Here goes in the late 60s our
neighbours built a new main stand and top balcony this was in the day when they were known as the " Mersey millionaires " and did actually have a pot to piss in . Anyhow they built this stand which possibly was the best in the country and in the ultimate of luxury when you entered the stadium you could purchase a blue cushion to sit on which you watched the holy trinity win the championship in 1970
Alas this was the start of a 14 year barren run of trophies ( there consistent if anything ) and the new stand was now filled through the early 70s with plenty of disgruntled supporters ..though there arses were lovely and warm , anyhow after a defeat which there were plenty of it became a bit of a tradition in the stand that instead if returning the cushions to a skip like container they would be launched like frisbees onto the pitch in anger ...a sort of precursor to the fewm we see today .
As one contributor to this topic mentioned .. A similar thing happened in a European away game involving Liverpool . I think it was either benfica or barca ... But the reds became the first team to win a European game at this stadium and the locals were not happy with there teams performance and went full everton and rained the cushions onto the pitch in disgust . Our left back at the time joey jones ( a lad who had stood on the kop ) thinking they were aimed at the reds started throwing them back at the fans until sir bob got hold of him and explained the situation .
