Best Metallica album ever?

Master Of Puppets, no ifs, ands or fucking buts. Amazing, from 'Battery' right through to 'Damage Inc.'.

I prefer Ride the Lightning

Used to be bigtime into hardcore/punk. Even was a straight-edger for a few years. But hardcore pushed me to explore other extreme genres, and that eventually got me into metal as well. From metalcore (Converge, Dillinger Escape Plan, Killswitch Engage, Hatebreed, etc.) to the real deal. Really enjoy the technical aspect of most metal, and I enjoy quite a few sub-genres.
One of the best and definitely most innovative metalbands of the past decade is undoubtedly Mastodon. Saw them just once, back on their 'Leviathan'-tour and even then I felt I was witnessing something great, back when they were much rawer and 'underground' (to use a vague term mainstream journalists apply when it comes to music beyond their expertise). Can't wait to see them on the tour of their latest and most accessible album to date, 'Crack the Skye': definitely in my album-list of the year.

Other than the innovative stuff, I enjoy the typical genre-bands as well. Quite a lot of stonerrock (silly term, but hey, whatever floats journalists' boats), sludge and doom: the old Kyuss obviously, Fu Manchu, Monster Magnet, Orange Goblin, Weedeater, High On Fire, Facedowninshit, Electric Wizard, Isis, Neurosis, Earth, etc.
Also enjoy the occasional thrash-, black- and deathclassics and contemporaries (Suffocation, I think, is a brilliant band).
And the classics ofcourse, like Motörhead, Sabbath, Led Zep, etc.

Pretty much it...

Can't stand it mate, to be honest. While it's better than St Rubbish, there's only one way to sum up that album, and it was done a lot better than me on another thread. Metallica are just making music for video games now. It's bog standard, middle of the road tripe and if it wasn't them, it wouldn't be a seller in the market today.

Honestly much prefer load and reload, and they were crap as well. No good metallica after the black album, but really, all you need is Kill em all, Ride the Lightening and Master of Puppets. I do really like and justice, but it's not in the same class (apart from one).

*gets off soapbox

Spot f*cking on.  Metallica lost a lot of fans after the Black Album.  Saw them in March in Glasgow.  Very dissappointed.  Saw them in 92 in Dublin on the Black Album tour.  There's no comparison between now and then.

Shame really.  They had the world at their feet when they released the Black Album.......but they f*cked it all up.

I've spent most of the morning listening to Anthrax's Greater Of Two Evil's album. Love it. It's a bit like Testament's First Strike Still Deadly. It's just re-recording of a load of the old songs (loads of Belladona stuff :D) but with much cooler drumming and down-tuned. A lot more modern and heavy sounding.

You forget just how many kick ass songs they had. Caught in a Mosh, I am the law, Metal thrashing mad, Indians, Among the living. Great stuff. ... WAAAAAR DAAAAANCE

Anyone here into Cradle Of Filth?
I was into Cradle in their early days. The principle of Evil made flesh is a fucking top, top album, as is Dusk and Her Embrace. I fell out of listening to them after that, i couldn't stand the next couple of albums, Midean especially I thought was toss. More so vocally than anything else. Dani seemed to forget that it's not all about screeching. Damnation and a Day was a good album though, and I enjoyed it, Nymphetamine wasn't as good but still had some good songs on it, Thornography was crap. But then, by that time, I'd had the misfortune of seeing the best and worst of Cradle live. Saw them twice in about 4 months. First was a small gig at the underworld. No cocking around, just great sound and a great set. Then I saw them at the Forum in Camden and it was all this circus rubbish. They spent so long getting these "freaks" out on stage they forgot to employ a competent soundman and all you could hear was snare and Dani. One of the worst gigs i've ever seen to be honest and I've only listened to them about 4 times since then and that was about 3/4 years ago.

Also, Dani is a complete fucking tool, which whilst has nothing to do with how they sound on record, does darken the image somewhat. If they could have kept their early lineup instead of changing 3 memebers per album after Dusk, I think they would have been unstoppable to be honest.

I wasn't that into the re-recordings, didn't sound right, even though John Bush was by far their best vocalist and the albums they did with him were better than the ones with Joey. That being said, the original lineup was a classic and had more standout songs, if you see what I mean....

You forgot Now it's Dark, N.F.L, Bring the Noise, Madhouse, In My World and many other greats from the Joey era!

I went to the Mayhem Festival Tuesday night when it was in my area.

Slayer
Killswitch Engage
Bullet for My Valentine
Cannibal Corpse
Trivium
Behemoth
All That Remains
Job For a Cowboy
God Forbid
Black Dahlia Murder
White Chapel

And for some idiotic reason Marilyn Manson to close it out after Slayer. After seeing the set Manson should be kicked off the tour and they should bring in someone else and push Slayer to the headlining spot.

I've seen Cradle Of Filth twice, both times here in Dublin.

I thought they were pretty good, although the highlight of the second show was a drunk idiot deciding to dive off of the balcony in the Temple Bar Music Centre, and the crowd parted like the Red Sea.

Today I have been mostly listening to Opeth, All That Remains and... White Skull? Just found a load of their stuff up on Youtube. I've got their best album (Public Glory, Secret Agony) somewhere but no idea where. It's power metal, and cheesy, but a lot more serious than your Rhapsody and Dragonforce. A little darker, and as a result, much cooler. If anyone has that album, please feel free to upload Field of Peace. I haven't heard it in years and know there's a kick ass solo at the end of it.

Here's a couple of songs for ya...

Samey Italian power metal. God bless.

Fucking hell :o That's some bloody great set of bands in tour

The way it was set up was great as well. There were three stages: the Main stage and two second stages. I wouldn't call one a second and the other a third because of how they were used. They were set up right next to each other so when one band was playing, a band on the other stage would be sound checking (it can be done through headphones so as not to interrupt the band playing). When one band was done, people would migrate to the other stage and about two minutes later, the next band would start. From 2 PM to about 7 PM you could stand there and watch every band from White Chapel to Cannibal Corpse on that list without having to move. Once they were done out there they had about a thirty minute break for everyone to move from where they were to the main stage for the final four bands of the day.

I left my apartment at noon and didn't get home until midnight.

It was my first time seeing Slayer live. I really wish they had Manson's timeslot because their lighting would have been so much better had it been darker for their set (outdoor venue).

Thin Lizzy - The greatest riff and melodic rockers of all time, turned to metal at the last days of their existence, and weren't too bad at it.

Saw them at the MEN earlier in the year and I actually left the arena before they did!  Yep, they're so out to make money, that's their number one goal.  That's why the band were so fucking pleased to be playing Manchester that they stayed out on stage after they'd been told to stop playing to feel the audience.

Seen them many times and I find it difficult to understand how any metal fan could diss them!  What's with the programme?  Is it cool to slag them, is it the done thing?  is it what you cool fucking nu metal shit heads do?  Toss.  Tallica were, are and always will be legends of the fucking genre, crawl back under your stones and listen yo your alternative, hard core doom german death metal you fucking weirdo, viking, painted leather jacketed role playing dungeons and dragons fuck goblins!
:lmao

Mate calm the fuck down. Your being hilarious. There's no need to be so wound up over someone elses opinions on a band you (clearly) love. Just because you've seen them live many times and can't understand how anyone would diss them, i've seen them 3 times and not once have I come away impressed. So it's all perspective isn't it really.

And just so we're clear "you fucking weirdo, viking, painted leather jacketed role playing dungeons and dragons fuck goblins!" is nearly right, but I don't wear leather jackets. Also, German hardcore doom german death metal isn't my thing......:P

Cock!

Fucking hell, it doesn't half piss me off all these fucking numpties slagging Talica off.  Who the fuck are you, where the fuck have you been, who the fuck have you seen and what qualifies you to dismiss the best thrash metal band in the world.

Comw on, tell me, who's better than Metallica?  I've asked it before and got the reply Motorhead!  Hmm yeah!  Ace of Spades, couple of other good songs and then erm, hmm?  Wll come on, you who can dismiss Talica, tell me who's better, I'll listen to them and then realise how fucking well full of shit you are!

Best album is Puppets by the way.  And the new album is fucking brilliant.  Some right cocks on here mind (proper metal fans) who hate Metallica because of napster and that.  Sad to be so bitter.

Shut the fuck up you annoying little cliché of a cretin. There's already a thread for Metallica, where you mental midgets can throw little plastic balls at yourselves and moisten up your vaginas over a band who can't record an album without a film crew, group therapist and months of crying.

And jesus, the irony, I see you, of Ulrich-blowing fame, calling Mustaine (sorry - "Mundaine" - ... As mundane as a two hour movie cateloging the recording of an abortion of an album) arrogant. After you just told everyone who the undisputed masters of music are.

And so a good thread descends into farce. It always was going to be one of the sensitive Melodramatica fans that was going to start it off.

Back on topic - Has anyone got the last Opeth album. Tempted to order it at the moment. Been listening to the albums from the last 10 years today, from Blackwater Park to Ghost Reveries, and been tempted to get it.

Opeth have to be one of the best bands ever just to leave alone for a while and then come back to after a couple of months. There's so much going on, so many different layers, great playing, good vocals and they've managed to get heaviness and a bit of groove into the riffs. Mikael Akerfeldt is a beast of a musician.

Whats it called mate,Watershed?

The last Opeth album? Watershed.

There's actually some really cool stuff on that Pantera album. Shame it was disowned. Judging by the cover Vinnie Paul didn't want it to see the light of day. We'll Meet Again is a cool song though.

Is the new(est) Down album any good mate? I've got NOLa somewhere, but didn't really pay much attention after that. Borrowed the 2nd one off a mate, but didn't really carry on paying much attention.

Cheers for those. Can't actually download as it's not my computer though. I'll just bite the bullet eventually. with Play and Amazon it's not like you're ever going to be shafted on the price. Better than seeing Far Beyond Driven on sale for £12 in HMV.

Watershed is a very good album I reckon, better than Ghost Reveries and worth checking out. However, it has split opinion with me and my maes who listen to opeth. I generally just listen and enjoy everything and anything that they do, but a mate of mine says he has trouble with watershed as he thinks it sounds like a porcupine tree album and not opeth. Which is no bad thing as I love PT, but thought i'd throw it out there. Personally I don't think it sounds anything like PT.

3rd Down album is way better than the second, but still it's not a patch on NOLA which is a fucking amazing album

Tsubasa, Mad season are fucking quality aren't they! ;)

Right then, now that the thread seems to be back on track (and please, lets leave the fanboy bullshit out of this thread) perhaps we can get some recommendations out of each other for bands that the others might not have listened to?

Here's mine for today. Susperia. Basically it's a bunch of people who used to play in some black metal bands, but who, over the last 3 albums (unlimited, Cut from Stone and this year Attitude) have begun to play so fucking killer power/thrash. If you can get hold of any of those 3 albums, you won't be dissapointed. A bit reminiscent of latter day Testament in places (in fact, so much so that Chuck Billy makes an appearance on Attitude). Obligatory shit video here :D

And just because I brough them up, here's more than meets the eye from Formation of Damnation, Testaments latest

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=09rHDabBQfA

Insteresting to see Paul Bostaph back on drums in metal, seeing as he left slayer to get out of metal, or so I thought....

I agree with some of your post(although I wouldn't consider myself a 'Melodramatica' fan).

While I loved the Black Album, I wasn't impressed with the three that followed it; especially 'St.Anger'. Lars' drums reminded me of when my kids would bust out the pots and pans in the kitchen. And the pots and pans sounded better.

SKOM was cringeworthy. Everytime I watched that twat Phil Towle pontificate and try to ingratiate himself into the band, I wanted to reach through the screen and bitchslap him until he cried for his mother.

ETA: As for Dave Mustaine, I agree that Megadeth are a great band. I loved the 'Peace Sells.....But Who's Buying?' and 'Countdown To Extinction' albums, and he's a great guitarist. But Jesus Christ, Dave, how long ago were you booted out of Metallica? It's as if he's letting all this bitterness and hate chew him up over something that happened damn near 30 years ago.

Megadeth have been an inspirational band in their own right, so why can't Dave just stop whining and accept that he's a fucking legendary guitarist, and he didn't need Metallica to get there?

As an aside, are you the same fella who had a drunken rant at me for having the temerity to suggest Slayer are better than Metallica in that Metallica thread?

... or is this just further proof that "Tallica" fans are poofs who can't handle their ale? :P

Sonisphere is looking less attractive now, Machine Head, The Sword and Thin Lizzy have all pulled out and Lamb of God will be without Mark Morton :(
