Icons of Liverpool FC - you decide
« on: January 13, 2006, 12:36:12 PM »
As the nation goes 'icon' crazy, we want to know who or what you consider to be the most defining symbol of Liverpool Football Club.
With the Government encouraging the English public to debate what cultural icons best represent our national heritage we've added a more distinct Liverpool-related slant to proceedings.

Forget Stonehenge, Shakespeare and cups of tea, think more Anfield, Shankly and the European Cup!

This country's most successful club is famed throughout the world but what one symbol do you most readily associate with it?

In no particular order we have nominated the following to kick-start the LFC icon debate...

The Liver Bird

Anfield

You'll Never Walk Alone

The Kop

Stevie G

Bill Shankly

The European Cup

Rafael Benitez

The old League Championship trophy

All-red kit

Kenny Dalglish

Bob Paisley

Hillsborough Memorial

Billy Liddell

Shankly Gates

Wide enough choice to make a choice

THE FANS (general) should probably have replaced the kop (who were formerly known as gobshites by some element) or are you suggesting the structure ?

Wasn't it Bill who said it's the fans who make the club what it is ?

Technically yes, but I think of it as an icon of the club myself.

Surely its the LIVERBIRD

all due respect, but the question is "the most defining symbol of Liverpool Football Club"

most fans in ENGLAND wouldn't even recognise the symbol itself, never mind see it as a defining symbol of the club.

Worldwide, no question, THE defining symbol of the club is the all red kit. IT is what the world "sees" when it thinks of liverppool fc.

That said I probably agree, was just chucking it in for consideration. As in "feel free to add any others... "

Know what you mean - I kind of think of it as "If you went to anyone in the world and do a simple drawing defining liverpool  football club" what would you get?

In my mind, unquestionably, most would draw a team in all red...

Having sat here considering this for a bit, I can only come to one conclusion - there is no "iconic" image of LFC.

You can't posibly represent a feeling - the love, the passion - in an image, object or individual, and even if you could come close they (it) would not be "it" but merely stimulate the feelings from within.

The things listed each form a small part of who we are - none define us as such, but each forms a small part of a far greater definition.

Take the whole of who we are, who we have been and who we will be and then you have a true icon - Liverpool FC.

In my mind, unquestionably, most would draw a team in all red...

Just as easy to draw/write "This Is Anfield". In my mind "Anfield" is the defining symbol of LFC. Followed by "the Kop", "Reds", "YNWA", "Liverbird", "Hillsborough", "European Cup". Individual people as symbolic legends are important to the club and fans, but not on a universal level as the ones I mention.

Went to Kenya for honeymoon safari in November.

Utterly fantastic locals everywhere we met.  All loved English football, many of them Reds!

First question most of them asked when they found out we were British was: "Who is your team?".  And about nine out of ten would immediately respond the same way...

"Liverpool!! Ah!  'You'll Never Walk Alone!' "

For me, therein lies the answer.

But as soon as people see the Liverbird, they know its Liverpool FC mate.

Where as, how many teams play in red?

Sounds obvious, but only to people who know what it is in detail.

For example, the real madrid kit, the brazil kit, even the mauve anderlecht kit, and the green st ettienne kit are all very recognisable...

but would you recognise any of them from a small element of their badge - indeed, from their whole badge?

I've sent you an email, just for  fun - give it a go!

I'd go for the little stuff that only we really know about:

Shankly picking the scarf out of the dirt
Bob Paisley's cardigan
"Our bread and butter"
The little windows at the back of the old Spion Kop
McMahon hunting that ball down against Arsenal and continuing the move that led to the Aldridge goal (skill, pace, tenacity, a sense that Liverpool attacking the Kop never give in)
Clapping opposition goalies
The boot room
Rafa making tactical changes while the rest of the stadium celebrates a goal

These things are Liverpool even though the rest of the world doesn't necessarily know about them.

All are huge icons of Liverpool Football Club but for me YNWA stands out above the rest.

In my match-going time over the past 18 years, this is the one thing that can sum up my emotions through the dark, tragic lows and the ecstatic highs.  Before every match it still makes my hairs on the back of my neck stand up and as has already been mentioned is associated with our club all over the world.

I know there are threads elsewhere about this song so I won't go on too much but in some ways the togetherness and pride in our team that this song shows displays everything that makes our club stand out above the rest.

Beat me to it. Ive travelled pretty far and wide, and whilst i agree that people know of liverpool as playing in red, lots of teams do, but equal to that is the people the world over adore YNWA, and associate it with LFC.
For me the answer is YNWA.

Of Course, say "You'll Never Walk Alone" to somebody and they may not necessarily say "Ah Liverpool!" (Well they probably would but I'm trying to stretch a point here ;) )

The icon for me would be the THIS IS ANFIELD sign or the Liverbird

You'll Never Walk Alone is my vote.

Maybe we should make an icon of the letters YNWA?

Something like:

Y
 N
  W
    A

or

  Y
 NW
   A

I'm sure someone with photoshop and some talent could probably do a cool icon of the letters.

Living in Germany, everytime the German commentators speak of LFC they speak of "The Reds", no other club is called that by them over here, not even Bayern Munich, who play in red. So the all red strip, along with YNWA and the golden Liverbird, would be my choice.

People might not agree, but i love LFC, I have LFC running in my blood, and Jamie is my favorite player, but Jamie, along with Rafa and Stevie are not ready to be compared with Keegan, Dalglish, Shankly and Paisley.,

I admit that they are future icons, and one day we will speak of them the same way, but at the moment they still have a lot to achieve, after all its only these 2 seasons we have been picking up :)

For me it would be a toss up between "You'll Never Walk Alone" and "This Is Anfield". Suprised nobody has mentioned Robbie Fowler yet, given that a fair proportion of posters on here still think he should be playing for the club.

To me it must be "You'll Never Walk Alone". Although Celtic sings that song too but worldwide it is known as the 'Liverpool anthem'. That with the Liverbird, together - very rarely mistaken.
