It isn’t a glamour fixture in any way shape or form but it is one Liverpool fans should look forward too, West Ham have never beaten Liverpool at Anfield in the Premier League era, since the turn of the millennium the Hammers have only recorded 3 wins against Liverpool and you have to go back to September 1963 to find the last time West Ham left Anfield with all 3 points courtesy of a 2-1 win with goals from future world cup final heroes,  Martin Peters and Geoff Hurst, West Ham of course being the only CLUB in England to have won the world cup you know, Bobby Moore of course captained England in 1966 when West Ham won the Jules Rimet cup.

Anyway times continue to change as Liverpool will play their second home game of the season and for the first time in 2015-6 will kick off 3pm on a Saturday.  Both clubs have undergone changes on and off the pitch, as work continues on Liverpool’s new Main Stand, new signings like Roberto Firmino will be pushing for a first start at Anfield and there is also the possibility that strikers Divock Origi and Danny Ings will make their home debuts whilst fellow new man Christian Benteke will look to continue as he left off against Bournemouth when he marked his home debut with a goal.

Brendan Rodgers survived the summer but in the opposite dugout Sam Allardyce did not and he was replaced by former West Ham defender Slaven Bilic, the Hammers themselves are working on their home but in a different way to us as they will move to the Olympic Stadium in London next season having played for over a century at Upton Park which will sadly be no more.

Bilic’s signings include Irish international goalkeeper Darren Randolph from Birmingham, Spanish midfielder Pedro Obiang on a free from Sampdoria, Carl Jenkinson again joins on loan from Arsenal at right back, another loan signing is Manuel Lanzini, the Argentine midfielder is on loan from Al Jazira in the United Arab Emirates.
The two most high profile signings are defender Angelo Ogbonna from Juventus and Marseille attacking midfielder Dimitri Payet, the French international cost £10m and big things are expected of him having scored a respectable 15 goals in 83 appearances, Payet also made numerous assists and the Hammers reaped early dividends on the opening day when Payet impressed in a 2-0 win at Arsenal courtesy of goals from Cheikou Kouyate and Mauro Zarate.

After the dramatic win at Arsenal, Slaven Bilic’s side came back down to earth in their first home game of the season when Payet and co couldn’t prevent a 2-1 defeat to Leicester City, in injury time goalkeeper Adrian was also sent off.  It was a harsh reality check for not only Bilic but also young defender Reece  Oxford, the 16 year old stunned everybody with a brilliant opening day performance at Arsenal but he was well and truly brought back down to earth against Leicester and found himself taken off at half time.

If it was any consolation to the youngster, the defence went from bad to downright shit at home to Bournemouth next time out. New £7.5m defender Ogbonna was hooked before half time and he wasn’t even the worst, left back Aaron Cresswell was at fault for two goals and although the Hammers would fight back from 2-0 down to level things up at 2-2 the defence continued to implode, case in point when Carl Jenkinson took an hour to try clear a ball and was skinned by Max Gradel who he then pulled to the ground resulting in the Hammers 5th red card of the season. Bournemouth’s pace and movement caused problems all afternoon and Callum Wilson in particular exemplified this with a hat-trick to make it 4-2 (from the the resulting penalty) although West Ham did pull a goal back through Maiga they were beaten for the second home game in a row.

Liverpool meanwhile go into the game after a positive start to the season which has seen their much criticized backline concede no goals in 3 games and pick up a respectable 7 points.

In the premier league games that Liverpool have hosted against West Ham, we have won 14 of the 19 fixtures and are of course unbeaten. In that time the most memorable fixture between the two was not in the league but in the 2006 FA Cup final when Liverpool recovered from 2-0 and 3-2 deficits to drag the game to penalties before recording a 3-1 shootout victory. The game is one of the finest FA Cup finals in recent history and was a fitting end to the years the cup final was played in Cardiff.

It is of course remembered for 3 shootout penalty saves by Reds Keeper Pepe Reina and of course the stunning performance by Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard who having already scored a cracking goal (early in the second half) he then blasted a 35 yard volley through a sea of bodies into the bottom corner in the final minute of normal time to make it 3-3. The final will forever be remembered as the Gerrard final.

Last season saw Liverpool win this fixture 2-0 with goals from Raheem Sterling and the returning Daniel Sturridge who was making his comeback from injury number 9 of 21 he has suffered since joining the club. Sturridge is back in training for Liverpool but don’t expect to see him line up here.

West Ham also have a very worrying selection problem with goalkeeper Adrian suspended, Carl Jenkinson will also be suspended while upfront Enner Valencia, Mauro Zarate and former Liverpool striker Andy Carroll are all injured. The crisis upfront has lead to talk they are trying to push through a loan deal for Spurs striker Emmanuel Adebayor and Juventus striker Simone Zaza (was he in the Lion King? oh sorry that was Zazu).

Liverpool are without Daniel Sturridge and Joe Allen whilst Adam Lallana is unlikely to recover in time from the knock which ruled him out of the Arsenal game, Jordan Henderson is also a major doubt.

10 points from 4 games would be the ideal start to the season for Liverpool and at least for now remove any lingering doubt about the future of manager Brendan Rodgers, the West Ham defence will either come out fighting with a point to prove or hopefully crumble again. Let’s give it to them!

Very thoughtful OP mate.

Looking forward to a regular 3pm Sat kick off, a few pre match pints and hopefully 3 points.

If injuries persist then I would like to see the same team and setup as Arsenal.

2-0 to the Reds.
Liverpool was made for me and I was made for Liverpool.

Good OP - didn't realise that West Ham were the only club in England to have won the world cup.

Same line up that started v Arsenal - possibly Hendo in for Can if he's over his injury.
Unchanged back line for sure i would've thought.

Three points on Saturday and we'll be in great shape going into the Utd fixture.
Come on you Red Men !

Great match preview, honestly just can't wait to watch the reds play again, a feeling that was noticeably absent for me near the end of the last season.

Never really minded West Ham, of all the teams from 'Laandan' They're the ones I would like to go and watch.

With Adrian and Jenkinson out, and our defence looking sturdy, I am confident that we'll go into the international break with 10 from 12 which is absolutely amazing. Therefore, barring a horrible capitulation I'm predicting a 3-0. Firmino's first, Benteke's Second and James Milner at the death. :)

Great OP, thanks.

I'm glad Enner Valencia and Andy Carroll are both missing, as they are two players I'd think could cause us trouble in their own ways. Adrian is also a big loss for them as he's a GK capable of having "one of those days". Player to contain is no doubt Payet, but I have every confidence that our midfielders will be able to shackle him (Milner and Can/Lucas in particular).

My one concern is whether we will get enough width to break down a Bilic's West Ham side. Against Arsenal they played a 442 diamond that made the pitch very narrow and congested the area in front of their box to good effect, and Arsenal struggled to break them down because of it. Arsenal were naive in their approach though, insisting on playing tidy football through West Ham instead of looking for other alternatives to get in behind.

With that in mind I think the two key players for us in this game will be Clyne and Benteke. With Coutinho and Firmino operating centrally, it will be important to get width from fullbacks, and Clyne will surely be the FB who gets forward most. Benteke allows us to vary play by swinging in crosses, but the reason I think he'll be important is more to do with the fact that he can occupy both CB's on his own, thereby creating more space for Coutinho and Firmino and making it harder for West Ham defenders to condense the space in front of them.

If we go with a 433 then I think the team picks itself given that 3 of our midfielders are injured, and we should be unchanged from our lineup against Arsenal. Given how Brendan has embraced continuity in his side so far this season this seems the more likely option:

             Mignolet
Clyne Skrtel Lovren Gomez
              Lucas
       Milner       Can
 Firmino               Coutinho
            Benteke

However, given uncertainty over Lucas' future and the fact that we are at home I could certainly see a more attacking player selected instead of Lucas, with Coutinho dropping into a deeper midfield role. This is perhaps also a fixture where it would make sense to play two up front, though I'd be surprised to see that given hiw little we have played with a diamond 442 in preseason. Would be nice to see though:

              Mignolet
Clyne Skrtel Lovren Gomez
             Lucas/Can
      Milner         Coutinho
              Firmino
      Ings            Benteke

Or perhaps we could see a more conservative diamond with Coutinho in the No.10 and Can in the lineup instead of Ings, and Firmino supporting Benteke.

Either way, the keys for me based on what I've seen from West Ham and ourselves so far this season will be, in no particular order:

1. Width and quickness in our attacking play.
2. Pressing them high to force mistakes (see Cresswell and Jenkinson vs Bournemouth).
3. Contain their pace on the counter, especially Payet.
4. Set pieces. We haven't threatened enough as we should with Lovren, Skrtel, Benteke, etc, and WH will no doubt be looking to nick one just like they did against Arsenal at the other end.

Bilic has shown by beating Arsenal as well as with Beşiktaş that he is adept at setting up a team to frustrate a good attacking side, particularly away from home, but I can't see past a comfortable win for the home side here. We have this far looked incredibly resolute defensively this season, limiting our opponents to 8 shots on target in 3 games, and by my count only one clear chance (Sanchez post); while at the other end we have a trio of attackers who turned on the style against Arsenal and should have enough flair, creativity, and power to burst West Ham's bubble.

Prediction: 3-0 (Coutinho, Benteke, Milner)

Great OP Hellrazor, I particularly liked the pictures :P :wave

5 red cards in 3 games is a stat that's barely believable! I fancy them to implode badly at Anfield and add to that tally, Bilic's hardly the most stable, reckon that will continue to rub off on his side!

3-0

What's the deal with Henderson? Would expect him to come in for Lucas if he's fit.

I'm of the believe that the team that started the last game should play again. Would be nice to see the same defence for the fourth straight game.

5 reds in 8 games.

Good OP btw, my West Ham mates think they will be thrashed here as the only striker they have at the moment is Maiga who is (apparently) delaying his impending move away until after this game.

2 or 3-0 for me, another clean sheet would be lovely.

If their game at the Emirates is anything to go by, utilising width is key, and Clyne will help that drastically from such a game last year. Personally think we will see Moreno come in too.

I’ve plenty links to the clubs playing and backroom staff as many on here know thank you very much. Fair enough, I admire your optimism. But you’re absolute ostriches if you think this squad, even with 2 or 3 new, “cut price” players with potential get us anywhere close

Overview of West Ham lineups:

Vs Arsenal W0-2

                 Adrian
Tomkins Reid Ogbonna Cresswell
                  Oxford
           Noble      Kouyate
                  Payet
          Sakho      Zarate

Vs Leicester L1-2

                 Adrian
Jenkinson Reid Ogbonna Cresswell
                 Oxford
           Noble     Kouyate
  Zarate    Sakho     Payet

Vs Bournemouth L3-4

                   Randolph
Jenkinson Reid Ogbonna Cresswell
                  Obiang
          Noble       Kouyate
    Maiga      Sakho        Payet

Predicted lineup vs Liverpool

Suspensions: Adrian, Jenkinson
Injured: Carroll, Zarate, E. Valencia; O'Brien and Oxford doubts.

- Oxford got subbed at HT vs Leicester and Obiang took his place again vs Bournemouth.
- Ogbonna got subbed after only 35 mins for Tomkins against Bournemouth (http://readwestham.com/2015/08/22/angelo-ogbonna-angry-upset-early-substitution/), but Tomkins should be preferred RB (as against Arsenal) given that Jenkinson is suspended.

West Ham will probably stick to a narrow 442 diamond that brought them success at Arsenal, but they could alternatively play 433.

               Randolph
Tomkins Reid Ogbonna Cresswell
                 Obiang
          Noble     Kouyate
                 Payet
          Maiga   Sakho

Subs: Spiegel, Collins, Jarvis, Oxford, Nolan, Cullen, Lanzini

Key matchups

Clyne vs Cresswell
Lucas/Can vs Payet
Benteke vs Reid + Ogbonna

EDIT: Apparently Sakho and Maiga are doubts. I'd guess that Nolan and/or Jarvis would come into the team if one or both are out. Either way this seems like a great time to play West Ham. Pity the game isn't at Upton Park so we could get a win there out of the way while they are struggling :D

Odd thing to say after 3 games, but with Gomez on 3 bookings and facing suspension with 1 more, and a heavy fixture list in October, and given West ham's lack of width, maybe there is sense in some rotation here and giving Moreno a run out

It's 5 booking then a suspension which means he is 2 away not 1.

He needs to play considering he is doing so well.

Agree with this, those players deserve to keep their places, I know this is a different type of game, which may suit different players, but change things in the game if things are not going well.

Even as early as HT Brendan could use his subs, that's what squads are for, and these days you can guarantee we'll have a decent bench.

But I'd deffo give Monday's starting line up the chance to turn it on at home against lesser opposition (no disrespect to any Hammers reading this!)

I remember their goalie's father playing basketball when i was a kid, Ed Randolf was one of the first of the Americans who came to Ireland to play in the basketball league here.
Interesting fact: I was selected from the crowd as a 7 year old, to coach Ed's All Star team in my home town. ;D

great op bud.

I would say West Ham looking at the injuries and how their season has panned out, would be there for the taking, but this is probably what Arsenal thought like before their opening game and we all know how that went. Payet will be the one to watch out for i reckon, and if we can keep it tidy like we have done then we should be alright.

it's going to be a different type of game to the one v Arsenal, if we show the same type of tempo against West Ham as we did on Monday night then we'll be alright, but the issue is getting the players up for the game and showing that same level of tempo, commitment etc... As much as i would go for the same team, i would think a couple of changes would be good to see. I would be looking at the likes of Origi, Ings & Moreno to be getting a start of some more game time at the very least. Obviously would be good to see Sakho getting some minutes as well. I'd like to see Lucas retained but if Henderson comes back, then i can't see Brendan shifting Milner off the starting line up and i'd suspect that Lucas would be the fall guy in that respect. Which if it is then would worry me a bit in that you lose a little bit of creativity and a means of bringing it effectively from the back.

Wasn't that active on Rawk those days but how was it when Rafa used to change at least 50% of the playing personnel week after week?

It's 5 booking then a suspension which means he is 2 away not 1.

He needs to play considering he is doing so well.
It was quite annoying the way he took the yellow vs Arsenal, but when I watched it again I think it was good that he did. Arsenal had just countered and our defense was all over the shop.

As for a suspension, he's at no risk of missing the United game and it wouldn't be the end of the world if he misses either Norwich or Villa. If I could choose he would miss Norwich and be available vs Villa as Adama Traore is quite tricky.

Is Sakho actually going to be playing for these given his recent arrest? From their games that I've seen so far this season, the key to this game will be shutting down Payet. I'd assume after losing to Leicester and Bournemouth at home, Bilic will be parking the bus and doing whatever necessary to come away with a point. We have to test Randolph early and often as he is far inferior to Adrian

He has a groin strain too and is 50/50

6-0

There's more chance of stringing a few Andy Carroll games together, that there will be to see WHU string some passes together.

Same team as last game, I suppose. I could imagine Moreno on the left to strengthen our attack, but I'd be surprised to see any changes.

Fantastic OP.

I'm always wary of West Ham, something about them and I didn't realise they had never beaten us at Anfield (Prem Era) so that's made me feel a bit better.

If Henderson isn't 100% fully fit then he shouldn't be playing, really don't want Hodgson getting any ideas and selecting him to play for England. I would quite like to see the same midfield to be honest, there was a great balance to us on Monday night and if he is to go then I think Lucas would fully deserve an Anfield farewell.

So yeah basically an unchanged side for me, keep Gomez going and tell him not to worry about the yellow cards, even if he is to be booked v West Ham he would still be able to play against United and worse case scenario he is booked v them scumbags he would be banned for Norwich at home and if he can avoid a yellow then he would miss Aston Villa at home. No big deal.

Would quite like to see us going two up top at some point v West Ham, wouldn't have thought Firmino has a fully 90 minutes in him yet so after 65 maybe switch to the diamond and bring Danny Ings on for a run out, he needs some minutes and no better game than at home to West Ham when hopefully you're a couple of goals up!

2-0 Redmen, Benteke and Firmino.

Fine really, we tended to end each season strongly and I think most people recognised the role that rotation played in that.

There was a hysteria because the media created one.

I remember when we won 10 straight League games and then everyone praised the rotation.
