Guide to watching Liverpool around the world
« on: May 4, 2006, 01:50:42 PM »
Welcome to the Rawk guide to watching Liverpool around the world. The idea is simple, we're going to list the bars, clubs and other venues in various countries which might show Liverpool matches. That way when people travel to a new country they can make sure they don't miss that important game. To find a venue click on a continent:

Asia
Africa
North America
South America
Europe
Australasia

About this guide
All of the entries have been submitted by forum members as places to watch Liverpool but it's still a good idea to check with the venue themselves. Where possible we've listed the contact details and addresses, if there's an omission that you can help us correct please let us know on the submissions thread.

In some of the entries you'll see the username of the person who submitted the entry. This means they're happy to answer further questions via instant message. You may even find they will be attending the same game and you can meet up for a drink.

Several of the entries have been submitted by supporter groups in that particular city/country. Where available we've included a link to the group and would encourage you to visit their site and say hello prior to arrival, they may have more up to date information.

Remember that situations change and just because a venue used to screen the games does not guarantee that they still do. If you find one of our entries out of date let us know via the submissions thread as this thread will be kept locked. Likewise if you've found new venues so we can add them to the list. It's always nice to hear the experiences of fellow reds travelling so if you find the information useful or if you would like to add to the existing review then let us know.

For ease of use the entries have been split into continents, and countries. As the guide grows it might be that we can cover regions within countries. For now however just pick the continent you're interested in from the list above and then select individual countries from the mini menus. If your country isn't listed in the menu there may still be an entry, this guide has been altered many times!

Additional: There's another Irish bar 'Delaineys' in Kowloon, top end of Peking Road (Nathan Road end) next to China Travel Service shows most Premier League matches which are screened on Star sports or ESPN. Good gathering of REDS in there.
Nice big screen, good beer (best Guiness since leaving England) and nice food. Being in a cellar (only a single door entry from street level) down stairs to the bar, the view is sometimes restricted though, but an excellent bar all the same.
Hope it helps, Goffry.

Bar itself is so-so (prefer Delaney's/Dickens), likewise with food, but atmosphere is better here (well, obviously - being full of Reds).

Remarks: This a not a dedicated Reds bar or even a sports bar.  It is just an excellent small neighbourhood bar with Kingfisher on tap, a friendly staff, great atmosphere and excellent bar snacks - with one 21" TV.  Sit at the bar counter and sip your beer while watching the game and when we score a couple of hands will wave in the air.  Excellent place for a drink in general.   There are two channels in India, part of the ESPNStar stable, that show live games in parallel.  Get there early and ask the barman to turn to the correct channel in advance.  For TV information, go to www.espnstar.com.

City:         Almaty
Name:      Mad Murphy's
Address:  Tole Bi, 12
Tel:          (3272) 91 28 56
Website:
Remarks:Only recommended if there is no 6 Nations Rugby on. They seem to prefer the oval ball. Go down Dostyk (one of the main downhill roads) to Tole Bi (one of the main horizontal roads). Turn right when you see the signpost. Typical Irish ex-pat pub. Just the one screen but pretty decent. They use South African feeds and there's a decent atmosphere. Reasonable pub grub and the beers you'd expect.

Address: Satpaev St., 27
Tel:         (3272) 92 49 00
Website: http://www.tinkoff.ru/en/?p=180
Remarks:A standby for when Murphy's is showing rugby. Start from the Monument to Independence on Satpaev, with the mountains on your left and downhill on your right. A brisk 10 to 15 minute walk and you're there. A modern building with a curved first floor and a steel brewery vat outside. Has its own microbrewery serving its own beers. Room for 300 people, mostly a young crowd who are not ex-pats and have no interest in football. But there are a lot of suspended TV's (and one large screen projection) which seem fairly reliable in showing Premier League games, including the 12.45 ones. The channels on display are Russian and there is no sound so don't go there expecting atmosphere. The tables tend to get reserved on Saturday nights and, no matter how empty they remain, the staff are reluctant to let you take them. Apart from home-brewed beer the menu features everything from pizza to local dishes like shashlyk (kebabs).

Philippines

City:        Manila
Name:     Heckle and Jeckle
Address: Jupiter St, Makati City (if in doubt, tell the taxi driver it's near Burgos St...)
Tel:         +63 (02) 890 6904
Website: www.heckleandjeckle.org (shows sports schedule)
Remarks: Beer, football, curry and women all within 100 metres - what more do you  need to know?! Ex-pat watering hole with a couple of pool tables. One large screen and several suspended TVs showing different matches. This is the place most likely to show games which aren't on the local Star or ESPN channels (Philippines isn't as well served as other Asian countries). Decent food, but if you go out, turn left and cross the main road there is a Persian restaurant which does good curries. If you turn right at the main road and right again, you're in Burgos St - the centre of all the girlie bars, but that's a different topic...

Website: www.handlebar.com.ph  (shows sports schedule)
Remarks: Originally a bikers’ bar but now pretty cosmopolitan. Larger than Heckle and Jeckle, a couple of pool tables and a good large screen high on the wall – so decent visibility from most parts. It doesn’t have a lot of other screens though so, if there are games being played concurrently, you may be safer at H&J. The two bars are only a couple of minutes apart. Food is OK. Otherwise, all the same comments as for H&J.

Remarks: 'Harry's @ Chijmes'  is the place where the East of Anfield LFC supporters' club meet for all live telecasts. The crowd is a good mix of expats and locals - all passionate Reds. The atmosphere during matches is brilliant with singing throughout, and with the pub completely decked up with Red flags. If you're not at Anfield, this is the place you wanna be!

Remarks: I used to frequent this place when I lived in Taipei.  Good Pub with a good number of screens.  Depending on the game sound will be on but other tvs will show other games.  Owner is a Red but can be abit grumpy.  Good food too. As with most Asia pubs expect alot of Manu and Chelsea Asian Fans but there are some good Reds too.  Don't expect a great atmosphere except for big games.

Various bars, big screens, and  normal TVs, with diverse games being shown if they are being played at the same time. Sometimes a cover charge is made, if the games are on pay TV, but it in my experience it was no more than $10 Can. Friendly place with some good food, including The full Irish Breakfast, if you please.
Good crowd. The (12:45 bst) (7:45 local) early kickoffs will probably not be shown, unless it's getting toward end of season (6 pointer) a  semi or a final.

Website:   www.abbeypub.com
Remarks:  Odd spot this, It looks like a hunters lodge on the inside, and it hosts some of the better underground hip hop shows, and indie music shows.  As for the footie, the entrance fees are usually half (10$ vs 20$) than at Fado's for finals and such, and the service is better cause it's not that packed.

Remarks:  This is close by my house, so it's easier to get to for the 6:45 am games.  The food is crap and so is the service.  A lot of ex-pats, but it is an Arsenal, Celtic, and supporters pub.
They also have the largest Everton scarf I've ever seen.  20$ for finals and friendlies (sometimes) call to find out in advance.  Easy to get to from downtown, half a block west from the Irving Park brown line stop.  Probably 20 mins from downtown. If your downtown may as well go to Fado's though (see below).

Remarks: $10 cover charge to watch the game - it was shown in an upstairs bar. From memory, there were a couple of large TV's, but the dightlines weren't great. Electronic leprechauns blocking the view, etc. Expect all the usual stuff you associate with the whole fake Irish bar phenomenon. They do food, and the staff were reasonably friendly.

Additional:

They never charge for Premier League games- only for premium content on Setanta, like every other bar.  Also, the staff is fabulous and welcoming with a couple of Irishmen, Englishmen, Scotsmen, and even an Australian.  Even for kick-offs at 6:45 in the morning there are at least a dozen fans there, and it can get packed for big games.  Unfortuntaley, there are a few mancs in the crowd, but they've managed to keep the Chelsea fans out.  Highly recommend!

Remarks: Has Setanta Sports, Fox Sports World, ESPN . . . basically shows every footie match you can get here (even some lower division games), and, of course, all the Liverpool games. The atmosphere is fantastic; only people who truly love the Beautiful Game show up during matches. It gets very packed during big matches, so show up early. During the Benfica game I was one of only two people not from Liverpool. Owned and operated by Irishmen. Only problem is that on days like St. Patrick's (or when there is a major American sporting event) it gets somewhat "trendy".

All Fado's in the USA carry footy.

Another resource is the Setanta venue finder, you'll need a US zipcode for the area you are asking about ( if anyone has any questions about a local zipcode..ask, someone will give you a local one).

Also...check here for what matches will be shown on tv in the US and Canada and the

City:        Hamburg, Germany
Name:     Finnegan's Wake
Address: Börsenbrücke 4, 20457 Hamburg (v. close to the rathaus)
Website: http://www.finneganswakeirishpub.com/
Remarks:It's alright like, seems to show most of our games if we're on any of the British (not sure re. Setanta?) or German channels. Not the most amazing pub in the world and their 'pints' are only 400ml and cost about €3.50 which is pretty steep in HH. The lads at work seem to think it's a great place to go and get leathered on Saturday nights but I can never be arsed as there's nowhere else good nearby.
Submitted by: Party Phil

Additional:
The problem with Hamburg is that although there's quite a lot of Irish pubs, not too many of them show the footy, and those that do aren't that reliable. Between Finnegan's and Murphy's I've managed to see almost every game this season, but it's a bit of a lottery whether you'll turn up and the game will be on. I find Murphy's to be less reliable (esp for CL games) and always head to Finnegan's first with Murphy's as a back up.

Remarks: Irish bar, funnily enough. Have watched few Liverpool games here, mainly early kick-offs, not so good for a 3pm Saturday kick-off (try the Stella Pub first for those). They have numerous flat screen TVs with multiple feeds. The only time I couldn't get to see a Liverpool game in Riga was a CL qualifier at the start of last season as they could not pick up ITV coverage. Beer reasonably priced (Guinness available), food average.

Remarks: The main venue for televised football in Bergen, situated smack in the middle of the city centre (which admittedly isn't that bloody big). Three floors with screens everywhere, both outside and inside. Dodgy channels abound (if a Liverpool game is televised somewhere in the world, it'll be on here). Quite classily decorated with football memorabilia; love the signed Sampdoria-kit from the early nineties. Second floor is a bit upmarket, downstairs can get considerably raunchier. Variable atmosphere, but usually good at our games. You might even get PST going with the right crowd.

Remarks: Not actually seen an LFC game in here but watched the Manc derby in August. The pub is in a quiet street but pretty central and is easy to spot as it's big and red with orange trees outside. The atmosphere was a bit quiet, only a couple of mancs hanging around and a few Celtic fans watching their game made most of the noise, although to be fair it was a lunchtime ko. The shape and layout of the pub is not exactly conducive to making a great viewing experience and I think it would be really annoying to find a decent spec for a popular game. Despite all that, I did really like the pub and will be going back sometime.

Remarks: I watched the LFC v Chelsea game here at the start of the season. You could not ask for a better location for a pub than this place, directly outside the cathedral. It's a big pub with several different rooms and when I was there they showed our game in the main room on the big screen and it was pretty busy. Unfortunately, after watching the Manc derby (see above) and our game I was pretty leathered so don't remember a huge amount about the place or the atmosphere, although I have a feeling I was probably the only person in the whole place singing. I expect this will be my regular haunt for the 2nd half of the season, unless anybody has another suggestion.

I've finally updated the guide. Once more thanks to those who have submitted entries. It's grown into quite a useful resource for the travelling Liverpool supporter.

If you would like to submit or edit an existing entry please use the following format:

City:

Address:
Tel:

Even if you don't have all the information it saves a lot of time if you can put what you do know into the above format. It also keeps the guide nice and tidy.

Any submissions will be added to the guide by a moderator.

If you're travelling somewhere that isn't listed you can use this topic to ask for guidance. Remember to include anywhere you discover so that others can benefit.

It's difficult to keep it as a sticky due to demand from other topics. You can always find it via the signpost thread however - it's there for just these kind of threads.

Flying over to Berlin, Germany,  for 3 weeks in September, anyone know a decent pub to watch the matches? ::)

Got my connections and would be sniffing about (and will give recommendations), but any in advanced assistance would be helpful.
I'm left, and I'm right.

How about the fuck off bar, just up the street from fuck off beach?

Actually Narf, the Aussie bar down in Hat Rin would probably be the best atmosphere. Now fuck off! :P ;D

Actually, I watched the United game there in Oct '06. We lost 2-0 if I remember so it might be an unlucky bar.

Basically....., if we lose on sat, I'm blaming you.

Happened to be there for the FA cup final in '06. Great memories. Plenty of hammers in there too and they were sound. Gutted, but sound.

Right guys, after a mad amount of hunting in Bombay, I've found this place called 'The Sports Bar' and just next to it, 'The Brew Bar', both at a place called Phoneix High Street Mills, Lower Parel.

Good places with footy friendly crowds, good drinks (Carlsberg ;D), and they show all the League games being played on the day with stress on important ones, i.e the top 4.

Should be helpful for anyone in Bombay :D  :wave

City:        Paris
Name:     Rush Bar
Address: 32 rue Saint Sebastien 75011 Paris
Tel:         +33 1 43 57 32 04
Website: http://www.liverpoolfrance.com/Pubs.html
Remarks:  This pub is where the official French branch meet as the place is run by the association Chairman. All LFC games are shown on a big screen, it's a nice place full of reds and the singing can go quite well (for the last derby, the singing was going along with what we heard from Anfield. "We've only got ten men" springs immediately to mind). Pool on the basement. You can find a few others on the website above.
