John Elliott and the salary cap rort are what I'm referring to.

I get that Carlton are hated by non-fans, but so are Liverpool. :p
I thought thats what you were talking about. That period is why I hate your club. Your club cheated the cap, got punished, then used the punishment to cry poor, received money from the AFL for the princess park redevelopment, all the while having many wealthy people around your club, one of which then decided to step up in Pratt. And I'd hardly call that comparable to Hicks and Gillett.

Mind you I might have that wrong?

I've always thought Liverpool was Richmond. Boss ages ago, followed by decades in the doldrums, constantly wasting recruiting opportunities, off field bit of a mess, multiple false dawns, cracking song, and passionate fans.
I thought Richmond, or maybe Melbourne (not sure about that one though).

Ratten did make some horrible tactical blunders tonight - I don't often agree with the 7mate commentators but they were right that moving Henderson into defense after Petrie's early hatful was a dreadful move. Henderson was the only player capable of taking a mark in our forward 50 and is a good set shot, while Jamison was  not exactly being dominated by Petrie, he was just making some bad errors that Petrie was ruthlessly exploiting with good mid-range set shooting. Once Henderson went into defense, our attack became the same confused mess it has been for the last two months. Playing Duigan up forward again was a facepalmer from the moment I saw him head that way... it may work once as a surprise tactic, but he's not just going to become a gun forward for us. He was useless tonight.

Maybe Ratten is just panicking a bit now because of Kernahan's public vote of no confidence, but he has done a very good job to this point. On the other hand, you can't help feeling the rot has set in and maybe we need an experienced , proven hand like Malthouse to settle the sh... OMG LIVERPOOL PARALLEL ALERT... though obviously Mick knows how to win shit other than the Swedish second division in the 1970s.

I'll admit I was living overseas while the whole saga played out so I didn't really have a solid grasp of what was going on. I do recall other clubs (Essendon?) having breached the caps in years prior and getting away with a fine, so the Carlton punishment seemed extremely severe, but I have to trust that the circumstances were worse. The period that followed was obviously an embarrassing and traumatic one for a proud club, setting new records for losing margins & goals conceded every week. The subsequent rebuilding from the ashes - to my mind due to patient and astute rebuilding through the draft (unlike Melbourne, who are a case study in how to waste #1 picks) - was a really enjoyable time, as we'd effectively been purged and could enjoy the simple pleasures of football again. This year has been the first where we've had real lofty expectations as fans, and now all the hurt and disappointment is coming to the fore.

Bitch of a fucking game...

I thought the way your club acted was first a slap in the face to the game, trying to cheat the cap, then a slap in the face to clubs that actually struggle to find the dollars, like my own. For this reason I struggle to compare you to my beloved Liverpool.

Got to say too mate, although you've done better with picks than Melbourne, your best player by a far far margin was not produced by your club.  ;D

RIP AFL.

Umpires have ruined our once great game. Defo fucking the game off, might come back in 4-5 years and see if the umpiring has improved, highly unlikely though. A sad sad day for footy.

Oh do settle down, kids. Okay, Carlton is Everton then... blue, used to be good in the eighties, delusional, always the victim of bad umpiring?

Happy now, you utter bitches?

Yeah, you guys are mean.

I've settled down now and would like to apologise for offending people with comparing our universally beloved Liverpool to the mostly-despised-in-these-parts Carlton. I guess what I really mean is that the experience of supporting the two clubs this year has been near-identical... i.e. utterly depressing and soul-destroying. On that we can surely all agree. Thank fuck there is no Ashes series this year.

Would of been closer if they didn't kick so straight.

Prediction is still right.  ;)

They kicked so straight because so many of their goals were set shots from < 30m. Generally down to aerial superiority, more direct and assertive lines of attack, and appalling discipline from the defence.

Funnily enough, I was looking at the ladder midweek and realised we were something like 6th best in the league in points against, and 12th in attack. It's usually been the polar opposite in the past few years, but with the loss of several key position players (and chronic lack of depth in those areas) I guess we had to go scrappy. Obviously the games against North Melbourne and before them Hawthorn have fucked our average, Tony, but we've kept most others to around 10-12 goals a game.

Jamison has been shocking recently; he used to be such a reliable kick but he's scruffing them all over the place now. Guess it's a confidence thing... look at Murphy's stupdendously bad set shooting last night, and Jeff Garlett's sudden inability to catch a cold. It's time the selection panel grew a pair and put some of these players in the VFL to regain confidence. There are several serviceable players who haven't had a sniff lately, like Jordan Russell and Bret Thornton; surely they can have a run out while Garlett and co. rediscover some form?

Scrappy but I'll take it. Great to see Walters back and that is why we have been screaming for him for the last few weeks. Pav is a star. Channel 7 commentators are a joke. I do feel we were lucky Melbourne were down a couple of players but even still I think we would have run over the top of them. The problem in the 1st half was poor skills. Once we turned that around in the second half we belted them.

Umpiring was poor today for both sides. I do feel like we got the rub of the green a bit more than Melbourne though.

Holy moly, Karmichael Hunt kicks a goal after the siren to win the game for Gold Coast. Must admit I was out of my seat in the last 30 seconds there, what a finish.

Will Richmond finish 9th once again?
Will Geelong clutch onto that 8th spot?

Geelong won't finish in the 8. They have too many games against teams above them and they just aren't that good.

Wow... just watched the last quarter of Richmond-GCS. Didn't know that Richmond had been 10 points up with 26 seconds to go. Just chipping it around, playing out the clock... no one seems interested any more... then that guy spills a simple bucket-handed mark about 70 metres out and the Suns swoop... then the Tigers leave two wingers unmarked at the centre bounce... a great piece of vision from Matera...

If I was a Richmond fan I would be beside myself with rage if I weren't so consumed with shock and disbelief. I agree now that Liverpool are Richmond... that was QPR all over again.

Another 100+ point hiding for GWS. Up next for them is us. I hope Ross goes all out attack and not this defensive crap. Our percentage is atrocious and it needs a massive boost.

Injuries and suspensions for the Eagles aside, Sydney played like a well oiled machine. They were fantastic.

Sounds like Port gave us a pretty solid game up to 3/4 time. Good to get a win and keep in touch with the top 4, still think we'll probably end up somewhere between 5-8 but if we get to the finals we'll have as much chance as anyone!

Hawks vs Pies.
Hawks vs Cats. (We beat these, and we'll be able to beat anyone. Some sort of voodoo crap makes us stop playing in the 4th quarter against them and end up losing, frustrating for the fans.)
Hawks vs Bombers.

Make or break time for the top four.
