Its like watching a Weimaraner running and a Staffy running.

One has a massive amount of grace and style, the other has an awesome amount of power and energy.

Both great things to watch in their own way.

All the badge kissing in the world don't make up for the fact that they are, frankly, not Liverpool Football Club. It's not their fault. Its just how it is.

I am curious what would have happened with our club had we signed Babel's replacement at Ajax in the summer of 2007, instead of Babel?

If you're on about Suarez, It would've been too soon for him in my opinion. It took him about 18 months to really get going for us and that was after he'd made a name for himself at Ajax and the World Cup.

I know that he was only 20 at the time, but I am still curious what would have happened had we signed him instead of Babel in the summer of 2007. Imagine Suarez, Gerrard and Kuyt at the 3 behind Torres.

I think I realised I'd forgiven him when I saw this goal go in when I was watching it live. I just kept applauding when I realised who the scorer was.

All day long.
If he's being asked to head the ball too frequently - which isn't exactly his specialty - it could affect his ear and cause an infection. Especially if the ball hits him on the ear directly.

So you all believe his word is gospel..........ok then, I certainly don't.

I do. At least about the way he feels about us. If it was all PR, we'd have seen this story much sooner, perhaps leaked before his move. He has no reason to suck up to us now, not years and years after. And even if you think this is to get on the Liverpool Legends gravy train, there is no reason for him to keep stressing Atletico is where he belongs. (Besides, if Owen can leech off us as a Liverpool "legend", why would anyone need to say so much in such detail other than a few polite words about the current team?)

Also Suarez took it up another level after he left us, Nando on the other hand...yeah.

In any case, Suarez can perform anywhere - he performs for himself. He also plays for love, for his wife and family. As long as those things are in order he doesn't need a special connection or whatever in order to perform.

Torres is a much more sensitive soul, and needs the environment and his emotions sorted in order to perform. This is why he exploded when he came to us. Freed from the responsibility, pressure and guilt that comes with being captain of Atletico, he was freed from the shackles that kept his goal return so low. In other words he is a broken genius, more Juan Roman Riquelme than Zidane, whereas Suarez is... Wolverine without the internal moral dialogue. I still believe the need to feel right in order to perform is the main reason for his failure at Chelsea.

Still, a peak Suarez beats a peak Torres for me. He is a cage fighter, a wild beast. And he has a mutant X gene that helps him heal at twice the speed if anyone can even injure him in the first place. Just don't expect him to sacrifice anything beyond the pitch for the club or its fans.

A good read. Really wanted to read what Torres had to say, so thanks.

Have to say that this has been my take on Torres all the way. He was right for Liverpool. Still think he never should have left us. Chelsea was the wrong move for him, even if he got his trophies. At the time after Rafa left, I felt there was this need to create scapegoats. Both Mascherano and Torres suffered from this. I still think they deserved better after all they did for us. Liked that Torres felt at peace after his comeback in the testemonial. I remember it well. He posted something of a thank you on Twitter(?), didn't he? Something that was seen, but also removed by him. I always thought it was because he sensed that it was either someone trying to make fun of him, as if the song for him wasn't honest, or he was concerned that someone else would attack him for his tweet. Also, that pass when they beat us, I remember that one too. And the thought crossed my mind, that he really didn't want to score if he could avoid it. So he did.

I hope he's successful with Atletico. The Chelsea transfer was wrong, but I do have a soft spot for him. He was a great player for us.

I'm a 47 year old man , and seen some amazing players in my life , many of whom wore the shirt of my club , my team. I absolutely adored Torres in his prime , he was sensational ....him, Alonso and Gerrard were just incredible ....but suarez and that last season and a half.....fuck me l...live never seen a liverpool player do the things he did .....In many ways , I actually fell back in love with football because of him ...I doubt I will ever see a player like Luis in a red shirt .....torres was one of a few players of thst time I adored ....suarez is in a league of his own for me

Kenny and Rushie every time. I'd shoehorn Suarez in somewhere though. Fowler on the bench. Torres may just make the squad.

Torres was done at the top after the injury in 2010. We got a great deal in selling him to Chelsea and bought an even better player with less than half of the proceeds. The less said, about who we spent the rest on, the better.

Comolli is a prick.

It's quite obvious Torres would never have left us had we kept Alonso, and Mascherano. He clearly needed more of an arm around him during that period where we wanted to sell the club. It was a difficult situation for everyone (the players, the supporters, managers etc) which is a shame really.

Think I have forgiven him, though still annoyed he chose Chelsea at the time. He just never looked happy to be a plastic. Could have been some force if him and Suarez had been up front but alas it was never to be.

Despite not winning anything with Torres, it always felt like we could when he was here. Many great memories of him playing so fair play, YNWA Torres.

"It was difficult to leave Atletico. But it was not difficult to choose Liverpool"

That made me teary eyed. We know he is a Red and will remain one.

“That was the toughest day,” he prefers to say. “I felt so sorry for Stevie and for Liverpool. [They] were so close and really deserved to win the league. If they had won, I think Liverpool would have created history. What a moment for the city. It was so hard seeing the people in the stands. I still feel the same way for them. No matter what has happened, I still love them. I know some of them are still angry but it will not change how I feel for them. Atlético is my club but I still support Liverpool and I want them to win every game, every trophy.” :'(

Cracker of a player, played in a cracker of a team, had a great song. His story is such a part of the recent history of the club. We are lucky to be on the road back now.

Had Torres transitioned seamlessly from how he was playing with us to Chelsea and was playing at that high level, I don't think he would have such regrets, granted he would have missed some things about us as a club and the players etc.

He might have won trophies with Chelsea but it wasn't the same as mostly he wasn't playing at the level he was with us and that played a big part of not enjoying it so much as well as other factors.

People make mistakes. Have absolutely made poor job decisions in my life in a crisis moment. Don't begrudge him.

Was a fantastic striker. For better or worse, I will remember him more fondly than Suarez. Think the reason his exit hurt is because it signaled how dark the clouds had become.

great read, and he comes across really well.  the thing that puzzles me though is the fact that torres essentially blames kenny - as if a caretaker manager two weeks into the job could hold any kind of sway when the ownership and football 'strategist' had apparently already decided to get rid.

it did read as if torres was posting in the FSG thread at times though :D

*sigh*

So many great strikers. Torres was something special though. Him and Suarez are the two best strikers for Liverpool I have seen in the flesh. But with Suarez you could see the naked ambition. Torres was different. Torres was part of the club. What a team that was; Alonso, Gerrard, Mascherano, Torres... criminal they never won a league. Sadly he left for all the reasons you might expect and even sadder he was right to leave.

I never had any particular feelings towards Suarez. Always felt he didn't have any particular feelings towards us either. It's fair enough, he's a South American who always wanted to play for Barcelona and probably wanted to fuck off out of England sharpish seeing how the media treated him. I'm sure he remembers us fondly but nothing too special. Also considering his baggage that someone mentioned I'm slightly puzzled so many people absolutely worship and defend him so. He was a great player for us but it always felt more of a professional relationship.

I'm not saying I've been unaffected by it, but not like some who seem to compare it to being left by a loved one. And I do have players that I like at the club, past and present, who I have admired for their ability. I'd say that the strongest feelings I've had when someone's left the club is disappointment and worry about who will replace them.

Love is something I reserve for family and friends.

Maybe I'm also weird in the way that I don't hate other teams or players either. People throw around these terms way too lightly.

The club on the other hand is another matter. I have deep rooted feelings for Liverpool Football Club. I can get all misty eyed watchnig highlights of famous wins and feel pride about supporting this magnificent club.

Eh, I was just poking fun. I guess a lot of us, whether we're aware of it or not, treat things like football as morality plays and select our heroes accordingly. I think just, in a very direct way, certain players make watching football enjoyable and even magical, and that they represent certain characteristic archetypes on the pitch (there's no doubt Robbie, Stevie and Luis did that) that rub off on the team. When they go the team seems diminished in some way. I don't think that's the same as love but it is something that affects how much you get out of watching.

No, absolutely I agree. I think a lot of the "it's like my soul mate ass fucked me" emotion that gets bandied around these days is as much about being seen to grieve as it is about actual grieving. Very much entered my awareness during the weird outpouring of grief over the death of Diana, a person none of those weeping knew beyond a few paper headlines. It's almost infantile in some ways, far too many are indulgent of that kind of attention-seeking carry-on.

Yeah, really well put. It explains why so many love a player like Kuyt, despite his limitations, and why so few love Ronaldo, despite his evident skill.
