UPDATE......yes, you read that correct, 53 POINTS!  Thats 1 point less than the 54 we have now, and thats also the last time we won the league (for all our younger supporters it was known as the First Division....its the year ManUre nearly sacked Fergie, now if only...........).

We should realise how well we are doing this season........, even though at times our forwards are not firing on all cylinders, bit more luck and we would have scored 5 today.

But anyhow, we are still getting superb results on average...

On a 1989/90 note, I thought it would be a good idea to remind you all that I have a massive collection now of Liverpool dvds, mostly rare full games, (about 600 in collection), which includes a lot of 1987-1990 games (full 90 minutes) of our magnificent Barnes and Beardsley era, anyone who would like a list of them please message me on here. Most of the rare stuff have been taken from VHS video recording during out glory years and tranferred to dvd.

This LFC DVD collection also includes EVERY ONE OF our Champions League matches from last season, including the qualifiers against AZ Graz (0-2 and 0-1, 2-1 LFC on agg...), all full 90 minutes exceot the Chelsea home semi where obviously the London pretenders had 96 minutes to score a goal................muahahhaha.

Fuck me.  In a pre-abramohvich era we would be right in the mix.  Very good point and well made.  Talk of Barnes and Beardsley makes me drool to imagine those two fitting into a Rafaesque system. :P

Good shout......but it shows what a difference the gulf is now bettween the have and has nots.  More points at the top, and less points at the bottom......Still after watching the game and the way we dominated them, I am very happy.

Why are you banging your head? What difference does it make to his point. Chelsea have the money and no one in the world can compete with that.

and after tonights game I would say its getting more obvious game by game that a lot of our build up play is very unskilled, we have no-one with the basic park skill of being able to cross the ball, the only player who did on one occasion was Fowler!

Must have watched a different game - Riise and Gerrard put a couple of belting crosses in last night.

In fact, contrary to popular opinion, I'd argue that one of the signposts of our evolution under Rafa is the overall increase in the number quality balls into the box from wide areas.  It's an area that can always be improved, of course - but not an area that I would flag up as the huge problem that some seem to make out.

Good call on Fowler's crossing though.  He put in a cracker on Saturday too.  I can see why Rafa likes playing him and Moro together.  Whilst lacking basic pace, they're already making clear-cut chances for each other relatively consistently.

It was at that point that Alan Hansen famously came into Dalglish's office, and said "this is the worst team I've ever played in"

Kenny put himself back in the team for the next game, (after having only made one appearance so far that season) stayed there for the rest of the season, and the reds won 12 and drew 1 of the last 13 games.

If only we had a Dalglish to put into the side now...

A good point.

Looking at the winning totals in the Premiership years, sometimes it's been 90+, other times (1997 I think) it's been as low as 75 points.

It would be interesting to see how things would be if Abramovich never arrived, and Chelsea remained also-rans spiralling into massive debt (the debt was £80m in 2003). But I can't help thinking his arrival hastened the decline of Arsenal, who seem to have fallen apart in the face of Chelsea's might. If Chelsea hadn't grown stronger, Arsenal's confidence might not have crumbled. Who knows?

48 points from 26 games shows Rafa is doing a good job. Had he £300m to spend and were Chelsea still broke, it's highly likely we'd be walking the league too.

We can all dream, we can say oh but what if Arsenal hadn't had that amazing season and GH had overtaken them, but we have to deal with the reality and I'm sure Rafa agrees with that too. Chelsea are living in a world completely devoid of financial reality. I don't look at Chelsea, I look at the fact we are still 3 points behind a Manc side that probably ranks as there worst for the past 5 or so years, a midfield that simply struggles to compete against the top quality sides.

And I look at the fact that Rafa has only been in charge for a year and a half and that we are a WORK IN PROGRESS (fuckin sick of sayin that). Also, I like to look at the fact that we've made it to two finals in that year and a half, losing one to the multi billionaires and winning the other, which happens to be the most prestigious club cup in the world.

Seems a lot of "What if's" here,.....If my grannie had balls she would have been my Granda,   thing is they ARE multi billionaires and they are ahead of us in the league by a huge points margin,

we are improving and will continue to do so when the strikers get their head out their arse and put a few of the chances away.

The title is in our sights and we have to try harder than ever to acheive it and the fact that it will be beating the Chelsea DESPITE Their millions will make it more the sweeter!

Indeed, although this certainly didn't happen in 1989-90. 1985/86 seems closest, although he'd made plenty of appearances before the run-in anyway and was only really an ever-present in the final eight or nine games.

How many games was it in the 89/90 season overall?

Just saying that with more teams wouldn't you have more 'easier' games- just trying to play Devil's advocate here!

Why are you banging your head? What difference does it make to his point. Chelsea have the money and no one in the world can compete with that.

Its not just Chelsea, in fact they aren't dominating as much as are  Juventus and  Bayern Munich in their respective leagues. The new order will see the spoils increasingly divided by an elite few.

I used to think an average of 2 points a game will win most leagues,
and it's still true in most divisions. In League One and Two not one team
is averaging 2 points.

Liverpool are 51 from 26 (almost 2) - the best we've done for years.

Take Chelsea out of the equation, and nothing's changed.
