one to his own.

Why not First Round, because of his height?

Yes, but if ND beats USC, that is what we are left with.

I a big fan of the SEC and wouldn't mind seeing Florida getting a shot - but what is that likelihood?

If ND beats USC, and Florida "runs the table" (over FSU and the Arkansas/LSU winner in the SEC title game), Florida will pass Michigan. Of that, I have no doubt. But if SC runs the table, they will most likely earn the bid, no matter what Florida does.
Personally, as I live in So Cal, I think USC is vastly overrated. Florida's a better team, and they lost to a very good Auburn team, not a lame-ass team like Oregon State (USC's lone defeat).
ND really has no shot, for the reason mentioned earlier (ass-whuppin' by Michigan). Arkansas needs SC to lose, because even if they run the table (LSU and Florida wins), if SC does the same it comes down to USC 50, Arkansas 14 in the season opener.  And for Michigan to get it, realistically they need USC, Florida and Arkansas to lose. ND beats USC, LSU beats Arkansas and Arkansas beats Florida, and Michigan will get their rematch.
As a Buckeye, do I want it? Heck no... think it takes away from the rivalry. They had their shot, they couldn't do it. Beating them again would be anticlimactic. Losing means it's 1-1, so who's really better? But will they have earned it if the last scenario plays out? I think it will.

BTW, as a HUGE college football fan, this week-end is a dream: Texas/Texas A&M, LSU/Arkansas and a the rivalry game Oregon/Oregon State today (plus Colorado/Nebraska ... more :boring than interesting), and tomorrow has South Carolina/Clemson (rivalry game), Florida/Florida State, Oklahoma/Oklahoma State (rivalry game), Georgia/Georgia Tech (rivalry game) and others, but most importantly... NOTRE DAME/USC!

Still trying to get tix to that game: friend of mine is going, and his son is leaving town before the game, so he might invite me (he's done so in the past)... just nothing official yet. Otherwise, I'm firmly planted in front of the television. I'll probably be blind by the end of the week-end.  ;D

You live in Oregon?

For those who don't know the Oregon v Oregon State game is referred to as The Civil War. It is the , I believe, second longest in State rivalry in college football.

I don't really think many people East of the line drawn down from Washington State to Arizona State cares much about the Oregon-Oregon State rivalry. No offense intended. ;D

If it came down to it, then, I would prefer Florida-OSU.  I can't see Arkansas beating Florida in the SEC game.  And yes, USC is vastly over-rated.

Personally I can't stomach Notre Dame but at +7 1/2 I'd have to like that line for Saturday night's game.
