But isn't it the point of the thread? Not that they are/were legends, but that they could have been legends?

In that case, Luis could have been a legend...
No Luis Garcia, no fifth European Cup. Qualifies as legend in my eyes.

So by that logic, Dudek and Traore are legends too? Garcia isn't a legend.

And that's exactly the reason why people say the word legend is branded about far too easily nowadays.

Because he tore his ACL, and the club didn't want to offer him more than a 2-year contract afterwards.

How the fuck do you have Gary Mac down as a "could have been"?

We signed him at 35 years old and he made a massive contribution to the Treble.

Not as daft as you using singular one-off goals to make your argument. Luis Garcia was absolutely immense all the way through our greatest ever CL campaign and a matchwinner on many occasions. Just admit you weren't a fan and let's move on eh?

Exactly. Legend of 2005.

2006 as well. Missed the final unfortunately but his winner in the semi was wonderful.

Rob Jones - Injures ruined him, Rat face wouldn’t of have got a look in for England had he been fit more!  :(
Nick Anelka - 50/50 choice between him and Diouf... the rest is history unfortunately ! :(
Harry Kewell - faded out of sight when a great career beckoned... great shame! :-\
Michael Owen - could of gone down in history for his entire career and not just the early year… his last choice in terms of the team he joined means he is confined to a life of abuse, all of his own doing im afraid.  >:(

The first one that came to mind was Litmanen. Wonderful player with superb technique and extraordinary vision. Sadly injured way too much during his career, and not just for us. Even so, we should have used him more, he was often left out even when fit.

Edit: Also, Rob Jones. Probably the best right back I've seen in England in the last 15-20 years.

Let's not do that boring debate on semantics. You probably have Carragher down as legend rather than the more truthful 'great servant'.

When my dad talks about Legends, or showed me legendary games from the club's history when I was little it didn't matter one jot to me whether the player was with the club 2 years or 10. It mattered about them doing the right stuff in the big games, that added to the legend of LFC. When i show my little ones [when I have them] videos of 05 or 06 they'll be in no doubt Luis Garcia is a liverpool legend.
Ding ding....and there, everyone, we have our definition for the purposes of this 'could have been' thread.

Every bit as important in our CL run in 2005 as Luis Garcia, surely? Along with his partner Hyypiä, Alonso, and Gerrard. And for a few years among the absolute best in his position, something I can't say of Garcia. Not to mention close to 700 games for the club. His peak wasn't that long, and I haven't always rated him as much as some, but of course he's a legend in my opinion.

Collymore - what a waste of talent. If he had got on with the job in hand he would of been a 'legend'

Morientes - very excited when we signed him but for different reasons it never worked out for him. Still he did a fair job keeping Sherlock on his toes.
Bill Shankly to Ian St John - 'If you're not sure what to do with the ball, just pop it in the net and we'll discuss your options afterwards.'

Morpheus: Have you ever had a dream, Neo, that you were so sure was real? What if you were unable to wake from that dream? How would you know the difference between the dream world and the real world?

Leaving aside the injury-curtailed careers, for sheer outrageous talent pissed up against the wall, there can be only one standout candidate...

Stan the Man Collymore.
I never understood why we sold him when we did.

Javier Mascherano. And here's a controversial one, Stan Collymore. The most gifted Liverpool striker I've seen.

We are of one mind. I'm still fucking angry about the 90s wasters.

Riedle: although he came here late. Still felt that he should have been played more though.
Litmanen: see above
Berger: I was there for his first goal in front of the Kop and it was a whopper. I thought at the time that he could have gone on to great things

I think we need some sort of definition for future reference as to what constitutes a 'Liverpool Legend'!

I know he didnt win as many trophies as some, but for me Fowler is a legend of the club.

As is Beardsley and Aldridge (think I saw one or two pondering over these players somewhere in this thread!)

If you don't think Robbie Fowler is a Liverpool legend then I recommend you seek urgent medical attention as you are either hooked on glue, or there is something else causing you a serious mental health problem.

Think people misunderstood the meaning of this thread (or maybe i did??), we are talking about players who were on their on becoming great players for the club, players you will remember in 50 years time but for unfortonate circumstances they havent fulfilled that potential. so talking about robbie fowler and macca is irrelevent they played here for lots of years but the team they played in couldnt acheive the heights that they could have reached.

anyway i would say Luis Garcia, Collymore, Cisse (thought he could be massive for us if not for his personality and the transitional period he was whilst at the club) and Anelka.

Few people have said this and Riedle is a great shout. Paddy Berger as well - cracking player but never cemented his name as well as he probably should have. Probably Mark Wright as well.

Redknapp? Possibly if he had avoided injury and got some consistency.

1- Torres
2- Owen
3- Alonso (i fucking miss him)

Torres was very close, just needed a couple of major trophies and to retire at LFC and would've regarded as a KOP legend.
