Beautifully written piece, thank you. Very evocative and touching to those who are old enough to remember times when such a story was possible.

I'd like to believe the hopeful faith of the last sentence - I fear there is nothing that unbridled money-lust can't destroy.

Lovely work Roy. Just lovely. The air got all dusty in here for a moment ;)

Reminds me of the time I was too shy to join my big bro getting Steve Heighway's autograph at Manchester airport. I try not to do regrets but there's one right there...

Thanks for this Roy, a superb read.

This piece, along with the Shankly book reading programme currently running on radio 4, the whole shitty business surrounding football especially at this time of year feels so much better.

Brilliant stuff Roy. I reckon we must all recognise ourselves in that boy. And I love the way he 'fought the urge' to come and speak to you after seeing the Jock Stein biography. But he couldn't fight it! That's what we're like. See a stranger in Red on the other side of the world and it's more perverse not to speak to them than it is to accost them and declare yourself a brother.

happened to me the other day Yorky, I was pulling away from a supermarket when this oldish bloke (not as old as me) :D  crossed the road with his family, obviously on holiday and a Liverpool shirt on. I pulled up and waved him across and shouted "Love that Shirt", whole family waved and laughed.

The first look of the green pitch on a night game at Anfield always got me. Ultra green! It wasn't Anfield, but climbing the last row of steps and looking out over the MCG for the friendly recently lit that spark again for me. 95,000 all as one for YNWA. We are still the best club in the bloody world!
We are Liverpool!

Yeah and more than likely pissed themselves laughing. I can honestly say that I have never mentioned it to anybody, I used to live in a town call Calpe, my brother lived there too, I think he told everyone and his dog, when I moved to where I live now I haven't said a word about it, but Calpe is only 20k from here. There is one lad who has moved from Calpe to Moraira recently, (West Ham fan) taken over a bar and now most locals know. I don't know what to make of it really, people seem really interested so if they ask It is usually, "what was he like"

That is so wonderful to read, thank you so much for that. I should get some sleep, but instead I want to dig out all the old annuals I used to have. It's the ones from before I was  born that I always loved the most.

I could not think of a more beautiful way to come back to Rawk after the difficulties than to read that post. Thanks again, Roy.

Slowly working my way through the outstanding sections of Shanks during my breaks this week at work and what a treat this was.

Made me remember when my grandad bought me my first crown paints kit (he's from Liverpool, I was born in Manchester) Twas Christmas and I was about 7, he was sat in his chair sipping a pint of mild and gestured me over, produced a hastily wrapped package which I tore open to discover a shining red kid, complete with shorts and socks.. He wasn't a man of many words and just simply said "Here you go, try this on for size - you support Liverpool now, one day you'll realise what it means" and over the many years of us sharing our passion for the club I do - memories like these just further strengthen the bond and make you feel privileged to be part of such a unique and special family.
