;D Holy shit, what a miserable, joyless thread! It's just going against the principles of the club, what on earth is the big deal? Sad.

Is that principle 73c? Thou shall never have a man dressed in a foam outfit to entertain kids.

Let's be honest, all the things you mentioned have a direct effect on fans, by either having to listen to some music, have foam hands waived in their face, or be told to be quiet. A mascot being in the family fan park or attending a school isn't taking anything away from YOUR enjoyment of the match, and it isn't effecting how it's been done for the last 50 years. He isn't running up and down the touch line, he isn't celebrating when we score a goal, he isn't walking up and down the stairs of the Kop high fiving everyone as he goes.

The most impact he had on anyone is running to have his picture taken before kick off with the kid mascots and straight back off again - what principle is that against exactly?

Haha, I was basically just showing him that you could dress up any negative in his sentence structure.

The last one was deliberately excessive so as to demonstrate said point.

It isn't really a negative though, which was his point I think, so he wasn't trying to dress it up.

I don't have a problem with our mascot, I actually think it's a plus when clubs have them. Now to be fair, I'm American and have lived here my entire life and just about all of our major sports teams have mascots. It's just the norm here. Personally I loved getting my picture taken with a giant Moose at a baseball game  :P

Getting your picture taken with a giant Moose...brings back the nightmares.

It's just a little ridiculous if that's the level we're at for being annoyed these days. I'd actually understand if in any way, shape or form he was effecting your/anyone's enjoyment of the match, I'm just not sure how it's currently doing that by being on the pitch for 30 seconds for a picture.

I mean if that's the level then we should really be up in arms for them selling hot dogs, never had those back in the day. Players names on the back of shirts, fuck right off. Popular music at half time, not for me. I mean none of those will have any effect or change on how you've watched the game for the last 30+ years but still, let's get all ridiculously annoyed about them.

Why don't we go the whole hog then and put scarves on all of the seats? That would help lift the atmosphere too, eh?

It WAS embarrassing last sunday. I think the only way it didn't get a bigger response from the crowd was down to the fact that it took most of the crowd by surprise. Let's hope that it was the last time it was allowed into the ground.

I don't know if annoyed is the right word. I think 'saddened' is a better summation of how I feel about it.

You might already know from my post in the atmosphere thread that I find aspects at Anfield a bit depressing these days. There is so much that is declining about the wonderful Anfield culture and it's strange when I look around the stands and see a completely unrecognisable type of fan, one that can be summed up with terms like 'customer'.

We've done just fine without a giant foam Liverbird for 100+ years so why now? It's representative of a whole host of culture shifts.

If these things don't matter, then why did Brendan put the old 'This Is Anfield' sign back in the tunnel? Why did he bring back the red nets?

This club has a fantastic identity, and so whilst giant foam birds are a small issue, and obvious are fine to you, it's still indicative of a dwindling Anfield culture that we should be protecting.

Foam Birds, Inflatables on the Kop, Standard Chartered scarfs, Yolo fucking Tore shirts, Selfie Sticks, people telling singing fans to 'be quiet', people asking our great flag lads to 'stop because they can't see the pitch' 10 mins before kick off. -- Read that and try and work out what the fuck is happening to the Kop, because I think it's bloody sad.

The point I was trying to make is that it does go against the "principles" of what Liverpool is about. Calling people idiots is not exactly constructive, is it?

What are your thoughts on George's approach to naming the teams as opposed to Peter McDowells?

For what its worth I dislike McDowells style. So I'm doubly cursed.

I think the issue is less that he/she popped on and off quickly for a couple of photos, and more that we were told initially he'd be nowhere near the pitch and now they are subversively introducing him. It's fair enough to be concerned that he's gonna be running up and down the touchline next season high-fiving Brendan.

No no, being as annoyed as some are acting in here due to it coming on the pitch for a photo is a little idiotic (differing opinion or not!!).

I agree with most of that for what it's worth - I just don't put that thing coming on the pitch as having any effect on what makes and has made Anfield special. If it starts doing some of the shite some mascots do then yeah, definitely worth getting annoyed about.

It isn't doing that though it is? It's literally coming on for a picture and going right back off again - not even a wave to the crowd from what I saw. It was always said it was there for the kids, and the picture with the mascot is still exactly that.

As mentioned previously in here, if people are this annoyed at him being in that pic then I'd hate to see the riots that will happen should he give a little wave next time. There will be over turned cars on fire in the streets around Anfield.

Really didn't like seeing him out on the pitch before the game, I thought this kind of shit wouldn't happen.

It's not the end of the world, but it's just another way the club loses a bit of it's soul.

Hilarious few minutes on citytalk about it. Maybe in time we will all just take it as regular furniture but at the moment, it's too cringe.

Sometimes we all take the football stuff a little too seriously but there is a line when it comes to being lighthearted about the club and it's "entertainment" activities.

'He' is a 'she', for starters :D

I grew up on the Kop and didn't need the likes of Mighty Red myself, but I get that times move on, it's just another way to engage with the little ones.

It may be an indication of sport becoming more commercialised, but that's hardly a shock. In some ways it is sad but what do you do? Stick Mighty Red's head atop the Shankly gates as a warning to others?

I do understand the wider point some are making, but I personally can't find the energy to be arsed about a mascot for little children... so what? I don't think it's a big deal, or even vaguely important. How is a quick appearance by a daft looking bird mascot of any significance?

If it hovers around the dugout/selects goal music *cringe*/sits on Brendan's knee/starts picking the squad I will happily join the outrage. :o

Don't look at this then.

Why the fuck would any club think that including the mascot in a minute's silence was a good idea.

One obvious plus to might red, if the club doesn't manage to move on borini or assaidi in this transfer window then they can take it in turns to wear the costume to give them some variety from just sitting in the stands.

People are blowing this massively out of proportion. Clubs have had mascots for ages, it just happens - it gets the kids involved and it's anything but obtrusive. If he gets in the minutes silence or something, yeah, rage, until then - simmer down.
