Liverpool primed for £5m Barton bid

Published 23:00 02/01/11
By Alan Nixon

Liverpool are ready to buy Preston’s Northern Ireland international midfield starlet Adam Barton as they build a squad for the future.

The Anfield club have been plotting raids on several youngsters in a bid to return to their old philosophy of grooming top young talent.

North End have been asking for £5million for the 19-year-old, but Liverpool hope to lower the price with add-ons.

Crap, got worried that was Joey Barton for a second! Is this lad any good, Preston are pretty hopeless at the mo.
Let's also never forget the 39!

I thought it might have been Joey, but didn't shit myself.

If I did I wouldn't feel it anymore anyway, thanks to my new special helping pants.
I trust the King, but if we lose a few more on the trot now - he may have to step aside, and we have to purchase another manager in the middle of the season. If we are relegated, this could be the end of our ambitions to win any title the next 100 years.

Dzeko to City? That should do them for another 6mths before they're buying a few more 30M+ strikers.

I think that would have been entirely up to him, as it is I dont think he had it in him to become the player he could have become however he has shown a bit of a shift in the last few months so mabye he has realised what he is throwing away

Daniel Agger admits he's ready to quit Liverpool as Juventus prepare to make their move

EXCLUSIVE

Daniel Agger has dropped a heavy hint he is ready to quit Liverpool, with Juventus ready to offer him the fresh start he feels he may need.

The Italian giants have pinpointed central defence as the key area for strengthening and made Agger their prime target, following a clear signal Liverpool are prepared to let him go.

Despite denials from Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson that they are looking to offload Agger, Wolfsburg sporting director Dieter Hoeness recently revealed they had been offered the cultured centre-back but had decided against making an offer.

uventus are ready to talk terms, though, and seem certain to pursue their interest, after the £6million signing from Brondby made it clear he is in no mood to remain on the fringes at Anfield.

‘If I’m not playing in the Liverpool team on a regular basis, then I am ready to move on,’ he said. ‘I have only just returned from three months out injured, so I am in no position, at the moment, to say I must be in the side for every game.

‘But once I have made a few appearances and regained full fitness, I would expect to be starting games. If I’m not playing, I can’t see a reason for staying.’

Juventus will take that as their cue for trying to negotiate Agger’s Anfield release during this month’s transfer window, though their hopes may hinge on persuading Schalke, Wolfsburg or Aston Villa to follow up their interest in former Liverpool midfielder Momo Sissoko.

With Agger valued at around £8million, Juventus need the cash to buy him outright this month, though they may try their luck by asking for an initial loan deal, with an understanding it will become permanent at the end of the season.

The likelihood of more transfer activity between Liverpool and Juventus appeared to increase, after it emerged that the Turin club's top talent spotter Fabio Paratici had flown to England for a lunch meeting with Anfield director of football strategy Damien Comolli.

The talks took place last week, with English-speaking Paratici, Juve general manager Giuseppe Marotta's closest aide, believed to have enquired about the availability of Agger and right-back Glen Johnson, as well as the terms of on-loan midfielder Alberto Aquilani's proposed permanent move to the Stadio Olimpico at the end of the season.

I don't blame Agger and spoke sense. He admits he's just coming back from injury so doesn't expect to be in the first team. Also if they are asking on loan, tell them they have robbed us once with Aquilani they would be taking the piss if they do the same. Also the Johnson link, unless we get our money back I don't see the point. He's slowly progressing into a good attacking defender, with his defensive position improving slowly. Given another 18 months under a different system he could be a very good player. Think on both players if the fee was right then I could understand, anything less than £10 Million for Agger would be a joke, when Lescott was sold for £25 million. Johnson either £20 million or nothing is happening.

Lescott was sold to Manchester City mate. Anyway, I think the club need to hang on to Agger and Johnson. They are younger compared to the majority of the first 11. Even if we had to sell them, we should demand between 35-40 million,  which I doubt Juve can afford especially if they are making the Aqua loan deal permanent. Any loan offers for Dagger should be laughed off.

more often than not imo, look at the difference with him and aurellio on compared to soto and pfk. I'll be gutted if he goes, especially for that money (and the fact I can't see us getting a proper replacement).

if we can keep him fit

That says it all about Agger unfortunately. He's been injured for so much of his time with us.

I rate him highly and think he should be a first-choice, but he can't be if he's going to be injured most of the time.

Nothing official yet ... It seems that only City have tabled the required bid so far, with the player stalling on the personal terms ... Judging by the reports in the media, it seems that he is still waiting on Juventus or Bayern to come in for him ...

One thing does need to be said: in the post-Benitez era, there was media-led clamour (but also some politicking going on at the club) to make the club more English; the idea being that the club had lost the very essence of what it means to be ‘Liverpool’. Guillem Ballague 18/11/10

He would suit 100% to NESVs profile for players though.

Still dreaming and wishing here. Remembering how EL C told the story how NESV signed those two players without the slightest hint before.

Imagine them coming out this week with the confirmation of the Dzeko signing. What a move this would be...
