Sunderland game postponed
« on: February 17, 2014, 07:39:37 pm »
Reds clash moved due to FA Cup.

Sunderland AFC has confirmed that the Barclays Premier League game against Liverpool has been postponed due to involvement in the quarter final of the FA Cup with Budweiser.

The Black Cats defeated Southampton in the fifth round of the competition to set up a clash with Brighton and Hove Albion and Hull City.

Gus Poyet’s men were originally scheduled to face the Reds at 8pm on Monday 10 March.

A new date for the game will be announced in due course.

City game in April will be moved as well assuming they stay in the cup. Could end up playing Chelsea and City in consecutive games if its rearranged for midweek.

I pray that will come off. Could well end up being the best week in the club's recent history.

That will be too much for our thin squad though.

Prefer both of them not to be tied up together. The City game before that will take up a lot of energy

So that means a fortnight's rest before the Old Trafford fixture.

Which means our front six. Fit and fresh. Pressing. Against David Moyes' lot.

It may be a long afternoon for Davey.

Unless they move it to the Wednesday night leaving us to play 3 days before United. I just checked on their official and they don't seem to have a game that midweek :(

Really shite that we have to play City & Chelsea back to back... again... with fuck all rest.

Reckon we might have to get some sort of practice match in on the free weekend to retain sharpness?

Wouldn't both clubs need to agree on the date it will be played? If so, surely we wouldn't agree to play it then.

They may be forced to really press for it. As well as being in the FA Cup, they have a cup final weekend against Man City (so another rearranged league game) plus their league game last mid week (also against City) needs rearranging after the weather forced it off. Add to that City being in both cups and the champions league and things start getting tricky with a view to fit that in.

Edit - Just read this back and it makes no sense to me never mind anyone else  ???

Yernited play Olympiakos on March 19th and if they're still in the tie from the first leg, which i'm guessing they will be, they might tinker with their squad for the game against us on the 15th.

I'd prefer it to be on the 12th to be honest, assuming United win their game on the weekend of 8th/9th they would be up for it if they seemed that bit close to us, if we played and beat Sunderland on the 12th it would leave a huge gap going into it

To be honest, this has kind of a "movie-script"-feel to it. Around Christmas we were basically "out of the title-race" after playing both of them in just a couple of days. Could it turn out to be the opposite this time?

There's no chance they will play anything other than their strongest team against us. Moyes is under far too much pressure to do that against us

A bit frustrating that we'll have no game for 2 weeks though, I like the games coming around quickly when we are going well.

There are internationals on March 5th. Probably one of those rare occasions where the international games have come at a good time for us. Barring any injuries of course.

I doubt it mate.

Like you mention, Sunderland have a fixture pile up now. And you would think the first postponed game they might play on the 12th would be the City game that was called off due to the weather.

Except that Man City are away to Barcelona that night

12th seems the obvious date for Sunderland to visit Anfield.

As champions league is on though, premier league games aren't allowed right?

No reason why a Premier League game couldn't be played. Although it may not be televised.

One thing does need to be said: in the post-Benitez era, there was media-led clamour (but also some politicking going on at the club) to make the club more English; the idea being that the club had lost the very essence of what it means to be ‘Liverpool’. Guillem Ballague 18/11/10

That's ridiculous. There's often little enough room as it is to squeeze games in, without closing the door on some midweeks. With that in mind, surely Man City are going to find it impossible to fulfill all their fixtures if they progress in Europe and the FA Cup, given that they also have a postponed league game (due to weather conditions) to catch up on too

I read the other day that if City stay in the Champions League and FA Cup to the final there is literally only one spot they have free to play the game they need to rearrange with Sunderland and that is April 15th/16th. The issue would be if they need to rearrange the game with us from the 12th.

No need to panic as far as I am concerned. We have 12 matches to play this season. Whether we play city and chelsea consecutively then so be it. We are all agreed that we need to win most of our games to be in with a shout so however they fall we beat what is put in front of us. We don`t have the distractions that others have.

Sadly, even though we only have the 12 prem league games to play in the remaining 11 (and a bit) weeks, we're still going to end up with a fixture backlog I think. Those CL rules are stupid, but it doesn't surprise me.

Perhaps I am being naive but at this stage of the season then wasn`t this always bound to happen ?  Not massively bothered. Lets smash swansea and see where we go from there
