I know people dread this thread being bumped...

...but wanted to share some good news. My Dad had a biopsy a couple of weeks ago and today has just had the all clear. Very pleased for him and my Mum, it's a weight off their minds. Just wanted to share that news, hope you don't mind!

Good luck to everyone on here who is going through this, or has friends and family still fighting their battles.

Excellent news mate.  Delighted for you all.   :-* :wave

Great news Nick.

The latest on my student is that during the holidays they didn't fly her to the US after all. She required a further op at Alder Hey to remove 1mm of malignancy that had been missed, and spent last week in recovery from that. She has today had a lumbar puncture to check of there has been any spread to the spine. The results will be within 48 hours. She then has the option of conventional radiotherapy or proton therapy in the States (at University of Florida). If the results of the lumbar puncture aren't good, she may need chemo instead. Apparently she is desperate to get back to school and has a very positive outlook.

That is great news Nick,

Imperator, I remain optimistic for your student, her positive outlook on desire to return to her studies is a wonderful thing. I will be praying that it has not spread and that she does not need chemo, as it is a horrible thing to experience, especially at her young age. Keep us informed on her progress please.

It's funny. You think you would love to get out of school for a bit (not for this reason, granted, but I daresay you take my point). Speaking from experience, having 6 weeks out in Year 9 was RUBBISH. I missed our form teacher, who also taught Physics and Chemistry, spilling a ridiculous combination of chemicals over a lab bench, causing a fire and mass evacuation. Amongst many other things.

You student has been in my thoughts since you first posted about her, and I really hope she wins through. Look after yourself, too - don't take all the strain of the emotional upset it will cause in school.

The amazing young lady in my class has just completed a week back in school. I have been blown away by her commitment and positivity which puts the rest of us to shame. I am increasingly convinced that if anyone can get over something like this, it is her.

Latest update - she has done 3 weeks back at school, but is leaving next week to go to the US for a 10 week programme of proton therapy. The treatment is taking place in Oklahoma at a specialist centre there. In the meantime she has asked us to gather work together for her and email it to her so she doesn't get behind in her GCSEs - that's the kind of kid she is. Her parents have to somehow find money for their own flights and 10 weeks of hotel accommodation so we're doing some fundraising in school to help out in some small way. And that's the story to this point... I'll keep you up to date. Thanks again for your prayers and well wishes.

Yeah same, Mark get in touch. Proton therapy is an impressive treatment, barely even touched the surface of its uses in this country sadly.

Be happy to chip in some - and keep us updated.

Brilliant news that. Missing ten weeks of class and still determined not to fall behind, this dedication is something all children should aspire to. Please keep us updated, and could you find out where in Oklahoma, I have some friends there who teach uni and I might able to square a meal for the parents.

Thought I'd add a post to this thread.

Cancer is affecting someone in my life currently. Incredibly sad story that does make me fill up when I think of them.

Someone I'd describe as one of my best mates. His missus is suffering breast cancer and secondary bone cancer. Its essentially now a task of making her life as long as possible to enable her to see as much of her daughters life as possible.

I met this chap years ago. He started working at my place.
As a couple, him and his missus were unable to have children so whilst going through course after course of ivf to try and have a child they started adopting children in need of short term care.

Finally got pregnant about 5 years ago. Brilliant news and they had a daughter! Fair to say, that the daughter is about as spolit as its possible for a child to be lol

She was first diagnosed with breast cancer, 1st April, 2010. She was treated with radiotherapy and a Mastectomy to remove the cancer and was in remission towards the backend of the year.

Next couple of checks were fine after xmas but following that, something was detected in her spine during a ct scan. An mri scan was quickly sorted and she was again diagnosed with scondary breast cancer in her spine exactly a year to the day later from the initial diagnosis.

I was completely gutted for him. He knew it was coming, almost like a self for-filling prophesy. The cancer is treatable with drugs to stop its spread and is not yet terminal but it is just a matter of time. Must be total agony to deal with that. Seriously, being a family of similar age with young kids, I have no idea how someone deals with it. But the way that they do, astounds me. Bravest couple of people I have ever met.

She's had 2 or 3 surgeries to try to strengthen her spine with braces to join the healthy vertebrae together and bypass the areas that have crumbled, the courses of drugs to hold it back. She struggles to get up in the morning and move around. There's always the possibility that at any moment she will end up with paralysis as the vertebrae give up the ghost.

Its now about living as much as they can. Each birthday that passes, each special day, 1st day at school. That sort of thing.

My missus and I have nothing but admiration for them. Its amazing how strong people can be.

i poseted a while back about my uncle who has throat and lung cancer, he was given a year to a year and a half to live.
but he didnt want to know how long he had left, he saw diff chap to the one that usally deals with his treatment, and this chaptold him by mistake.
any way my uncle is a very brave man ithink, because he does not want sympathy...... or for people to feel sorry for him , which is hard at times for me.
this is because he has two grown up daughters who dont want anything to do  with him even now, to cut a long story short he got a divorce from his wife
many years a go and after a long court case won custody of both his girls.
and he gave everything up to raise them work etc and a massive legal bill that has took him 20 years to pay off, put them through university etc
both girls reach a certain age and ask my uncle if they can have contact with there  mum who they have not seen for about 12 years.
as my uncle has said he would never stop them he said ok, as a result of everything that went on my uncle has not seen his girls for about 10 years
as there mother turned them against him.
he then wrote to his girls to tell them of his cancer, and he basicly got a reply saying if u have anything you want to say sorry for you best do it now :no
so i try to spend as much time with him as i can with my two boys and GF when he is up to seeing us that is.

I didn't post in this thread to start fundraising, but a few people indicated that they would like to contribute to the fund to help the parents of the young lady I told you all about (I won't name her on a public forum for obvious reasons). The fund has now started in school, so if anyone does feel they'd like to throw a few bob in the pot, you can PayPal me and I'll add it to the fund. Just PM me if you feel so inclined.

Many thanks once again for the support offered in this thread. :wave

thank you all for your good wishes, means a lot
my uncle starts some new treatment this week, that has not been tried anywere in the uk  apparently.
he is going to have Radiotherapy three days in a row this week, then everyday for the next two weeks
this will be hard on his body but it will help in ther research, and could help some one else in the future Brave man.

i just wanted to know if anyone in here from outside the uk had heard of such intensive Radiotherapy treatment before and if so what were the results.

Best wishes to anyone out there who has or knows anybody with the disease.

My father was diagnosed about a year ago with colon cancer. *Knock on wood* he has since been cancer free, and was able to completely rid himself of it due to early detection. It's a horrible fucking thing and just the diagnosis is enough to change your life and those around you for the worse.

You have to question the world we live in when the leaders of our world are more concerned with spending trillions of dollars/euros/whatever for weapons and military, and at the same time reducing national budgets for things like the treatment and or possible cures for diseases like cancer.  :(

Thoughts are with you and your Dad Kit. Seems you have lost enough in the last few years to this.

Balotelli, Falcao, Cavani...

I'll be shocked if it's anyone other Etoo. Etoo or no-one. Simples.

In fact, I'll do you all a favor and ban myself from the January transfer window forum if we get anyone other than Etoo.

Two very good friends of mine (brothers) have just lost their dad to this. Went in hospital 4 weeks ago with a headache, got the news this morning that he had passed away. Was only 65 :'(

Absolutely devastated. Can anyone give me some advice on how I should speak to them? I sent them a text earlier trying to console them, but obviously that's of little consolation to them. Anyone who has had similar experiences, I don't want to bring up bad memories but if you could tell me what comforted you during your time of grief I would really appreciate it. I'll leave them for the rest of today, they need to look after their sisters and mum so don't need me butting in, but how long do I leave it?

Thanks everyone :'(

there's been a few nights ive had to relieve myself with her beside me in the bed, in fairness to her, she made some sex noises which helped me along the way

not being funny, but don't try and find something to say that will make them feel better, cos there isn't anything really. Maybe just let them know that you're thinking of them, and if there's anything they need, that you're there for them.

From experience, what freaked me out when I lost my mum was that people talking to me split into 2 groups; the ones who had lost someone really close, and were comfortable talking to me, and the ones who hadn't, who either avoided me, or mumbled "sorry about your ma..." The thing that messed me up for a while was realising I'd moved from one group to the other. Does that even make any sense?

It was kind of you to send the text, but give it a couple of days and then offer your practical help with anything that needs doing - any running around and such - there's always loads to do.  And be ready to talk or listen to them if they indicate that's what they want.  As Markcd says, some people mumble/avoid - they're not being unkind, they're terrified of upsetting the bereaved, but it does make the bereaved feel isolated.
Rather a day as a lion than a lifetime as a sheep.

I can only be nice to one person a day.  Today is not your day.  Tomorrow doesn't look too good either.
I tried being reasonable.  I didn't like it.  Old enough to know better.  Young enough not to give a fuck.
