Of course when the 2 pages turned into 3 pages part way through the games.....you knew something had happened and wished it was us

Goal fest!

I'm trying to think of some of the bigger games I had to 'watch' on Ceefax. Struggling for specific examples now! By extension though, I did have to follow the end of the UEFA Cup final v Alaves on Ceefax's younger cousin - text commentary on the internet which was still pretty sketchy back then. Following Golden Goal Extra Time on that was horrific!

I had totally forgotten writing this piece (in the same way I forgot my original log in or deleted it by mistake). My son forwarded it to me and asked whether it was me. Happy memories. Thanks to whoever linked to it for remember it .

Used to love Ceefax, and not just for the footie! IIRC there was a joke page on there as well that I used to love as a kid!

As if in a nod to giants now sadly no longer with us, all the old footie numbers still work on the bbc red button....so 300 for sport, 302 for footie, 303 for footie news, 316 for footie scores (I think) and 324 for the current league standings! I now it's sad but I prefer to use them rather than navigate around with the select buttons!

Ceefax is dead, long live the red button  ;D

While being dragged out shopping on a saturday afternoon, popping into Curry's or Dixons and asking the sales assistant to whack Ceefax on to check the scores.....great days :)

Oh yes, I forgot about the times stood in front of tellies in somewhere like Debenhams!

Remember doing that, there always used to be a group of blokes outside the shop looking though the window to check the latest scores after being dragged out by their other halves to do some shopping.

I used to play bamboozle on channel four at half time. I also remember the Palace 9-0 game and we had a whole page to ourselves with all the players listed.

Good old Ceefax, i loved it, sitting there for 2 hours watching scores, compelling viewing back then, is it only me or did anyone else return home steaming from a night out and sit there playing bamboozle on teletext until you fell asleep?

Remember years ago, me and the lads every Saturday use to go to the bookies and then go round someone's house/flat and spent 2 hours watching ceefax!! I miss them days :(

Upto a couple of years ago I still used ceefax to check results and transfer news every summer as someone mentioned earlier!!

Sad It's gone  :(

That just reminded me of that Clubcall number we used to have that I'd phone up during the summer to hear transfer news and the results from pre-season friendlies. I could still remember the number till recently too. Used to have to wait till my mum and dad weren't around as it was a premium rate number and they used to waffle on forever (much like the phone line does nowadays!) until they told you anything worth listening to.

My mate's parents had to ring up BT and bar that number because my mate was on there so much!

It was always a really ambiguous headline: "Reds in for Spanish ace!" and then it would turn out to be someone really obscure!

Gutting.

Remember 'update' where '303' or whetever the scores page number was would appear in the corner

Could only use that if there was one page though cos itd do it everytime the page turned! So itd have to be like only a few games not a full saturday list

First time I ever used this was a League Cup game and Steve Staunton got a hat-trick. Totally bizarre!

If you don't limit yourself with bad thoughts, you can fly

got it with a new tv in 1981,usually used it for midweek games that werent on the radio,i remember the suspense waiting for the page to turn to ours hoping we had scored.followed quite alot of big games in the 80's,as hardly anything was televised live, watch something like "dallas",which was on a wednesday night, then every five minutes check the score.once sky tv started, that was that, rarely used it for football again but great teenage memories,so thank you ceefax, gone but never forgotten.
shankly on hearing by a reporter that man utd and man city were bottom of the table said "aye, they are son and they will take some shifting"
