  • it could look like a liverbird after a few pints
and we need volunteers.

its june 18th from mancland to liverpool. starts salford quays goes past ot (horrid one) and finishes in stanley park. hoping to get as many rawkites as possible to do this.

Ride Details

Start
Salford Quays, Greater Manchester. The ride is approx 46 miles (almost completely flat)

Finish
 Stanley Park, Anfield Rd, Liverpool

Distance 46 miles
Getting There
Car - nearest parking at the Lowry multi-storey, right next to the start (parking all day) NB There is a height restriction of 2.1 metres, and an all day charge.

Train - nearest station is Salford Crescent (1/2 mile), follow signs to Lowry on arrival (NB the Metro Service CANNOT take bikes)

Start Times
 7:00-9:00

Local Info.
Now in its second year, this ride starts at Salford Quays, leaving Manchester via Old Trafford and
Stretford, where it joins the Trans-Pennine trail. This mostly traffic free route, ideal for cycling, takes you along part of the Manchester Ship Canal towards Liverpool and the Mersey, which you will reach by travelling down the famous Penny Lane.

Minimum age 12, Under 16's must be accompanied by an adult.

Transport - A coach service runs once in the morning from Liverpool to Manchester and at intervals during the afternoon to take riders back to Manchester. You need to book this (see Entry
Form) - it costs £18.50 for you and your bike.

Other Info.
 Morning Transport Available
Afternoon Transport Available

MedEquip4Kids is the charity that helps children in and out of hospital.
We work in partnership with many NHS Trusts across the North West and also with the Greater Manchester Ambulance Service to improve the care available to children when they suffer illness or have been involved in accidents.
Every year thousands of babies, children and their families benefit from the paediatric specific medical equipment and enhanced hospital environments that have been funded by the charity.  Charity number 1102830

BUT we can get some forms from the hjc and get sposnsored for them. the money for the race goes to med equip so there's no need to get sposnored for them. It costs either 12.50 (individual) or 11.50 (per person in teams of six)

so far we have four people who have lost the plot agreed to do this, and no england aren't playing that day in the world cup.

so apart from blurred, sorted!, albilbol and me who else is gonna join us?

also due the lovely nature of the course we are hoping to do it in lfc tops and maybe do a banner to take with us. any thoughts? 46 miles from mediocrity to excellence is one idea so far.

Fixed my bicycle yesterday and took it for a spin afterwards. Feels great. Hadn't rode a bike since Jan but I'll get practising every night after work now.
Should get proper conditioned. Saph, as long as you don't belt it down the road and leave us behind, that should be cool. :wave
Roughly, how long would it take to cycle 46 miles to the promised land? ;) I cannot wait for this. I think the banner idea is great. :)
We'll visit the Folies Bergeres,
They like to see the Scousers there,
The women are lovely with skin like a peach,
But no one can move it like Kenny Dalglish.

this is brilliant :)

46 miles - erm...i'd be hoping for about  3 to 4 hours. i did 23 in two but that was with a few stop starts and a bit hilly. this is gonna be easier as its flatter.

It better be easy and flatter too. I don't want to think of turning around halfway down the road, although thinking that.. it's much more like half-empty half-full glass scenario.
3-4 hours shouldn't be much of a problem.
Those who don't own bikes but facny joining in, aren't there any places where you could rent one for the day. No cheap excuses are goign to work here.

I'd be interested in taking part too.  Need to get some practice runs in first though, so if Garreth fancies some company while jobbing around South Liverpool...

Will ask around my mates with bikes too.

Good man, Kev - sure we'll be able to work something out if you fancy a spin. Not around for the next few days (West Ham and then away with work and stuff) but will be about next week

No problem mate - I'll probably try and get out a couple of times this weekend. Mornings usually (as long as the night before wasn't too heavy). Will PM you some contact details.

14.16 miles in an hour's not bad at all, Saph - fairly flat round there I take it? Just been to Helly's and back this evening which is about 8 miles or so round trip. Building up slowly and steadily...

Helly almost went in to labour with the shock.  I thought the bike was just going to be the most expensive dust gathering ornament he had ever bought :P

Just thought I'd bump this in the hope of attracting some more participants.  And just to let you know how unfit Garreth and I are so that you're not put off.

Managed first training run this morning, 10.5 miles, Otterspool Prom and back, average 13.7 mph.

Now off for several pre and probably post match pints with Shaun - back to square one then  ;D

Glad you're feeling better - I've made the same mistake before myself, although not bad enough to hospitalise myself thankfully.  How far did you go then?

I managed 27.5 miles round Liverpool this afternoon, but by 20 miles my legs had gone and I was hallucinating about Mars bars...

Drank 3 pints of water and ate four fig rolls as soon as I got in, felt much better.

I'm just praying that when we do this ride there isn't a 16mph westerly wind blowing like there was today.

No probs.  Can pay straight into your account if you wish, just PM me the account details, otherwise cheque is fine too.

Five - as we know is the magic number.  Anyone else fancy looking into getting special t-shirts made up for the day.  Route map on the front, with 5 euros over Liverpool and a suitable message.  The backs being footy top style:

Roma     Wembley      Paris     Roma    Istanbul
  77            78            81        84          05

Should make for a great group shot outside the theatre of broken dreams.  ;D

I did this last year and here's some advice.  Firstly, you cannot do it on a road bike.  When you get your info pack it will explain why (there's loads of off-road and rutted surfaces so do not attempt it with a thin wheel/good bike as it will get wrecked).  Secondly, watch the scalls in Runcorn.  They were verminous last year.  Lastly, do not expect a good reception in Liverpool.  It's supposed to finish on Penny Lane but last year it finished on Otterspool Prom due to all the roadworks but it was very badly organised.  They had finishing certificates but would only let you have one once you'd raised over a certain amount for the charity and sent proof.  There were no drinks en-route but there's two or three obvious cafe/pub stops including a nice one on the banks of the ship canal near Warrington.  All in all, I found that the organisers did very very little for the money the event raised and was impressed by how unimpressed I was by the whole thing.  Oh, one more thing, there is only one big climb but it's a doozy.  It is in Allerton village which seems nowt when you are driving but believe me, it is baaaaad when you are at the end of your 40-odd mile event.

Must've been the bit of pavement just before turning off to my flat, then (or cutting the corner between Smithdown and Ullet without having to go through the poxy lights...). And yeah, I don't wear a helmet.
Cutting corner between Smithdown and Ullet, right by the Bargain Booze. Ben and I had just stopped at the lights.
