My suggestion would be- unless your current one is costing you more than normal running costs, keep your 8k in the bank.

My Astra diesel has done 225k  miles and no way iis it being changed just yet

Personally not a fan but most Volkswagons tend to hold their value and are seen as a good buy, decent Mondeo, fiesta wouldnt be bad either, safe too. something comfy

When it comes to a diesel, avoid BMW. When one thing goes wrong, a list tends to follow. Most reliable diesels are Volkswagens and to a slightly lesser extend, Audi. You have no other choice. Carry on :)

You are slightly biased Tony mate, thats not a dig at you. Is there a reason to avoid those models?

Saabs are good value. Ive a 900XS which ive had for >10yrs with zero issues. However this particular model is at 24mpg ouch. The newer ones are much better but still only 30mpg to 35mpg. I dont commute with it so i live with the poor mileage.

They are good solid and reliable and the boot/hatchback is cavernous. Ive had fridges and washing machines in it no problem.

I am buying another one, even though Saab is no longer in business, very soon. Purely because it never ever broke down or failed an MOT. Its very comfortable inside too.

Someone reversed into the rear quarter as i drove by once. Barerly a scratch, but his renault lost its rear bumper and crumpled his rear quarter. Seriously I had a scratch which tcutted out. Its seriously solid.

Yes seeing as the workforce that is making them until 2014 are no longer motivated, also we can possibly be on strike at the drop of a hat which would mean a longer wait.

Edit-
and there you go the afternoon shift has just downed tools...

His budget is 8k, so I don't think he's going to be on any waiting list.

Azi wait till March for the new shape Seat Leon to be out, and then pick up the current shape?
