Bargain! Sony shooting themselves in the foot there. Daft price cos of the blu-ray, which may not even win the battle vs HD DVD.

Yeah, but the kids aren't gonna buy one because they can't afford it and mummy and daddy aren't gonna just buy them one. Less sales = less game sales = less ROI for developers making games for it = less games = flop.

I've been playing SNES games again and fuck me, I miss the days when you'd go into Future Zone or Games Exchange and see walls and walls of random crap that today you wouldn't even dream of playing. It's funny how even the dross was playable then.

Balls to them.

Do something productive with £425, not to mention what people will be paying outside of shops. I was interested for a good ten minutes but even after price drops by the time it reaches my price bracket I'll be buying it out of a car boot while wearing a flat cap.

I'm working my way through all the Sam & Max type stuff ;D. It's amazing, much more fun that the photo-realistic cack my mates are wetting themselves over. Between that and my new collection of library cards I'll be having a lot more fun than with a 'bargain' Betamax 2006 player.

Considering  advanced technology inside over the Xbox 360 which includes a Blu Ray drive, compared to the X-Box 360,I don't think the extra £140 is that bad.How much will a HD Drive for the Xbox 360 cost when they release it?

Isn't the hard drive in the PS3 three times as big.I think if I remember correctly that the PS3 can output 1080P something the XBox can't do,as I think the XBox uses MPEG2 whereas the PS3 will use MPEG4.

Don't think the XBox has a digital out for video whereas the PS3 will have HDMI.

I've no biased to either as I'm not a console man,but on paper, the specs for the PS3 far outweigh the XBox.

I bet you can't even get a stand alone Blu Ray drive for less than £500 when they are released.

PS3 to cost £425 in the UK
 By Tony Smith
18th May 2006 16:06 GMT
Sony's 60GB PlayStation 3 will cost British buyers £425 ($803) when it ships on 17 November, the head of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe's UK operation has revealed. He went on to call the machine "cheap" and a "bargain".

Interviewed by Eurogamer, SCE UK Managing Director Rat Maguire said: "I don't think it's an expensive machine - I think actually, it's probably a cheap machine. If you think a Blu-Ray player by itself might be £600-700, and we're coming in at just £425, it's a bargain."

Until now, Sony has given no indication of what UK PS3 pricing might be. It has quoted a European price of €599 for the 60GB model and €499 for the cut-down, gamer-oriented 20GB versiom of the console. The price quoted by Maguire is around £20 more than a straightforward Euro-to-Sterling conversion, but that's not uncommon for Sony's UK prices.

Maguire admitted the 60GB PS3's price was not "mass market", and again stressed the machine would nonetheless be the cheapest way to buy into Blu-ray. It's clear from Maguire's comments that Sony sees the 60GB PS3 more as a cut-price AV system for early HD adopters. Other Sony executives have hinted as much in the recent past.

In other words, gamers looking for the successor to the PS2 will opt for the lower, more Xbox 360-like spec, while the 60GB machine will be pitched at a different class of buyer - the AV consumer. It's an interesting strategy: using the low-end PS3 to sell Blu-ray - and Blu-ray to sell the high-end PS3. The fate of the next-generation optical disc format and of Sony's next-generation games console have always been known to be closely link, but until now it's not been clear how tightly bound the two are. ®

I had heard it was going to be £700, still £425 is too expensive for a kids Christmas present. I steamed in and got the PS2 for £400 in December 2000 and ended up still buying PS1 games for a year until any decent games came out. I can see these going for a grand each on Ebay the week before Christmas and fights breaking out between parents in Argos.

It sounds like very very few games will be produced in 1080p though.

For gamers I'd say XBox360 looks a better bet right now unless you don't mind throwing your cash around, as others have said for AV enthusiasts and those who want a Blu-ray drive on the cheap, then PS3 would obviously be the better option.

For all the talk of the spec of machines the early games won't push either platform too hard and Sony's launch line-up doesn't look too wonderful.

I'll be sticking with PC gaming anyway

Seems overpriced to me.  I smell a rat...

But about the pre-order thing, I assume you would only have to leave a small deposit, e.g £5 or £10, so if you'd done that it isn't really committing you to buying one.  Plus it's over a year away.

It'll be interesting to see what supplies are like at launch, if they get a fair number of units to market I wouldn't bet on being able to get a huge profit on resale at that price, depends how good the Blu-ray player is I supect

I wouldn't bet on it.

Don't forget the dedicated Blu Ray players are more than likely going to be better specced than the player in the PS3.I don't expect the Blu Ray in the PS3 to be the best quality when it comes to playing films .

I expect The PS3 to be a jack of all trades and certainly not the master when it comes to showing films.

You can go and spend upwards of £3000 for a DVD player now,yet still pick one up in Asda for £20.They both play the same discs,it's just that one does it a hell of a lot better than the other.
