Well, that was coming. Too bad those attempts by Carroll didn't go in-- first touch which will get improve with match sharpness-- as we were on course to giving Newcastle an absolute hammering. Henderson also turned into a different player with Gerrard besides him; boy, did they move that ball quickly!

It was a pretty listless performance until Gerrard came on. Without him, it would more than likely have ended up as a 1-1 draw.

If Gerrard can stay healthy now, it is very exciting to think what sort of a run we might be able to go on, even without Suarez in the team. Our defense is pretty solid, and so if Gerrard can add the incision to our attack it's been lacking we can put some wins together and push on.

No Ta, Watched Tiote closely tonight, and whilst his destroying is fine, his distribution and work with the ball is very poor.  He doesn't know what to do with it.

If I was buying a replacement for Lucas, I'd go for Tiote.  For a 6 month stand in, we already have Jay, no need to buy anyone.

He certainly did not strike me as a comparible player to Lucas, work rate was poor at best

I actually wondered if he was carrying an injury?  Lucas is a much better player.
Rossiter absolutely bossed it tonight. Really believe he'll end up playing more games this season than Lucas.

I think Spearing is more than capable of anchoring midfield especially if we keep playing with 3 in CM

Based on tonight's performances I'd like to see this line-up against City.

                 Reina

Johnson Skrtel Agger Enrique

            Hendo Spearing

Suarez       Gerrard      Bellamy

                 Carroll

It sounds really good. Henderson needs to be more agressive without a ball.

Cabaye will get 3 game ban for that tackle. Ref didn't see it so a panel will look at it and they will give him a ban for sure. Red card for violent conduct should have been given so thats a 3 match ban coming his way.

Wel it isn't fine. Gerrard makes it alot ebtter than it would be with anyone else in tehre. However, for now it is the way to go. Still would llike a CM/DM. That midfield i just about good enough we need someone really good in there for a big push in the second half of the season.

My cup runeth over with festive cheer this evening.

Allow me one niggle, just to chuck into the Carroll debate pot.
Did anyone notice him having a go at Enrique for that low cross in the 2nd half?
And I think he had a pop at Johnson in the first, and maybe even Downing as well.
I was really pleased with Andy's overall contribution and I believe in him, but just
a bit disappointed with that attitude, and wondering aloud if he needs to wind his neck in
a bit? Could be nothing – fair enough he's desperate to score, but that our play shouldn't
all be about perfect service at 6 foot 7 inches.

I remember when other fans were telling me Stevie is past it and I just laughed at them. You have to be simple to think there is a better midfielder in the Prem. Skrtel and Agger have been immense it takes a miracle deflection to beat them. I wish Bellamy could start every game and Spearing did brilliantly as a holding dm. How Cabaye didn't get sent off is beyond me. It's kinda obvious Kenny doesn't rate Adam very highly he's the first one sacrificed in the midfield if Lucas was fit I think he would be on the bench. 3 points against City would be nice now.

Seeing Hendos game go up so many levels after Gerrard came on is giving me cause for optimism. Hopefully Gerrard can help mould Hendo into a fine player if not his successor when the time comes.

How much did we need those 3 points, gives us a lot going into the City game. Missed the first 20 mins of the 2nd half, but it's obvious that Stevie is getting back to his best, it's just a question on whether he is fit enough to start the next game.

Both him and Bellamy are going to be very important for us, they give us the cutting edge that many of the others lack - hopefully some of their confidence will rub off onto the likes of Downing, Carroll & Adam

Happy New Year!

Let's be straight about Carroll. Everybody hopes that he'll start to score but he needs to do better. Gerrard's crossing was superb and I have no doubt that with crosses like that then Carroll will score.

This is a forum so it's ok to debate..........most people I know will support every player when they are playing but a forum would be a dull place if everybody had rose coloured specs on.

Let's hope that Gerrard keeps up the super performances and lifts everybody.
