Watched some retro today and...
« on: August 1, 2006, 10:17:12 PM »
Steven Gerrard was absolutly brilliant as an 18 year old. The match i watched was Liverpool-Everton at Anfield in the 98/99 season. Fowler scored two and Paddy Berger blasted in Liverpools third.
In the dying minutes Everton had three or four big opportunites to level the score. David James was all over the pitch, but Stevie G saved Liverpool time and again.
The commentator suggested that Gerrard, who only played 20 minutes for the injured Heggem, should have been voted man of the match. Gerrard was absolutly amazing as right back that day.
For those of you who were at the match or has followed Liverpool closer than me, was that derby match Gerrards real break trough? Was it all talk about God after the game or was Gerrard on everybodys lips?

Team that day:
James, Heggem, Staunton, Song, Matteo, McManaman, Redknapp, Ince, Berger, Owen, Fowler.
And could he play!

remember gerrard at RB at anfield against idan tal?

think we won 3-1, might have even been when barmby scored?

anyway, that was the most dominant display i've ever seen from a full back. poor old tal got dragged off after about 60 minutes, absolutely raped by the youngster.

beautiful.

Aye, remember him as a tall skinny right back in his number 28 shirt full of enthusiasm. Those top draw displays had us all talking about the lad Gerrard, what a player he turned out to be  ;)

remember him playing in a European game, and pinging 50 yard crossfield passes straight on to player's feet/chest. very young looking and very skinny, but lookedunbelievably confident (also looked like a complete scally - so he was every young lad's hero I'd imagine!)

Also remember Ince's comments about him, saying he knew he'd make it when he crunched Jamie Redknapp in training before he was even in the first team!

I think it was Ince who Gerrard clattered into in training. That's what I seem to think anyway.

Yeah it was the other way around. Jamie said Stevie had nutmegged Ince on his first day training with the first team.
