Sports Direct Arena returns to St James Park
« on: October 10, 2012, 12:27:25 am »
All due to the sponsorship with Wonga, I suppose they worked out that welcome to the "Wonga Stadium" would be unpopular no?

It was never and never will be anything other than ST JAMES' PARK to me and everyone I know.

I'm not too happy having those Highway Robbing Bastards Wonga sponsor Newcastle but there's nowt I can do about it other than refuse to buy any merchandise with their logo on it.

Fuck Wonga and fuck that fat twat Mike Ashley    :P

5000% interest or whatever it is to desperate people who really need the money and yet this company sponsors Newcastle and a couple mor football teams.

Just shows there is no ethics when in comes to football.
Well done Ashley.. enjoy the money you get that is extorted from desperate people.

Makes me sick to be honest.

Clever from Wonga - they no doubt expect some positive PR out of this "giving the stadium back to the fans" move, and clever Ashley for actually negotiating a sponsorship deal where he gets extra income for stadium naming rights and ends up with a stadium that has the old name.

Everyone's a winner as they say.

They're really getting into football aren't they? First Blackpool, then Hearts. Now Newcastle. And the same company hvae just announced they've bought the naming rights for the Arsenal manager.

That isn't what happened, to be clear.  Up until this weekend, the deal didn't include anything to do with stadium naming rights.  Because of the backlash, it was added at the last minute, but on the condition that the name was St James Park.  Wonga didn't pay anything for that change - it was included to give them security against Newcastle selling the naming rights to someone else (other than sportsdirect).  The PR benefit is definitely why it was done, but there was nothing about it that generated more money for Ashley.

It'll always remain the Sports direct arena to me.  All this name changing malarkey to St.James part etc will not have me fooled.
Quote from: Dion Fanning

The chants for Kenny Dalglish that were heard again on Wednesday do not necessarily mean that the fans see him as the saviour. This is not Newcastle, longing for the return of Kevin Keegan. Simply, Dalglish represents everything Hodgson is not and, in fairness, everything Hodgson could or would not hope to be.

Yeah 11 months of history gone, just like that.

Why no fuss over Blackpool wearing this Wonga logo. Does anything go on the golden mile?

Over the top reaction as expected regarding Wonga.

Where were all the outraged football parties when they signed the deal with Blackpool?

Are they are worse than being sponsored by banks who regularly fuck the average person to line the pockets of the rich?

I was thinking the same, but obviously Newcastle are a bigger team in a bigger competition so the advertising is to more people.

But yes, they are much worse than banks, that's the problem.

You're right - though many people wouldn't have a clue about who sponsors Blackpool, yet they more likely to know a 'big' Premiership club. I'm with you on banks and other financial institutions hardly being much better - yet they don't charge 4000% (?) interest - and are reported to employ some underhand tactics (putting it mildly) to getting their money back.

Newcastle are getting LFC'ed here: getting all the bad press for something that someone else already did (i.e. Hearts, Blackpool). Taking their combined heat because of the size of their name and their club. This shit regularly happens to LFC because everyone knows stories about how shitty LFC are make much better copy and excite far more comments, clicks, pageviews, etc.

I don't agree.

I think a cartel of banks colluding to exploit the interest rates for the entire country is much worse than a pay day loan company charging 4000% APR.

You have a choice in taking out a payday loan, and if you pay it back on the time the charges are not over the top. No one has a choice in relation to the interest rate.

there are certain name changes i can put up with like JJB becoming DW, its the same company and its a sponsored ground anyway.

Even the Etihad because the stadium didnt have an iconic name like Anfield or Old Trafford and its relatively new.

St. James Park is pretty iconic too and I'd never disrespect it by calling it the sports direct arena.

If its new then fair enough, if not then fuck it. If we stay at Anfield and say for arguements sake it was renamed the Carlsberg Arena id still call it Anfield. If Carlsberg built us a new ground and has their name on it i wouldnt argue with them

The Warrior Arena would be mouthwatering  ;D

Anyway, with all this Wonga business. I dont see whats wrong with it. Its being displayed like people dont have a choice and have to use 4000% APR. Pathetic I think, If I was a toon fan, Id be delighted, firstly the stadiums got their name officially back, secondly, MORE money.

On Tuesday night I listened to some journalist dick from the Newcastle Chronicle who was on the phone, giving his reaction of the Wonga news and how people 'morally' felt about it.

He hadn't got a clue what Wonga were, why these people might be upset, he just bleated on about 'It seems when Newcastle do something wrong it's blown out of proportion more than any other club.' He said 'Look at Liverpool's sponsors - how are ours any worse than that?' 'Lots of teams are sponsored by gambling companies etc...' The bloke wasn't getting the point and laughed when the host asked about the Muslim players in the side reacting, and how it would look that players earning millions per year are being sponsored by a firm who wrangle 400% APR out of poorer people etc...

Not a clue did he have.

Theres no uproar with all these betting site shirt sponsors? That surely is worse. Real Madrid sponsored by BWIN, The team with arguebly the biggest history. And like Hellrazor said, Liverpool sponsored Carlsberg. Encouraging people to get pissed and damage their health, noone had an uproar about this being morally wrong. Sure theyre shits will look SHIT, but they sometimes dont help themselves with crappy yellow and white stripey kits

He was spot on.

I don't remember Hearts or Blackpool (Both very poor areas targetted by Wonga also) getting any stick at all for their sponsorship.

Banks and financial institutes are much much worse than Wonga, or did I miss the part where Wonga illegally laundered hundreds of millions of pounds and colluded with other companies to manipulate the set interest rates.

Where do you think the vats majority of bookmakers profits come from? Shops in run down and poor areas.

As for the reaction of the muslim players.. laughable. It's none of their concern.

When I was going through a difficult time financially I had to go that route a couple of times ad they are way over the fucking top. Utter fucking c*nts as far as I'm concerned. I agree the normal banks are now governed by point scoring etc but £400 over 30 days attracts charges of £125.48. That's almost 33% a month... not per annum... a fucking month! The APR is 4,125% and the base rate is 360%.

It's extortionate and prays on the poorest in society.

I mean customers.

You choose whether you want to go down the 'payday loan' path.

You don't choose what interest rates are applied to your bank accounts. The banks choose. And they manipulate the fuck out of it.

Fair enough, I didn't realise the payback rates were that high over a short period.

However, I still stand by the fact that banks & bookmakers are just as bad and if not worse for exploiting the vunerable.
