Off the cricket field, on which they are all utter c*nts without question, and given a guitar, the Aussies make some great music. Echoing my homie VdM, my favourite band of all time bar none was The Go-Betweens and my favourite songwriter Grant Mclennan. The Triffids are in my top 10. They have also produced Nick Cave/The Birthday Party, Ed Kuepper/The Saints/The Laughing Clowns, Died Pretty, The Dirty Three, The Church, Crime and the City Solution, The Hummingbirds, The Necks, The Blackeyed Susans, Dave Graney/The Moodists, The Cruel Sea, The Apartments and The Reels. A staggering hit rate for a country full of snaggletoothed soap dodgers.

NZ has punched ahead of its weight - both it and Oz have produced as much memorable music as we have in recent times. The aforementioned Clean and Straitjacket Fits, but also The Chills, Verlaines, Look Blue Go Purple, Bailterspace, The Able Tasmans, Snapper, Chris Knox and the massively, massively underrated (in the northern hemisphere any way) Mutton Birds. Almost enough for me to forgive them Ian 'Smuth' Smith. Almost.

Ha - the Apartments got a mention in today's Sydney Morning Herald. In the sport section of all places!

The offending piece:

IF YOU'RE NOT WATCHING SPORT, YOU SHOULD BE LISTENING TO …

The Apartments. Drift. Frontman Peter Milton Walsh emerged from the same Brisbane music hothouse period that produced Bailey/Kuepper/McLennan/Forster, but he missed out on the deserved plaudits of the quartet. The atypical Walsh has produced some of the best jangle guitar pop you're ever likely to hear - on this 1992 album the brilliant On Every Corner is the perfect example, but every one of the 10 tunes is a winner.

Don Walker, from Cold Chisel, is the match for any Antipodean song-writer lauded in the Northern hemisphere, from Kuepper, McLennan, McComb or indeed anyone else. Great songwriter, and definitely someone very much in touch with an essential "Australianess" in his craft. Also a total gentleman - as is the rest of the band, apart from Jimmy Barnes. A song like "Flame Trees" speaks of something that is a uniquely Australian experience - great song both lyrically and melodically.

Anyway, I like Frenzal Rhomb. Think they're from Melbourne. Some of it sounds a bit too similar to the 'NOFX' kind of sound though. (If that means anything to anybody.)

Cold Chisel reformation continues apace - expect a new studio LP from the band later this year. The only reason they'd be back together is because Don Walker has a slew of new material that "fits" the band's sound. Don Walker - urban poet par excellence.

Absolutely great live band. Had their time in the sun, so leave it there. But, if there is a reformation the next step would be to book a gig at the Armada Room at the Holiday Inn.

I have  relative who is good mates with the bassist and got to go and see them live at some very small venue, I think, in Bronte, last year (took my nephew as well - the lucky bugger!). There were about 100 people there - they were warming up for a much bigger gig. He said they were awesome, and right on top of their game. It's usually Jimmy Barnes who has torpedoed them in the past with his histrionic behaviour  (the irony of him being one of the ultimate heroes to bogans nationwide when he's such a prima donna) - if he can keep his shit together expect at the very least a solid LP and a cracking tour in 2010. Don Walker, Ian Moss - can't see something those two would be involved in that would be anything less than top quality, but I guess we'll wait and see.
