In terms of currently airing (ore returning) TV I dont think anything comes close to this show. In terms of finished shows, Oz and The Shield are up there for me. Got The Wire and Sopranos still to watch in the future.

In terms of charcaterisation and chemistry on screen, I think Cranston and Paul are in a bit of a league of their own, sensational.

Only just finished watching season 2 of Breaking Bad and I'd agree with you were it not for the existence of Mad Men.

I agree that it's only in the final analysis that such comparisons can be made. Hence the reason I agree with your choices one and two!

Any word when S3 of Breaking Bad will be shown in the UK?

Am towards the end of season 1 of Mad Men and so far, its a good show, but nowhere near as gripping or good as the others mentionned in this thread (Wire, Sopranos, BBAD,Oz...).

Maybe it'll pick up but so far it's nothing out of this world for me.

Yes, it is.

The reviews for it were so-so, and I gave it a miss.

Glad I went back! I started watching two weeks ago and I'm finished with the first two seasons and have about 4 episodes left of season 3. It's brilliant, you jsut never know where it's going. AMC have had four original series, three have been excellent, and I haven't seen the other, but they are doing great work.

Has there ever been a more gripping piece of TV than the car park scene in the 'One Minute' episode from season three?

I think not.

Best. Show. On. TV!

I finished the first 3 series' in roughly a week, soon after the third series had just finished last summer. Gutted when i found out i'd to wait near a full year for the 4th series.

Brilliant show. Best thing I've seen, together with 'Boardwalk Empire', since the ending of 'The Wire'. Still doesn't come close to 'The Wire' though, but I hold it in higher regard than, say, the extremely overrated 'Mad Men'.

I have watched the entire 1st, 2nd and 3rd series of this in the last week or so (had a bit of spare time on my hands from my works shift pattern). Downloaded them all as I went along and just couldn't stop. It is as good as any tv series I have ever seen rivalled only by the first series of 'The Wire'.

Ive not seen 'Dexter' (going to watch it after I have got through the OZ boxset) but I strongly recommend 'The Wire', first series is so good.

I'm taking my time with the 3rd season of this, about half way through it now. There's so much good stuff to watch, I haven't even watched season 5 of Dexter yet. I'm really getting into Battlestar Galactica on Sky Atlantic, I didn't bother with it the first time around.
Breaking Bad is still up there, though, fucking brilliant show.

This show is fucking incredible.  I had waited a long time to start it and once i did a few weeks ago, i knocked out the first two seasons and half of season 3 in about 6 or 7 days.  I've been taking a break since then but I'm ready to start back up.  I've really never seen anything like this show; it's just so insane and the plot just gets thicker and thicker in every single episode.  Frankly it deserves the attention of more people on this board.  I know it's not worth much but I personally guarantee that anyone who hasn't seen this show yet will absolutely LOVE it if they give it a shot.

from Wiki  On June 14, 2010, AMC announced that Breaking Bad was renewed for a fourth, 13-episode season.[1] Production began in January 2011 and the season is scheduled to premiere on July 17, 2011.[2][3] To bridge the gap between seasons, three mini episodes of four minutes in length will be produced.[16]

Never mind S4, I find it astonishing that no broadcaster appears to have picked up the option of showing S3 in the UK yet and can only assume it's a cost issue.

Recently got Seasons 1 and 2 on DVD

Can't believe how good it is. For me, it does for tv drama what The Band did for music. Delightful exquisite subtle - fused with the kick of a demented mule.

The storyline is so far off the wall it defies gravity, so bizzarre yet somehow at the same time so completely believable the way it evolves. The writing, characterization and the acting that brings those two essential ingredients for great television to life is simply as fine and as rivetting and compelling as you could ever wish for.

Also parts of it are too funny. at times I'm unsure whether it's a comedy or drama series.

I'd have no hesitation in bracketing it alongside Sopranos, The Wire and Deadwood as an all time television high based on those criteria.

So far we've watched the entire first season [Only £7 on Amazon] and 7 episodes of the second season. Truly outstanding tv.

Compelling stuff.

Reading some of the above posts it seems it actually gets better!!!!!

happy days.

Thanks whoever recommended it.

 :)

PS I didn't say Lost as I didn't want an argument.

So far I'm yet to find a character I haven't fallen in love with due to the sheer brilliance that's being acted out in front of our eyes. I find them all so superbly written and acted. All are absorbing. Very much like the deadwood, Wire and soprano characters. Not sure what it is. The humour is what really impresses me I guess. At times it's real pause the action and laugh out loud. The scene where the lawyer asks why don't you just kill brandon had me in pleats.

I guess Walt and jesse as the two main ones steal it but its a close call as they're all just so feckin good.

When I started watching I thought Jesse was going to be a terrible character (I had low expectations of the show, forgive me) but he's grown into possibly one of the deepest and most conflicted characters on TV today.  In particular, the season 1 episode where he moves back in with his parents, on incredibly thin ice and later takes the blame for his little brother smoking weed, essentially sacrificing what is left of his family life so his brother can go and fulfill his potential, is one of my favorite scenes of recent times.

Hard to see how they can go past a fourth season but who knows with this show what direction it is going to take. Just finished season 3 and it was incredible.
