Boxing - Calzaghe v Lacey
« on: March 4, 2006, 09:30:26 PM »
The long awaited fight between these two is FINALLY going ahead! I for one cannot wait! Going to tip Calzaghe to win this one, should be a great fight!

Anyone else watching this? ITV have it billed as a 11.10pm - 3am so it's going to be a late one!

Not really a boxing fan so don't really know much info about the fight or the ins and outs of whats gone on but I do love a good fight on the tele, and this one is promising!
I don't fear your lot at all.

Don't worry about the things you can't control, worry about the things you can control! Your destiny is in your own hands, no one else!

I Hope Lacy knocks Calzaghes head off. Longest reigning champ and this is the first credible opponent hes faced. Come on Lacy twat him!

Calzaghe will have to box to keep Lacy away, dont think he'll come out on top in a brawl. Lacy has power that could knock a wall down, and a granite chin. It should be a good fight tho

Ill be watching. Not got a clue whos going to win, should be pretty even. Cant wait for this though should be a great fight(hopefully)
So we finish the eighteenth and he's gonna stiff me. And I say, "Hey, Lama, hey, how about a little something, you know, for the effort, you know." And he says, "Oh, uh, there won't be any money, but when you die, on your deathbed, you will receive total consciousness." So I got that goin' for me, which is nice.

Calzaghes wasted enough years, if he goes for a fight then im giving it to Lacy but I reckon he'll be more in few shots then out and move.

Nah im still not a Calzaghe fan, however ill take my hat off to him for proving me and many many others wrong. He completley thrashed this guy, hammered him from start to finish and fought the perfect fight. All credit to him. Lacy didnt know what to do and he looked terrible. Dont think he landed a decent shot all night. Great performance from Joe. Deserves all the credit in the world for that performance.

It was the first really dangerous opponent hes fought all his career though, he should do whatever it takes to get Tarver into the ring next while he has won over some of his previous critics. Lacy i think will be finished now, he wont come back from that. Maybe he was just too over hyped? Regardless though Calzaghe hammered him. We knew if he boxed Lacy, Lacy would have trouble getting to him, he fought the perfect fight. I Enjoyed watching it.

Hope Lacy is ok as well.

It was a very close fight, Lacy did enough to clinch it and I'm surprised the American judges saw fit to give the fight to Calzaghe, seeing as Lacy is American. I thought it was unpatriotic. I scored the fight 113.25 113 to Lacy.

(slaps face repeatedly) Shysa! Was having a dream I was an American boxing fan.....

I've never been a fan of Joe Calzaghe and have suggested on several occasions that he's overrated but he proved me wrong earlier this morning. Lacy didn't win a round and the only round Calzaghe didn't win was the one where he got a docked a point. Some big fights and some big pay days await Joe Calzaghe if he wants them.

What a fight! Get in there Joe!

An absolute boxing masterclass from Calzaghe, can't believe how easy that was for him compared to all the pre fight talk from Lacey. Joe was just too quick for him, simple as, he boxed him to death and the fight really should have been stopped in the 9th when he was pummelling Lacey in the corner!

Bring on the bigger fights for Joe now, he deserves them, it's the best fight I've ever seen!

Very good fight from Calzaghe, he taught Lacey a lesson - just too quick and mobile for him.

Delighted for him. Get in there. One of the best boxing matches ive seen in ages. He gave Lacy a hiding.

How the fuck that fight lasted 12 rounds, I'll never know.  Lacy's corner should have stopped it in the 10th or 11th, he was just being battered.

Brilliant stuff by Joe though, world class performance.

It was a class fight well worth staying awake for. Lacy has some fuckin balls staying up throughout that fight, he only fell once after all them hits he took. Big Joe with another good performence.

That Calzaghe was superb and I think that performance underlines why no c*nt will fight him.Lacy only took the fight 'cos they thought he was on the wane after 2 years without a decent opponent.

Im starting to think ive had Calzaghe all wrong over the last few years. The talk of opponents ducking him, the unwillingness to fight outside the UK, i think he has only once in Denmark on the Tyson v Nielsen undercard against Tocker Pudwell. Thats the only time I can remember like. I thought he was a protected fighter kept away from anyone who could do him damage. A couple of my mates think hes the dogs bollocks tho, and they've argued the toss with me about it for years.

I can believe that Bernard Hopkins, Roy Jones jr and countless others wouldnt want to fight him now after his performance last night. Id well believe they ducked him. On that form id have Calzaghe beating anyone from 160lbs to 175lbs. He totally proved me wrong last night and after talking to my mates and me Da today, im pleased he did. When I think of Calzaghe fights, I think about the bore fest against Starie, the poor showing against Robin Reid, but last night you couldnt fault him. Even though I wanted Lacy to win last night ( I had a tenner on him with my two Calzaghe supporting mates ;D) im pleased now that Britain has two legitimate undisputed champs in Hatton and Joe.

I just hope now he goes over to America, takes a couple of big fights for big money and wins them. Talk of Joe C vs Roy Jones? A few years ago that would of been a hell of a fight, but im not so sure about now. Jones is apparently finished, so id like to see Joe take on Tarver and someone else, dont know who like. Maybe Clinton Woods? Id pay to see that.

As the Hives would say "I hate to say I told you so......"  Always been a massive fan of Calzaghe, thought he was immensley unlucky to come along just after the likes of Michael Watson, Nigel Benn, Chris Eubank and Steve Collins had reached the end of their careers.

Joe has always been a strong fighter with a rock solid jaw and devestating punching power, it's just sad that he hasn't been given the opportunity woith that "defining fight".  He's convincingly put everyone away so far but there was always a niggle in the back of some people's minds as he hadn't fought true quality.

Mirra (and others) had me doubting Calzaghe's convictions earlier on last year when Joe (yet again) broke his hand in a bout which menat that his 'defining fight' would have to postponed.  Many suggested that Joe was 'ducking' thes big fights as he wasn't really that good a boxer.

Well, I'm pleased to say that the Welsh Italian from Newbridge has manged to prove the doubters wrong.  Joe is world class and will no doubt go on now to prove his ability.  It's just a massive shame that he didn't get this fight sooner in his career as it would have been much easier for him to possibly attempt to unify the division as a 27 year old than it is at 34.

Well done Joe, we are all very proud of you!

Scroll down, they have the ITV and Showtime (yank) versions, haven't watched the Showtime version yet but am looking forward to hearing how the yankies felt about their Golden Boy. Every man and his dog had Lacy to win by KO. OWNED!

Anyone have the punch stats for this fight? I can't find them anywhere.
To many people have discovered "Football Manager" and now they all think they are Kenny but alas so many end up as Roy
