The very first Liverpool player I called my favourite.
Someone should do the right thing - go back in time to 1992 and destroy the codes to Championship Manager before it is ever released

Nice read mate. My mom can't stop harping on about Dharmendra too. But she liked other stars more!

Lol. It was always him in our household. He played marbles with my mum's uncle as they were from the same village

Great article mate, and a touch of class with the memorabilia! Show off! I'm too young for most of his career but distinctly remember him coming on in the 96 Cup Final, one of the most painful matches ever.

The standard by which all other strikers must be measured. Perhaps the first truly modern centre forward

Never thought I would read Dharmendra and Ian Rush in the same write up!  :)

A heartfelt tribute to a great player! Cheers!

I saw Dhamendra last Friday. He was switching on Christmas lights literally about one minute's walk from where I live. Wish it was Ian Rush though.
We have to change from doubter to believer. Now.

Ha. Quality.

Did he jump from a mountain, land on a horse and charge towards the dhakus next to the lightswitch?

Rushie would have switched them on with a well placed shot  :)

I remember being absolutely heartbroken when my dad told me about him leaving, I was only 8 at the time, and of course there was no Twitter etc in those days, so everything was radio/teletext/word of mouth, so naturally I didn't believe him, cried my eyes out, bit silly really, but I absolutely adore the man, still my favourite player even to this day.

Excellent read. Cheers! I was one of the 31,939 at Anfield that day. Feels like a lifetime ago now, but like you still remember that particular game vividly. I remember, as kids back then, we'd walk to and from the ground so we could use our bus fare to buy a programme or grab a portion of chips. At the ground, it was pay on the gate - with virtually no queues, either - and we'd stand on The Kop for about and hour or so before kick off, making sure we had a good spec behind the goal. Rush's volley (4th goal) that day is probably the best 'lost' goal (not captured by TV cameras) I've seen at Anfield. Some performance that day, too, against a decent Luton side.

great article, an unforgettable performance from a terrifying number 9. I remember the same chaos and looks fear you describe in the luton defense during many matches - particularly at the Kop end - and in world class internationals, they were bloody terrified of Rushie.

 - great stuff.

Thanks for posting the link  - I just realized, after looking at the programme, that I met my future wife that night in the Venue on Wood Street. Happy days :D

PS and a great little clip as well, he'd be a 100 million pound player these days - absolutely boss

Simply the finest British striker ever. That he came to play in the same team as the greatest British forward ever was sheer heaven. Rushie and Kenny, from 82 to 86,  I doubt there will ever be a strikeforce to match them at Liverpool or any other team in the land.

Sorry i'm a week late. I was about to post Thursday night, but was catching up on Waterloo Road on Youtube.

Happy belated Birthday Rushy. You were before my time, but I was told growing up in the 2000s how great you were. I never saw you play, (except highlights of Merseyside Derbies) but I remember the look on his face in the 2012 FA Cup Final when Drogba tied the record. That for me epitomised his winning mentality.

I'm almost certain we would of won another European Cup with him in the late 80s, if it weren't for obvious reasons.

I really wish I got to see him in his pomp. Only downside.

Hope you had a great day.  :scarf

Fantastic player, watched him score in so many of our games over the years. Have a good one Rushie.
