Filler....fuckin hell la. So cool. I heard that in the back ground of a scene in the opening episode of the excellent Issa Rae series, Insecure.

In fact both Insecure and Atlanta...whilst being two of the best new series of the Autumn season...they both had stellar soundtracks on them.

This stopped me watching an episode of Atlanta, Juneteenth, I think...from the best new jazz lp from this decade.

And from the same label as Washington, the always excellent Thundercat from another ep of Insecure.

Enjoyed the Kamsai Washington. I'd heard about half of the LP and didn't come back to it. Didn't really grab me at first. Was up on many a top 50 etc, so will try and do that again.

Wasn't that on with Thundercat.

I don't know about best LP's of the last decade really, but if there was one going, I'd throw something by Mats Gustafsson in there, and I'll randomly go with:

and I'll sit down with it again I think (or stand as it happens).

I must admit the Washington LP is hard going...it's as long as fuck. It's one that needs time and consideration, but it's deffo worth it.

Guys, Also posted this in a London thread but going to post in here too.

Any of you cool cats been to Ronnie Scotts?

Going down to London for the weekend before the Watford game and going to make a weekend of it.

Really fancy Ronnie Scotts on the Sunday night. I've always wanted to go there.

Before I book, any tips. Is it worth booking a table for food to get a better seat and view etc?

I appreciate there is a late late show other nights of the week but I cant do the Saturday.  Sunday is my only option really but it looks like its open until midnight which is fine.

cheers for any advice :)

I've been twice, but a long long time ago. Once we booked for a big (ish - 10?) party and we were sat at the back against a wall to the side, and the view was fine I think, the other time we just walked in on passing. This was 20 years ago tho! It's not a huge place so I reckon you'd be fine wherever, but it could well have changed a bit. Enjoy :)

Cheers Filler.  Just called Ronnie's and booked me and the missus priority seating for the Sunday night.

Artist on is a chap called Lionel Loueke, he's an African Blue Note Artist.  He's got his own Wiki page so he's quite well known :)

Haven't looked in here for ages, but love this one. It's great to be lifted from my rut into the present day (If that's what it is). Reminds me of Azar Lawrence, George Duke, Jules Broussard (Aspirations), Dirk Kuyt , Firmino, touch of Moacir Santos. Oh fuck it's great being pissed and listenng to a bit of top latin jazz.

Been enjoying this Bossa Nova/Brazilian Jazz classic the past few days. The title track is fantastic

Santana's version on Caravanserai is also magnificent, but at the risk of sounding pretentious, it should be listened to in context, ie. the whole album in one sitting. Even after 45 years I never leave home without it. Truly superb. He should have ritually committed suicide in front of the whole world just to draw attention to this masterpiece (even worth mentioning on a jazz thread!!).

The last track on Joe Henderson's 'Elements' LP (1973). Four tracks, Fire, Air, Water & Earth. All are great, but this could last 13 hours, not 13 minutes for me. A beautiful sunny morning number. Play loud.

Can anyone recommend me some Thelonius Monk records please?

I've only got one track of his on iTunes at the moment, called 'Ruby, My Dear', it's quite brilliant, if anyone knows of similar stuff of his I'd be much obliged.

Monk and Mulligan is good

I wish I was surrounded by more jazz when I was younger. It's a constantly exciting thing and there's so much to mine. I don't read books about it, and I know very little about its development and its roots and its ideas, but it just hits so many spots, and sometimes, all at the same time.

I heartily recommend listening to Sun Ra.

This is his first album: 'Jazz By Sun Ra' (1957)

<a href="https://www.youtube.com/v/s4NS4QfVtT8" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="bbc_link bbc_flash_disabled new_win">https://www.youtube.com/v/s4NS4QfVtT8</a>

I had a Sun Ra 'in chronological order' session some weeks back going up to his 12th LP and it was a wonderful day. It was odd to hear known tracks and occassional albums interspersed with lesser known ones in that way, but shit me, what a glorious thing.

I frequent a few record shops out here and I find some real gems, if you cant listen to it live then Vinyl is the next best thing.

Sometimes you can find rare live recordings and/or import pressings that are absolutely brilliant.

if you search youtube for Sons of Kemet 'Burn', you'll get a playlist for Sons of Kemet's first LP 'Burn' 2011. (edit: It has The Godfather tune on it. oof)

This is their 2nd LP:

Sons Of Kemet - Lest We Forget What We Came Here To Do. 120,000 views in 6 months. What a joy.

and their Mercury Prize 2018 winning LP is also on youtube. Fair fucks.:

If it doesn't win the Mercury Prize, there should be a riot.

My 8 year old son suddenly thinks Dad is hip, as I'm now throwing shapes round the house listening to rap. Haha.

'Hutchings and his bandmates are irrepressibly ambitious in their aim to break down musical boundaries, and accordingly, they’ve produced a thrilling shape-shifter of a record that mines the rich diversity not only of jazz’s history but of dub, ska, Afrobeat and more besides.'
