There is very little in the way of expectation on him, and the debacle with Allardyce also lifts some pressure off the players. Southgate doesn't have any of the baggage that comes with a big name manager, and he is potentially in a better position to manage the talent within the squad. The tabloid press don't take him seriously, so if he drops Rooney, etc, and takes some other "risky" decisions that work out, then he may end up in a position of strength. I think the England players may perform surprisingly well for him.
