Any physios/knee injury sufferers out there - advice kneeded
« on: March 30, 2006, 07:10:35 PM »
Have a long standing knee ligament injury ( snapped medial). Same knee cartlidge op 2yrs ago. Now physio says have meniscal tear ( no scan). Taking her advice re exercises etc and improvement ( can now walk for 1hr as opposed to 10mins)...Question - would op be bad idea? is only op option removal. Physio says mucho risk of arthritis ( in me 40's like) so not good op option..
also would like to get support for knee..physio refuses to recommend ( she's nice really)..don't think I need hinge job but maybe one with reinforcement as opposed to bandage style support. Want protection to be able to hike ( I know it's sad..rather than play again etc).. any ideas..good products etc

Thanks chums

Did they say how long the tear was and where in the mensical cartilage it was?

This looks like a pretty good summary of different outcomes/treatments possible depending on the severity and location of the tear.

In my mid-30s now. Have a meniscal injury on both knees. Forget the hinge job, you're better off doing that in your 60s.

Get in the gym to strengthen the muscles that support the knee and , in my case, take glucosamine sulphate to keep the knees oiled.

You sound like you've played a bit of football.

The only encouragement I can give you is my Dad had a similar catologue of knee injuries, probably worse, and after several ops his is much much better.  It did however take a long time to heal  - nearly 3 years .  And at times we were thinking it was never going to get better.
And you should heal quicker ( he was 65 when he first did his knee )

Had an arthroscopy last year, took a long time to get over it. Thats a good call about the Glucosamine (fish cartiledge tablets do a similar job). Personally dont use strapping but each to their own.
