The Kop .....
« on: December 23, 2004, 12:19:25 pm »
Over forty years ago
I was devoured by the Kop
Shankly showed me all I know
Redmen taught me to be true
And the journey was long
And the treasure was good
We were made to belong
To the kop, where we stood.

To you who speak Txt or in smilies
Ye who can’t spell Shanklys name right
And can't arsed to read a long thread
Or string four words together all night
And for this thread I know you won’t thank us
So this bits for you:
Fuck off you  :wanker :wanker :wanker
ILMFAO

Heysel’s horror appalled me
Hillsborough numbed; I cried
In revenge, they killed the Kop
And with its death my father died
For ten years in mourning I stayed away
Till Souness killed my wounded side
But the radio was on every match day
For the heart of a koppite can’t die

Do you know how it feels?
To belong to something
With your breath it has sung
In your mind it still sings
You breathe with its lungs
To the beat of its heart
You learnt from despair
To dance with the Kop in its joy

I was taught the Liverpool way
No-one ever walked alone
We clapped opponent’s skillful play
Loved our players to the bone
Songs of history songs of wit
The soundtrack to Anfield’s long life
Mostly don’t feature “Fuck” or “Shit”
Or insult some daft players wife.

A struggling player?
then sing out his name.
SUPPORT him with honour
He’ll come good again.
A kid starting out?
The mistakes are assured
Understanding repaid
By the goal he just scored

You tell me I’m getting too old
And the glory is all “Auld Lang Syne”
But it lingers afresh in my soul
And I still see the goals in my mind
My emotions say I own this club
It owned me; long before you
My relationship is purely love
Honoured and steadfast and true

What a sterile old place
is the Walton Breck End
It’s no longer the Kop,
it’s no longer a friend
Sullen and silent
No friends there to meet
You all have to sit
Reserved ticket seats

Sons and daughters of Walton Breck Road
Little faith you display
Scant respect you are owed
Your allegiance is grey
Shallow in faith
Your vision is dim
You speak well of Shankly
But your not from him

We win against Wrexham
And you’re wetting your kecks
We lose to the Blues
And you’re all sulking wrecks.
To the “bitters” spit bile
With no hope in your hearts
And no faith and no style
You have borrowed their part!

Adieu to GH
a new Shankly we seek
Enter Rafa the Saviour
Your patience lasts weeks
At the start of the season
If you’d have thought we’d be here
You’d have taken it gladly
Now read posts on here!

Bring us Money from Morgan
Or Siam or Yanks
The dollar is king;
Success flows from Banks
Oh! let us spend zillions
Of pounds we don’t have
 Mercenaries playing for millions
Not for the pride of the badge.

The answer to everything’s money
“Yes we bought our success in the sales”
“The black market profits were super”
“Oh you don’t want to know the details”
Raggedy-arsed kids in the boys pen
Used to look down from high, and dream dreams
They’d need to be up to some scam now
To afford the notes to get in.

Music and Boxing and football
To no-hopers presented a chance
A future, their future- OUR future
Through fitness and skill to advance
To watch and to learn from the legends
Who at Anfields bastion played
But we don’t want to know the young kids now
And prefer players bought - ready-made

In the glory years
Through which we strode
We couldn’t match the cash
Of them up the East Lancs Road
Yet we beat them by building
By patience and skill
Through the knowledge of Kenny
And Joe, Bob and Bill

I am a Liverpudlian
I am part of THE Spion Kop
I loved, sang and shouted
I am everything you’re not
I support THE team that’s dressed in red
It’s a concept you can’t know
It’s a spirit that’s called Liv –er- pool
Back to glory we will go

Yes I’m old, and increasingly bitter
That from Shanklys foundations we strayed
And replaced the supporters with moaners
And the kids with the well overpaid
But there still lies a hope in my anger
Given patience our new time will come
We will rebuild his bastion and treasure
And complete the job Shankly begun

Moaning Rawkites- I don’t know the names of
Or care where you’ve been or you’re from
You may sit in your “kop”; its not THE KOP
You may sit, but you’ll never belong
Sullen and silent and snidey
Except for the moans and the boos
You are not of THE way; the one true way
Please piss off- go and  try out the Blues

Happy to reply!
I live in N.Ireland, qualifying as an outoftowner I guess?
Been to 3 E Cup finals. Hitch hiked to first in London as a schoolboy on my own. Hitch hiked to second as a student on my own (Paris), etc etc
Supported LFC as a 7 year old. Kept scrapbooks of all presscuttings cos never could afford to go and see a game in England.
Saw first game at Anfield in 1974 as a lad, forcing big cos to take me.
Does this qualify as a supporter?

Spend a fair bit on plane journeys, hotels and match tickets bringing me and my lad to Anfield today, coming over 10-12 times a season. Always try and fit in a couple of away Euro games a season.
Show him all the videos....
Speak to him and family bout Shanks, Paisley, Kenny... all from outta Liverpool...

Wonder at the pride, passion and loyalty of The Liverpool Family from Ireland who fill the planes and hotels on matchday

Sing YNWA as loudly as its possible to sing

Never criticise any player wi the Liverbird on his chest

Hope this satisfies your curiosity

Not to say this represents anything more than any local Scouse supporter. No way!
But passion for Liverpool Football Club lives outside of Merseyside.

Great post, I always find it gutting that me ma and dad were both match goers during the 60's and 70's and lived in Walton for that time, must have been an ace time, what with the whole music scene associated with the city and all, you never know, maybe with the Capital of Culture thing and THE football looking up and proud once more, glory days will be round the corner again?
Anyway, this bit rung most true with me...

Quote
Mercenaries playing for millions
Not for the pride of the badge.

The answer to everything’s money
Quote

Never rung true any more than now, I read this this morning and was utterly disgusted.

King Hints at Spurs Departure (from BBC Sport: http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/t/tottenham_hotspur/4122927.stm).
King's agent Jonathan Barnett also voiced doubts over his client's long-term future, suggesting Spurs would have to offer a significantly better pay deal.

"He loves Tottenham but, at the same time, Ledley needs to be playing for a club who match his ambitions," said Barnett.

"It's up to Tottenham, with their new manager, whether they do that.

"They would have to break the bank to get him to sign another contract and that means the same kind of money being paid to other England defenders.

Seriously, that is just sickening. "He loves Spurs.....they would have to break the bank to get him to sign another contract". What an absolute arse! (Well, maybe soon enough eh?) Don't know about any other people on here, but I presume everyone has had the dream of playing for Liverpool and lifting a major honour, and if i was blessed to have the good fortune enough to even grace the pitch I would play on until I was surplus to requirements or had to retire when age caught up with me. How the frig did anyone let THIS happen? Why do footballers need fucking agents? When i was learning about footie as a kid i knew about my heros from Shoot not Heat magazine.

Such vitriol and bitterness...yet an amazing piece of work...Brilliant read, excellent piece of writing but misguided passion...

Anyway, my thoughts...

Why do LFC fans have to prove that they belong and that they are for real? I don't understand this. All fans are not created equal and certainly you don't need a tattoo on your forehead to prove that you are the greatest LFC fan ever. Heck, not every fan wants to be the greatest fan ever. So why the unrealistic expectation, why the Bushism ("you are with us or with them")? Every team in the world has *fans* who jump on the bandwagon when the team is doing well and jump off it when it is not. We still need these fans, we really do. In the interest of our great club, we should be inclusive rather than exclusive. I am not sure if your piece will welcome new fans into the club. Think about a ten year old in Brazil reading your piece. Do you think she/he will support our club after reading what you wrote? I am not too sure. Times have changed and all of us have to change with it. You seem to know so much about the club's history and its evident from your post that you have experienced some amazing moments. I wonder how a positive piece about your experiences would have sounded like. I can only imagine.

I have never been to Anfield. Neither do know about all the greatest games that our club played and nor do I remember all the famous Shankly quotes. I haven't memorized LFC's history and don't intend to. I couldn't tell you when the last time we won the European cup. Heck, I didn't even know who Paisely (did I spell that right?) was till a few years ago. I am sure all of this makes me less of a fan in your eyes. But is that really fair? We could argue about that forever...

The reality, as you so eloquently put it, is that dollar is King. And our club needs lots of them. The reason LFC still has so many fans around the world today is because of our success in the 80s. A lot of people who jumped on the LFC bandwagon back then (I am one of them) have continued to stay on. But today there is nothing that attracts new fans to our club. We don't win anything and posts like yours don't help either. I worry sometimes when I see young people around the world in 02 and Vodafone shirts. It's only a matter of time when the vodafone generation grows up and the old LFC supporters die off. And that world is scary.

So open your arms and welcome *all* those who want to come. Teach them the LFC way if you think you are the master. Don't tell them to fuck off if they moan. They moan because they care. They moan because they are fans just like you and fans who have never seen LFC win!

good stuff zap - as ever your words are heartfelt and passionate.

but maybe the old uns should retake the Kop and show the newbies what to do, instead of being too nostalgic from the side lines.

I go there with reserved seats but sing my heart out, i SIT a great deal but my heart stands in my mouth, I'm OOT but my soul is red. it's hard to sit in quietness but that is a challenge to me, not a regret.

Good post hinesy
Would be immense to try and recreate the old atmosphere on the Kop, and for that matter the rest of the stadium too.
While it is tempting for those who populated the Kop in the glory days to take a pop at how things are diff now etc., I agree it would be really welcome by all supporters to hear thoughts on how things can be improved.
The passion still lives, as seen past coupleagames!!
Read Seattlereds post with a degree of empathy, dont accept all his points, but do agree that as a club we should glorify in our proud boast of accepting 'Reds all over the World/Land';
One point in relation, despite the fact that O2 / Vodafone shirts are currently in vogue, one thing on which all commentators agree, past and present, is the unique fairness, wit and passion of the Liverpool crowd. Nice to hear suggestions as to how the atmosphere can be made even better

Last time I went on the Kop (Birmingham), the feller next to me apologised before the match because he was gonna sing shout and make a lot of noise.

Halfway through he tried to get them singing "We love you Liverpool"

No-one joined in

Couple of seconds silence, the
"I love you liverpool I do boomed out of his gob ...

FFS If I'd have said that in the old days, they'd have sent for the van and the men in the white coats!

Get me a seat in the middle and I'll be there every week I can and (if its a sin these days) be thrown out for being noisy

Very good.

It's sad that the loudest songs in anfield these days is horrible "who are ya!" or " your not singing anymore".

The sound of the Fields of Anfield Road when sung at full pelt sends a shiver down my spine, so at least we know we are capable of it, maybe some just can't be arsed?

Nail on head lad. Sittin at the back of the Kop vs Chelsea, massive game, players playin their heart out.....SILENCE!!! I was sittin singin my heart out screamin "La Rafa" I felt proper awkward  all i got was funny looks. Im too young to av gone the old Kop, but my Grandad uncle and dad have always told me the stories, how tight the boys pen was atmosphere, goin the aways, players  like Joey Jones etc, would have loved to have gone.

Thing that annoyed me most recently was the whole Kewell thing. Chose all the other big names to come for a strugglin Reds cos of his love, the history, the past players and a good manager(yes i mean GH). If ever a player needed a couple f games of gettin his name sung it was Harry Kewell, and all he got was moans im gettin seethin just typin this now with all the businessmen sittin there moanin at our "average " squad thats battered Arsenal Chelsea and Depor.  :no

now as soon as a player drops in form, theres boos and moans, people are writin off the Spanish lads already.

Excellent read mate. As an 18 year old I'm gutted I never got the chance to stand on the Kop. It's something that has eaten away at my insides ever since I can remember. These days I prefer the Road End to be honest.

Define Out of Towner, I now live in Cumbria.
The questions I ask is have you the passion?
The fervour?
The blind adoration?
Will you support if  (God forbid) we ever go back down?
Yes...end of, you'll do me
Firstly may I congradulate you on that fantastic piece of poetry... bloody brill!!! :wellin :wellin :wellin

Been supporting the Reds since 1974... have had some fantastic times (some very sad ones too)... we've played some brill football (some shite... quite recently too) and am still supporting them yet...

Have stood on the Kop with the atmosphere second to none... and now sit on it  with my reserved ticket... when compared to the good times it is very quite... and shout with all my might (thats because I can't sing)... don't get over quite as often as my health doesn't let me... but hell!!! does that stop me supporting them... NO FUCKEN WAY!!!

They were not so concerned with cultured football, but triers who gave 100%."
