Good interview with John Wark.
« on: February 9, 2006, 11:03:04 AM »
Here's a good interview we did with John Wark, who once scored 27 goals in one season as a midfield player in 1984-85.

Thanks, really enjoyed that.

ou’ve got to do the business, if you don’t you could be left out. It was big pressure. There were 9 internationals on the bench or in the reserves. You’ve got to do it every week.

And there in lies the difference with our recent teams. A few players that are not capable of playing to the level required and also too many players on any given day not playing near enough to their full potential. You can have the best manager in football, but its down to the players to perform.

Furthermore Mølby points out: There are only three midfeld players who have scored twenty goals for Liverpool in one season in the last 20+ years… [We checked this on LFChistory.net and he proved to be right. Incidentally Mølby is one, the third one being McDermott.]

The facts:
1980-81 Terry McDermott 22 goals
1981-82 Terry McDermott 20 goals
1984-85 John Wark 27 goals
1985-86 Jan Mølby 21 goals

http://www.lfchistory.net/redcorner_articles_view.asp?article_id=973

There is a very good chance of Stevie G joining that list this season.

Good read that. ;)

Excellent player. Centre mid. Good engine, team player, right attitude.Fiery, aggressive, never say die ,good in the tackle. Decent enough on the ball without a great deal of skill or class ( compared to terry or ronnie say). Brilliant at getting in late or unmarked, good in the air, goalscoring knack. liked him a lot and never a poser.
oh, he was fucking ugly.

He was virtually a striker one season! Still brilliant achievement either way tho

I read in Mølby’s autobiography that you broke Mølby’s leg in training in the 1987-88 preseason. Clearly no accident….

Wark: Guilty! Because I wasn’t in the team…

Mølby: We haven’t spoken since. This is the first time..

Ironically, I think Wark moved back to Ipswich in the same season. Think his goal ratio must have been under 1 in 3 in something like 100 games. Not bad.

He was one of my favourite players as a kid.  Used to model some of my game on him (and Kenny/Rushie).  Was especially good at arriving late for corners and scoring belter headers from them.

Oh, and I think he was also in the Great Escape!

You're thinking of Escape to Victory.

And he was. Played in the same side as Pele, Bobby Moore, Ossie Ardiles, Russell Osman, Sylvester Stallone and Michael Caine :D

He wasn't very good at Liverpool. He was great at scoring goals but that was it. He might have been a bit better earlier in his career but he wasn't good enough for us by the time he arrived (which seems a bit daft seeing as he scored 27 goals). We were appalling in 1984/5 which wasn't easy to stomach at the time. He soon got the bullet which says it all.

Great interview that, very well done.
Cheers Skeever.

p.s. is that Lawro in the background when Walk is tackling John Barnes?
Maybe it's because he's out of focus but he looks as lanky as Crouch!

Yep, agree with that.

Scored a lot of goals but wasnt good enough to play in central midfield.  Basically we lost Souness the previous season for Sampdoria and had to buy no fewer than 4 players to replace him:
Wark : who scored goals from midfield like Souness could
MacDonal: who covered ground like Souness did
McMahon: who tackled like Souness did (but arrived the following season)
Molby: who passed like Souness did

Unfortunately as there are only 11 on a pitch only 1 (or 2) of them could play at any one time, so we never really replaced Souness.

I always felt that Wark was most effective in Europe where for some reason continental teams could never cope with his ghosting runs from midfield and he scored tons of goals for us in Europe. He did hte same for Ipswich previously. In the league he just want good enough; or rather was good enough to get into most post-1984 Liverpool midfields, but looked so much worse than the player he ostensibly replaced, Souness.

Good squad player, who gave his all. Wasn't in the Souness league, but better than given credit by some.

And in a different league than Kevin McDonald i.m.o. Comparing him to the one made entirely of chocolate is a little unfair. Maybe I've got a rose tinted view of him but I think his contribution is a little underestimated as he was overall as a player. Don't think our fans are guilty of this but I remember a fellow player for Scotland saying he would have a much higher rating amongst some if he looked better and "sold" himself more. I liked him.

I thought he was a good player. Wasn't the best player we had at the time but he was effective.
84/85 season wasn't as bad as some make out. (Of course at the time finishing 2nd was totally unacceptable) We started off shite and considering we lost our best ever captain the season before and never replaced him, we did well finishing second, and under different circumstances would have been european champions.

And don't forget Souness and Wark played the last 10 or so league games together in our first treble season (83/84).
