well so much for ambition then ::)

but on a serious note, £7m is an absolute steal for this guy. i can't believe we, or any of the top 4 weren't interested.

We could've used him, but where would we have put Agger then? Or should Woodgate have been back-up?

Absolute steal though, I'll give you that.

Nah, I could see him moving to a mid-table club for first team football, rather than one of the top four as back up centre back.

World Class when not injured and easily the best this Country had to offer.

I don't think you can level a lack of ambition at the lad, he just got back from Real Madrid. I think in life your priorites change sometimes with your circumstances. Woodgate made mistakes in his life that he is not proud of and he has been through a lot. He has suffered with injuries and I would imagine Madrid could be a lonely place when you are going through the Mill.

I think the lad just came home and he was so happy to be there that he wanted to stay.

Good luck to him he has been through a lot and I hope it has just made him a stronger and better person.

Most people do but some of them learn from their mistakes others don't.

As for doubting him being World Class. He was practically a one man defence when he played for Newcastle. Real Madrid are not big on buying second best and they never really used to look at signing foreign defenders. Woodgate has it all. He is good in the air, quick, strong, great on the deck. Superb defender.

I suppose this is one of those debates where perhaps our definitions of world class differ. I mean for me Nesta is world class, whereas I feel Woodgate  is very similar to Ferdinand in terms of people's perceptions of his abilty. I'm not saying he's poor but I just don't put him up there.

As any Leeds fan will tell you Woodgate was a far better player than Ferdinand.

The same Leeds fans who always used to tell me Kewell was better than Giggs, right up until the point he joined us and all of a sudden he was a lazy, overrated bastard that had done fuck all for them for the last 18 months anyway so they weren't bothered!!!

Ok we will set "the bar" as Carra. Is he better than Carragher? Who would you have in your team sheet first?

Name 3 defenders in England better than Carragher?

If you look at the 8 central defenders in the top 4:

Carvalhip
Terry
Vidic
Rio
Carra
Agger
Toure
(Arsenal's other CD)

Would he get in?  Maybe not possibly only Arsenal, but deffo would be in any other side in the country.

No contest. Not being biased but my first criterion for picking a defender is his abilty to defend. Carra every time. Hyppia in his prime too. Woodgate's not as good defensively as either of them.

I mean people saying £7m is a steal, if that's the case then how come none of the big 4 fancied it? It's not like they couldn't afford to take a punt on him even taking his injuries into account.

Yeah but that is based on anger and jealousy. When both Ferdinand and Woodgate played for them they had no need for either of those feelings. The two of them together put in one of the finest defensive displays I have seen at Anfield when they beat us 1-0. I think Harte and Kelly were the other 2 of that back 4 if memory serves.

Who is to say the big 4 didn't fancy it ? It could have been a loan deal with a first option to buy. I know Wenger is looking for a Centre Back but the rest of the top 4 aren't are they?

If the player is as good as you're making out then yes all 4 clubs would be in the market for him.
It could have been a loan deal with a first option to buy.
Woodgate said just a few weeks back that he wouldn't commit to Boro until the summer as he wanted to weigh up his options. He didn't have to join them.

Agger is a better deal, but if we were looking to replace Sami, and we didn't have Agger, he would have been worth looking at.

Good deal for Boro, but won't be used as much at big 4 club.

Since when have Middlesbrough had £7m lying around to spend on a centre back? Good player but surely they need more depth and quality all over the pitch?

Woodgate has returned to Boro as a first team coach. He joins Steve Agnew for his second match in charge since the departure of Aitor Karanka.
