Help needed with displaying images in Firefox/ IE
« on: January 18, 2006, 08:32:29 PM »
Hi there,

I am writing in need of some advice with my web browser. I am having a problem displaying some images in firefox and IE, most images load fine but some will only load in my AOL explorer browser.

An example of this is from the following webpage;

http://www.stratosgroup.com/guides/html/200401ppst/?cat=90fcb

I don't get any of the images on this page (bar the google adverts) unless I use AOL. I have been through all of the options from the tool menu and ensured that the 'display images' box is ticked but alas no joy.

I hope somebody can point me in the right direction as I have been very happy with my firefox browser, it has been a breath of fresh air up until now.

Cheers guys  :wave

Its not your browser. The images are all broken links. Dont know how you are geting them in another browser? Doesnt work for me in either IE or FF. I dont have any firewall on this machine either, so nothing inbetween to cause a problem

Weird!

Version of FF would be useful too. And the source of the page (Ctrl + U brings it up)

I can see them too.
When your Mum used to pick you up from school and you'd run out and be like 'Mummy I got 9/10 in the spelling test today', would she go 'phenomenal, son'.

Cos if she did she's a stupid fuck.

Are any of you using FF 1.06? Its what I am using and only get messages saying the image does not exist.

Below is the URL obtained from the "Image Location" option from FF.

http://www.stratosgroup.com/guides/html/200401ppst/prince.gif

and then inside image tags

Can you see the image in my post? Doesnt show for me.

Maybe your hosts file, maybe your cache is full.

Cant be the hosts file. Theres nothing in there, so the resolver on my machine will head straight off to the DNS if required. Besides, the image is coming from the same host as that serving up the HTML.

Tried the cache thang just out of curiosity, but made no difference.

No common theme in browser. Some people have it working in the same as others have it failing. Might just be a fuck up on the webserver itself. They're not infalible!

Gonna try it with wget when I get back into work tomorrow. Determined to find out the cause ;D

It's quite simple, you aren't sending your HTTP_REFERER and the site has hotlinking blocked, it can't dtermine that you are making a request from that site so no images.

Not using norton personal internet fucker upper are you, which for some reaon thinks that disabling HTTP_REFERER is a good idea ::).

Possibly a plugin disabling the referer then, certainly the web developer toolbar has an option to disable it, thats how I tested it.

Got mine sorted by one of the boffins at work. I have no idea of what he actually did in technical terms as he wouldn't explain it to me in simple terms. He seemed to type something into the address bar which brought him to a series of 'secret' firefox options then he changed a value concerning hotlinking from 2 to 0.

I wish I could be of more help but he’s the kind of guy who likes the feeling of knowing something you don’t so he won’t explain fully. It’s working now so I can stick with firefox and ditch the aol browser.

Cheers guys

http://tools.blueyonder.co.uk/cgi-bin/env.cgi - is the referer listed, you must have installed an extension that turned it off.

Is there any chance you guys could help me out with something?

I'm trying to view www.trainline.com using FF (v1.5) but I can't see everything I should be seeing on the page. I get a "your browser doesn't support this content." I have tried to view it using IE and Netscape but that doesn't work. I've tried uninstalling FF and then reinstalling it but that didn't work either. Also, the sites uses flash which I have installed. Here's the page I get:

JFT96.

works fine for me, i see the content and I'm using FF 1.5, it also loaded the content when an extension I use was blocking all scripts.

Gawd knows what's wrong with it.
