I threw my mates' ashes over the Istanbul crowd
« on: May 25, 2006, 06:16:29 PM »
IT WAS a match Ronnie Harrison and Clive Hartley would not have wanted to miss.

So Reds fan Karl Howard took his uncle Ronnie and friend Clive's ashes with him to Istanbul to witness their team win the Champions League in spectacular style.

Tucked away in his pocket, in two red envelopes, were his friends' ashes.

As Liverpool clinched victory in a nailbiting penalty shoot-out, an ecstatic Karl threw a handful of Ronnie and Clive's ashes into the air, showering celebrating fans.

Today, on the anniversary of the victory, Karl told the ECHO: "Never again will anyone see football like that, but for us the memory of our two mates being with us and sharing everything is just alittle bit special."

Karl, 30, of Kirkby, added: "No way were Ronnie and Clive missing the game. As Jamie Carragher started to run at the fans, up in the air went the ashes of our two mates and into the Istanbul night.

"Then they came down over all over ecstatic Reds fans. A stranger felt something on his hair and said: 'what's that?'. When we told him he was a bit uneasy with it at first, but his mates were choked and thought the gesture was brilliant."

And some more stuff about the final last year, here.

Nice gesture, but i wouldn't be very happy if it got thrown on me.  I could understand if they'd thrown them on the pitch or something, but not over the fans.

I agree it would have been more suited on the pitch or left inside the stadium, but to throw it over fans isn't very pleasant.

Over the pitch would probably have been better. But as someone said, at least it wasn't a corpse. Although I wouldn't mind seeing Weekend at Bernie's 3: One Night in Istanbul.

I saw something in the echo recently very similar, a kopite who'd been going the match for 50 years died, his son wanted to sprinkle his fathers ashes on the kop as was requested in his will. He phoned the club up and they said it would be fine but obviously he would have to use some sort of plastic receprical as the urn wouldn't be allowed in the ground, in the end lad found an empty pepsi bottle, dried it out and put his fathers ashes in it. when he got to the ground the stewards wouldn't let him in the ground with it :(

comes to something when you can't take a bottle of pop the match :-X

Why would it be a wind up? To take the piss out of two dead people, who were your mates and you still speak to the family? Hardly the funniest thing ever is it  :butt

I think it's a good touch, plenty of people would like their ashes spread at Anfield, so why not at the place of one of the best nights in our history?

If you read the story properly, you will see he didn't throw them at someone he threw them up in the air. I doubt he meant for anyone to be covered, and it says only one person was funny about it, so I am guessin' no one else was arsed, they obviously knew how much it meant to the fella.

And as redferlife says it was a small amount, not the lot tipped over some fella's head

Over people?? I wouldn't know i'm atheist.

On Ash Wednesday they make the sign of the cross on the foreheads of the parishioners with the ashes of the palms from Palm Sunday.

It is a little sick to think that it is brunt up people that landed on people but at that point it would have been like getting cigarette ashes on someone. Much worse in your head than in reality I think. I understand the feeling behind taking the ashes though.
What fun would a championship be without some hiccups?

Much as I respect my fellow Liverpool supporters, I'm not keen on the idea of inhaling one.
